I woke to the feeling of being watched.
Moonlight spilled across the room, illuminating Kael standing near the bed.
"You should not be here," I said softly.
"This is my chamber," he replied.
I sat up, clutching the sheets. "Do you plan to kill me tonight?"
If I expected anger, I was wrong.
He looked… tired.
"If I could," he said quietly, "you would already be dead."
The honesty startled me.
He turned away. "The curse reacts to you. It calms. It listens."
I swallowed. "Then maybe it recognizes me."
He looked back, eyes glowing faintly gold.
"Or maybe," he said, "you are its new master."
A shiver ran down my spine.
