Chapter 34 - Ascension In This Modern Time CHAPTER 34

Chapter 34: Breakthrough and Blood

The warehouse was silent, the air heavy with expectation. Adrian sat cross-legged, pendant warm against his chest, guiding Qi through his veins. He had been building toward this moment for weeks — slow, steady, disciplined. Elias's voice echoed in his mind: Roots first. Foundation before power.

Tonight, the cracks in his meridians widened.

Adrian's breaths came deep and steady, sweat dripping down his face. The pendant pulsed brighter, flooding his chest with warmth. He felt the pressure building, the promise of breakthrough pressing against his body like a storm waiting to burst.

Leah stood nearby, golden aura flickering faintly, her eyes sharp. Elias watched from the shadows, arms crossed, silent but alert.

Adrian clenched his fists, whispering to himself. "Control. Discipline. Survival."

Then it happened.

The pressure shattered. Qi surged through his veins, flooding his body with emerald light. Adrian gasped, chest heaving, as the next meridian opened. The pendant flared, brighter than ever, flooding the warehouse with light.

Leah shielded her eyes, stunned. "He did it."

Elias nodded slowly, his expression unreadable. "A breakthrough. Stronger than I expected."

Adrian trembled, chest burning, but he steadied himself. The glow settled, no longer frantic, no longer wild. He had done it. He had risen.

But the pendant didn't calm. It pulsed harder, frantic, urgent.

Elias's eyes narrowed. "Hunters."

The warehouse doors burst open. Two figures stepped inside, cloaked in darkness, eyes glowing faintly. Their presence was heavy, their aura sharp. Adrian's stomach dropped. The breakthrough had drawn them.

Leah moved first, golden aura blazing. She struck hard, forcing one hunter back. Adrian rose, Qi flooding his veins, pendant pulsing. He met the second head-on, fists glowing emerald. Elias stepped forward, calm and precise, his strikes carrying the weight of discipline.

The warehouse erupted into chaos. Blows clashed, Qi hummed, the air thick with energy. Adrian staggered, ribs aching, but his newfound strength steadied him. His strikes were sharper, his control tighter. The breakthrough had given him more than power — it had given him balance.

Leah fought beside him, fierce and steady. Elias held the line, his presence unyielding. Together, they clashed against the hunters, the warehouse shaking with every strike.

But the hunters were strong. Too strong.

One slammed Adrian into the wall, pain exploding across his side. He coughed, blood filling his mouth, vision swimming. The pendant flared, guiding him, but his body screamed. He forced the Qi through his veins, steadying himself, channeling it into his fists.

He struck back, harder this time. The hunter stumbled, eyes wide. Adrian gasped, chest heaving, but he didn't fall.

Leah's golden aura blazed brighter, her strikes fueled by determination. Elias's discipline held steady, each movement precise.

Together, they struck. Emerald, gold, and steel. The clash shook the warehouse, the hunters staggering under the combined assault.

One snarled, retreating into the shadows. The other hissed, aura flickering. "You've grown," it said, voice sharp. "But growth draws eyes. And more will come."

Then they vanished, leaving silence heavy in the warehouse.

Adrian collapsed onto the floor, chest heaving, body trembling. Leah sat beside him, sweat dripping down her face. Elias stood nearby, arms crossed, eyes sharp.

"You broke through," Elias said quietly. "But breakthroughs are signals. Every step forward will draw more hunters. You need to be ready."

Adrian wiped blood from his mouth, pendant glowing faintly against his chest. He clenched his fists, whispering to himself. "I'll rise. I'll uncover the truth. And I'll survive."

The pendant pulsed, steady and calm.

But Adrian felt the weight pressing heavier than ever. The breakthrough had given him strength, yes, but it had also painted a target on his back. He realized now that cultivation wasn't just about progress. Every step forward was a beacon, a flare in the dark, calling enemies closer.

Leah touched his shoulder, her voice softer. "We survived. That means we can survive again. But you can't carry this alone."

Adrian met her gaze, pendant glowing faintly between them. For the first time, he understood — breakthroughs weren't victories. They were invitations. And survival meant more than strength. It meant unity.
