Chapter 2 - THE PARTY

When David got home, he helped his mum arrange the rest of their luggage, then cleaned the house before going to his room to rest for the party. It was already 7:55 p.m., so David told his mum not to wait up for him. His mum asked why, and David replied that he was going to a party organized by their football captain because he had made the school's First Eleven team.

His mum then asked, "Will there be girls?"

"Probably," David replied.

Hearing this, his mum said, "I want you back home by 11:00 p.m."

David laughed, hugged his mum, thanked her, kissed her on the cheek, and left.

When David got to the school, he saw Alex standing beside his jeep. Seeing David, Alex asked, "What took you so long?"

"I had to tell my mum," David replied.

"Oh, and she was cool with it?" Alex asked.

"Yeah," David said.

"Cool. Get in the jeep," Alex said.

They got into the jeep, and Alex drove off.

When they arrived at Jack's house, Alex immediately began celebrating and trying to start conversations with the girls. David, however, stood quietly in a corner until he noticed Sarah in the kitchen. He walked over to her and asked if he could help.

Sarah was surprised to see David. "Wow," she said.

Surprised, David asked, "What?"

"Nothing," Sarah replied.

"Come on, tell me," David said curiously.

"Well, I didn't think you'd come—especially after the incident with Jack," Sarah admitted.

"Oh, that's water under the bridge," David said.

"Oh, really?" Sarah asked, surprised.

"Yeah. So, do you need any help?" David asked.

Smiling, Sarah said, "Actually, I do."

David began helping her, and they chatted for a while until Jack suddenly interrupted.

"What are you doing here?" Jack asked David.

"I just came to have fun. Remember, I made the First Eleven," David replied.

"Well, do it away from my girl, so back off," Jack snapped.

Jack then kissed Sarah and led her upstairs to his room. David followed quietly and rested his ear against the door, hearing them making out. Feeling hurt, he went back downstairs, grabbed a bottle of beer, and went to sit inside Alex's jeep, slowly drinking.

A few moments later, Alex came out and asked, "Why are you sitting here? The party's inside."

"I don't feel like partying," David replied.

"Why?" Alex asked, confused.

"Nothing," David said.

Alex looked at him and said, "Let me guess—this has something to do with Sarah."

"I don't want to talk about it," David replied.

"Good," Alex said. "Because you can't let yourself be down over a girl who's inside enjoying herself. Come on, man—have fun like it's your last day on earth. Feel alive."

Hearing this, David nodded. "You're right."

"Of course I am," Alex said. "Also, I don't think you've ever had beer before."

David laughed. "Nope."

"Good," Alex said. "Because it's terrible."

They both laughed.

"Come on," Alex added. "I think there are cold beverages in the freezer."

David threw away the beer bottle and followed Alex back into Jack's house.

A few minutes later, Sarah and Jack came downstairs. David avoided looking at Sarah, though she tried to speak to him but never got the chance.

Eventually, the party ended. Sarah was about to get into her car when Jack pulled her back and kissed her in front of David and Alex.

"Drive safe," Jack said.

"I will," Sarah replied before driving away.

Jack then turned to David and said, "You'll never have a girl like that."

He walked back into his house.

David felt anger rising inside him, but noticing the change in his expression, Alex said, "Relax, David. He's just trying to mess with your head."

David took a deep breath. "You're right. It's not worth it."

"Exactly," Alex said. "Let's go before he comes back with more nonsense."

They got into Alex's jeep and drove off into the night.
