Chapter 5 - Chapter 5: BURGER ?

♤ revised v.1♤

Arch stared at the inventory screen, his brow furrowed.

"A letter?" He muttered, his voice echoing in the empty house. "Hey, System. Hand it over. Let's see what kind of magical wisdom is hidden in this thing."

CREEAAAAKKKK.

[ ACCESS DENIED. ]

"Denied? Seriously?" Arch rolled his eyes, his hunger quickly eclipsing his curiosity. "Fine, keep your secrets. What a cliffhanger. Just give me my hamburger and stop playing games."

He sent the command through his mind, expecting the burger to simply materialize in his hand. Instead, the small, book-sized interface of the system began to vibrate. It didn't just grow; it expanded with a violent, stretching motion until it stood three meters tall—a massive, monolithic black oak door standing in the center of the rotting room.

Arch's jaw dropped. "What the hell? A door? An old, abandoned black door?" He took a cautious step back, his heart hammering against his ribs. "Is this... Slender Man? Please tell me I didn't just summon a creepypasta."

The silence that followed was suffocating. Then, the sound returned.

CREEAAAAKKKK.

The door quivered. A wave of bone-chilling cold rolled out from the cracks, smelling of ancient dust and stagnant death. Every instinct in Arch's body screamed at him to run, to hide, to vanish. A primal warning flared in his mind: Move, and you die.

THUUUUUUD.

The door swung fully open. There was no monster standing there—only a void so dark it seemed to swallow the light of the room. It was the Abyss itself.Arch stared into the darkness, paralyzed, until a gravelly, echoing voice whispered from the depths:

"If you gaze long into an abyss, the abyss will gaze back into you."

In the center of that infinite blackness, a single, colossal eye snapped open. It was bloodshot, with a red iris and veins that pulsed like writhing worms. It didn't just look at Arch; it looked through him, weighing his very soul.

Arch couldn't even scream. He just waited for the end.

Then, the eye shut.

From the darkness, a finger emerged. It was gargantuan—the size of a pillar—with a long, jagged black nail and rotting, bloody flesh. It looked like the finger of a god that had been buried for a thousand years. Arch felt like an ant beneath its shadow.

But there, balanced perfectly on the very tip of that terrifying fingernail, was a crystal plate. And on that plate sat a spicy hamburger.

Arch's body moved on its own, guided by a strange, magnetic pull. He stepped forward, his hands trembling as he reached out and took the shimmering crystal plate.

As soon as he had the burger, the colossal finger retracted into the void like a retreating snail.

CREEAAAAKKKK... THUUUUD.

The door slammed shut, the sound rattling the windows of the old farmhouse. The black oak began to shrink and shake, folding in on itself until it was once again a simple, book-sized system window.

CREEAAAAKKKK.

[ INVENTORY: x1 LETTER ]

Arch stood frozen for a long minute, the smell of spicy beef and fresh buns clashing with the lingering scent of the grave.

"Haaa... haaa..." He let out a breathless, hysterical laugh. "JUST FOR A BURGER? ARE YOU KIDDING ME? WHO PUTS THE ABYSS IN CHARGE OF DOOR DASH?"

He looked down at the burger. It was sitting on a plate of pure, flawless crystal, etched with patterns so intricate they probably cost more than a small kingdom. The burger sat upon it like a king on a throne.

"Can I... even eat this?" Arch wondered. He looked at the perfectly toasted bun and the melting cheese. "Whatever. I went through hell for this. It's only fair that I devour my share."

He didn't just eat; he attacked the burger like a starving animal.

"Oh my god," he mumbled through a mouthful of food. "Who made this? It's heavenly. Every bite is worth dying for." He looked back at the spot where the door had been. "Okay, Delivery Man... I forgive you. If the food tastes this good, I don't care about your world-ending entrance. Bring on the creepy door!"

CREEAAAAKKKK.

The high-pitched, Pica-like voice of the system suddenly blared:

[ DON'T FORGET TO RATE THE DELIVERY SERVICE! ]

Arch started coughing, a piece of lettuce nearly lodging itself in his throat. "Cough! Cough! Give me a break!"
