Chapter 24 - Pack Of Dormant Beasts

Leo sat on the branch of a tree with his bag over his back and his gaze set on the pack of dormant beasts before him. They were one of the beast species that were very common around the region of Hellscape where Glory base was located.

They were one of the weakest beasts known to have weak dormant cores that barely did anything to a normal superhumans cultivation.

Their form was that of a huge oversized rodent over two feet tall and several feet long. They looked very much like any normal rodent would look except for a few minor differences. These rodent like beasts were called "death critters" for the main reason that they fed on mostly corpses.

They moved in groups of at least twenty and we're fast and resilient, they only attacked other hunters when attacked themselves and were known to be extremely violent. Even among their own kind they would tear each other apart when enraged.

"Sixteen."

Leo finished counting the number of death critters in the small field before him, he suspected that there could have been more but could he really do anything about that?

It had only taken him two days to find any beast in the area, following the map had led him into terrain that had been barely explored. This was largely due to the fact that the area was believed to be a rodent infestation and nothing more.

Only a party of foolhardy hunters would choose to come here when there were bigger kills to be made.

Leo was neither foolhardy nor was he foolish to think he was some powerhouse like Cassandra Hearth. Despite being a newly awakened legacy bearer he did not let it get to his head and make him thing he had been some special superhuman. After all he had killed a legacy bearer, though indirectly. He had learned a very crucial information from that encounter aside from the fact that there was a monster living inside of him.

The thing he had learned was to never underestimate his opponent in a battle and to always be prepared for the unexpected.

So he spent a full day observing the pack of death critters, monitoring their habits. How they moved and coordinated, the borrows where they slept and when they got up the next day.

This was already the sixth day in his long expedition and he had made sure to come up with a tactic to defeat the pack of quiescent ranked beasts. Facing them was not optional it was mandatory.

He took out the map for what had to be the tenth time that day and looked at it with tenacity, according to it he had to cut through that exact field to get to a number of caves where the red circle was drawn.

'Am I really gonna risk my life over a wild goose chase?'

He had spend most of his free time training and getting more used to his new weapon, and now he wanted more than anything to get this over and done with.

He was almost put of supplies so he would head out sooner than later.

He had two options on how to move, he could leave in the day when the sun was out and when the quiescent beasts were still active or in the night where the world would be asleep.

If it was the him before awakening he would have picked the daytime, after all who was stupid enough to fight a horde of beasts alone in the night?

But after awakening and becoming a legacy bearer he had soon discovered his strange ability to be able to see clearly in the dark. He was also much more active in the night and that was when his senses were more heightened.

These past days he had learned how to control his senses and limit them slightly, he had to admit that he was a long way from making actual progress but who was he to argue?

Finishing his morning watch of the beasts he decided to go back to his hiding spot several meters away to train, using the red needle had been a real treat. The almost weightless rapier forced him to move quicker and smarter, it was a weapon that punished even the slightest of mistakes dearly.

And he loved it for that exact reason, one thing he would hate to do more than anything was to make mistakes that would go unpunished.

Hellscape punished mistakes, it was something he had learned the hard way.

There was another reason why he had chosen to cut through the death critters ingested field at night. He had noticed for the past few days that there had been another person observing the beasts alongside him.

It was a chubby old man who wore strange adventures wear like he was from a children's cartoon. The man would come everyday and collect information on a book before ending up having to fight to defend himself from them, in the end the man would run away scared.

It was amusing to watch but he came back everyday afterwards.

As he was on his way back to his hiding hole for his early morning practice, he heard a familiar chime in the head and looked up at the list of information being displayed before him.

After five days he had grown a bit accustomed to having the regular chile like a morning alarm.

[You have received 1 lunar point for completing a daily objective: Resist the urge to consume flesh.]

[You have received 1 lunar point for completing a daily objective: Resist "Xavax".]

[Lunar Points can be allocated to stat slots.]

With that he had already achieved a total of ten lunar Points already. He still did not know how to properly use them yet and was too busy to care.

Another chime came in and the daily objectives seemed to renew themselves as they always did.

[Daily Objectives]

1. Resist the urge to consume flesh.

Reward: 1 Lunar Point.

2. Resist "Xavax".

Reward: 1 Lunar Point.

3. Awaken an exclusive skill.

Reward: 1 lucky roulette coupon.

He glanced at them like he did every other day but this time he put a little bit of thought into what each daily objective actually meant.

With each day that passed Leo had continued to grow the strange urge to consume flesh, he could still feel it from time to time. He wondered how long it would stay silent however.
