Chapter 31 - Ascension In This Modern Time

Chapter 34: Threads of Recognition

The boy wasn't supposed to notice him. Adrian had kept his distance, watching from across the street, pendant pulsing faintly against his chest. He told himself he was just observing, just waiting for the right moment. But the relic had other plans.

On the fifth evening, as Adrian lingered near the corner, the boy looked up from his sketchbook and locked eyes with him. It wasn't a casual glance. It lingered, sharp and questioning, as if he could feel the weight pressing from Adrian's chest.

Adrian froze, heart pounding. The pendant flared suddenly, brighter than before, burning against his skin. The boy frowned, tilting his head, then closed his notebook slowly.

Leah whispered beside him, "He sees you. He knows something's different."

Adrian swallowed hard. "Then the relic was right. He's one of them."

The boy crossed the street, his steps cautious but steady. Adrian's chest tightened, pendant glowing faintly. He wanted to run, to hide, to wait for Elias's approval. But the relic pulsed harder, demanding.

"Why are you watching me?" the boy asked, voice quiet but firm.

Adrian hesitated, searching for words. "I… don't know how to explain. But you're connected. To something bigger."

The boy's eyes narrowed. "Connected? To what?"

Adrian clenched his fists, pendant glowing faintly against his chest. He wanted to tell him everything — the relic, the hunters, the cavern beneath the city. But Elias's warning echoed in his mind: Trust is risk.

Leah stepped forward, her voice steady. "Have you ever felt… different? Like the city itself was watching you?"

The boy blinked, startled. "Sometimes. When I draw. Symbols appear. I don't know why. I thought I was imagining it."

Adrian's breath caught. "You're not imagining it. Those symbols… they're real. They're part of something hidden. And the relic reacts to you."

The boy glanced at Adrian's chest, where the pendant glowed faintly beneath his shirt. His eyes widened. "That light… I've seen it before. In my dreams."

Adrian's stomach dropped. "Dreams?"

The boy nodded slowly. "Emerald light flooding the streets. Hunters in the shadows. People carrying fragments. I thought I was going crazy."

Leah's gaze hardened. "You're not crazy. You're one of them. The relic chose you too."

Silence hung heavy. The boy looked down at his sketchbook, fingers trembling. "Then what does it want from me?"

Adrian swallowed hard, pendant pulsing brighter. "I don't know yet. But I think… it wants us to stand together."

The boy's eyes met his again, recognition flickering. For the first time, Adrian felt the fragile beginnings of trust.

That night, Adrian told Elias.

Elias scowled immediately. "Reckless. You approached him without knowing who he is. Hunters could have been watching."

Adrian clenched his fists. "But he's connected. He's already seeing the visions. He's already carrying fragments. If we don't reach him, hunters will."

Elias sighed, rubbing his temples. "Then move carefully. If he's truly chosen, he'll need guidance. But guidance means risk. And risk means more eyes on us."

Adrian nodded, determination burning in his chest. He thought of the boy's sketches, of the visions they shared, of the pendant's frantic pulse.

He whispered to himself, voice hoarse. "I'll rise. I'll uncover the truth. And I'll find them. One by one."

The pendant pulsed again, brighter than before.

And Adrian Reyes knew the path ahead wasn't just about cultivation or history. It was about signals — fragile threads of recognition, weaving strangers into allies before the hunters tore them apart.
