Darkness had engulfed the world. First, due to the whole Earth getting enveloped by an unknown virus which later was named the Evolution Virus.
Those who got affected by it either succumbed to it and became mindless monsters or survived it and awakened a power which helped them survive this almost doomed world.
It had been only one month since the Earth came to know about this virus, and it was estimated that less than one million people were left on the whole planet.
This was the last news Lukas had heard before the whole world's internet was cut off.
He was standing on the balcony of his home, which was no less than a villa. His father was a rich man owning lots of hotels and resorts, but now he was no more in this world.
His mother had died long before the virus even came to Earth, when he was just a kid. That's why his father got married again so he could grow up with a family instead of being lonely.
He really got a loving stepmother and two big sisters who doted on him a lot when he was a kid.
Sadly, his stepmother, who was with his father in Hawaii, had also succumbed to the virus.
It was said that the virus mostly infected people who weren't virgins, and till now it had proven right.
He didn't know if he should be happy about it or sad since he was a virgin.
The survival rate after getting infected was less than one percent, so he should be happy. "Tsk."
He looked at the last piece of flat bread in front of him and sighed. From today onward, they wouldn't have food to eat.
There was still electricity as they had solar panels, so they had full access to water, but no food.
Going out of their house to get food was a death note. The streets were filled with those mindless zombie monsters and those who were still in the infected state.
After the virus infected someone, they stayed in that state for five days before they became monsters or their immune system somehow magically won and they survived as an evolved person.
Society was totally lawless right now, so those infected people whom monsters saw as their own could walk on these streets freely, and they all were eager to commit any kind of crime they could.
Right now, Lukas was looking at the street. He could see three zombies walking around with no infected person in sight.
Their society was filled with rich people, so the population here was very low, which was far more favourable for him right now as there were very few monsters on the streets.
In fact, most of the older men were always on vacation, so the situation in his society was even better.
The reason he was looking at the streets was because just crossing this street, there was a convenience store. He didn't know if there was anything left in it or not, but he had to check it.
Currently his stomach was full and his strength hadn't waned, so today was the only best chance he had available. He had to risk his life no matter what.
He took a deep breath and instead of going through the stairs, which would have alerted his sisters who would then definitely try to stop him or tag along with him, he jumped through the window and landed on the garage roof.
Slowly he climbed down using a pipe and landed on the ground. Their courtyard was quite big — perks of being rich.
"If only we had a gun here." He shook his head. They did have guns, but they were kept in a farmhouse where they went for hunting.
Nonetheless, he had prepared for this day. He had already put an iron rod, which was a spare from the pipe they fixed last time, in the garage.
The door was already open, so he entered and looked at the Porsche. Too bad he couldn't drive. Last month he had turned 18, and before that his stepmother didn't let him touch the steering wheel.
His big sister Hannah was twenty years old, but she never felt interested in learning to drive either.
He picked up the rod, which was heavy but something he could work with.
He quietly made his way towards the gateway of his villa and stood there before looking towards the three zombies who were about 30 meters from his place.
Although the virus infected mostly those who were not virgins, if these zombies scratched you then you would become infected.
These three zombies were walking around the street like they were patrolling it. It was true in a sense. These guys might be mindless, but they did know where unaffected people lived, and on this street there were a total of four people who were unaffected.
Three of them were his family, and one person was his neighbour — she was none other than his class teacher. Her name was Elena Novak. It was a little surprising to see that she wasn't affected, as given her beauty and age it was hard to believe she was still a virgin. Nonetheless, miracles did exist, it seemed.
As for how she was able to afford living in this society, it was quite simple. The school it belonged to was owned by her family.
"I wonder if she has food or not." Just as he thought that, the window of her house opened and her teal eyes stared at him. And they were in a widened state.
Before she could create any sound, Lukas immediately gestured her to keep quiet. Sound would attract more zombies, and he didn't want that to happen today at all costs.
Elena immediately waved her hand to gesture what he was doing.
Lukas sighed and patted his stomach. She would definitely understand what he meant.
Elena immediately pointed towards her house as if saying that she had some, and she showed a stop sign as she went to take some of it.
Lukas wasn't surprised at her goodwill — as a person, she was very caring and lovely.
