Zuran was quiet all through their search for a place to stay. He simply held the sleeping Yira in his arms while looking down.
He struggled not to look around—struggled not to see the terrible state of things around him. But it was almost impossible. He stared from time to time, watching how disastrous everything looked.
Beast cubs picking up scraps from trash cans, mothers holding onto their sick, dying children and husbands. It was heartbreaking.
As they moved, they saw some people who didn't seem like they were from here—soldiers who marched as though the land belonged to them.
Ren ignored them. He didn't want to get too curious.
Then they came across some of these soldiers beating up cubs for stealing food. Ren wanted to ignore it, but he couldn't.
He walked up to them and smiled. "What's all this drama about?"
The soldiers stared at him from head to toe. They ignored him and continued beating the cubs.
