The Lord didn't cross the gap. She didn't need to.
She lifted both hands, the wounded one and the whole one, and black threads poured out of all ten fingertips at once. These were not the fine, curling threads she had used on Mirko and Shiro. They came out thick and straight and hard, and as they crossed the air they stiffened into long black wires, so that by the time they reached the shelf, they had become ten thin blades cutting in from ten directions.
"Mirko!"

Mirko threw both arms up, and the sheet of jade light spread out from her forearms over all of them a moment before the wires struck. Most of them hit the barrier and screamed off it in showers of black sparks. Two of them didn't. They curved around its edge, low and fast, and one opened a long cut across Mirko's thigh while the other sliced a deep line through the stone of the shelf beside Ororo's foot.
Mirko didn't step back. She caught the next wire on her bracers and held it there.
