Chapter 5 - THE MEETING PART 1

David woke up, took a bath, and stood in front of the bathroom mirror drying himself. As he looked at his reflection, he noticed his eye color slowly turning yellow. Startled, he stared at himself and blinked several times. His eyes returned to their normal color.

Shaken, David finished getting ready and left for school.

When he arrived, he went straight to Alex and told him that he was going to become a werewolf. Alex immediately made a funny face, laughed, and said, "You watch too much television. Just because a wolf bit you doesn't mean you'll turn into a werewolf."

David then told Alex everything his mum had told him.

"You're taking this joke seriously," Alex said.

"I'm not joking," David replied. "I wish I was, but I'm not."

Alex studied David's face and frowned. "Wait… you're serious?"

"Yes." David replied

"Then I'll need proof," Alex said.

"You'll get it in two days," David replied.

"Why two days?" Alex asked

"Because there'll be a full moon." David replied

Just then, David noticed Sarah arriving at school.

"Or maybe you won't have to wait two days for proof," David added.

Alex looked confused. "What do you mean?"

"Whose car led us into the woods in the first place?" David asked.

Alex thought for a moment. "Sarah's… which means she was there."

"And the only things we saw were three wolves and a coyote," David added.

Alex's eyes widened. "Which means she's either a werewolf or a werecoyote."

"Exactly," David said.

"If this is a joke," Alex muttered, "you're taking it way too seriously."

"Trust me, it's not a joke," David said. "I don't even have all the answers."

"Then let's get some," Alex replied.

They decided to follow Sarah and question her during lunch.

At lunchtime, David and Alex spotted Sarah heading toward the girls' restroom and followed her.

Sarah sensed she was being followed. As soon as she entered the restroom, she hid behind the door. When David and Alex stepped inside, she slammed the door shut behind them.

Before they could react, she punched Alex in the face, knocking him to the floor. David tried to grab her, but she grabbed his arm, flipped him over, slammed him onto the floor, and pressed his face down with her hand.

"Why are you following me?" she demanded.

"We just want to talk," David said.

"Yeah, great job with that," she replied sarcastically.

Alex groaned and asked, "Are you a werewolf or a werecoyote?"

Sarah froze. "What are you talking about?"

"Why was your car outside the woods?" David asked.

"I went swimming in the lake," she replied.

"So that's why your clothes were on the ground?" David asked.

"Yes. I like swimming there—it's colder." Sarah said

Alex laughed despite the pain. "So you decided to hike naked through the woods just to swim?"

"Yes," Sarah snapped.

Alex spat blood from his bruised mouth. "Why not undress when you get to the lake? And why were your clothes torn?"

"That's none of your business," Sarah said.

"It is now," David replied.

Alex insisted, "You still haven't answered—are you a werewolf or a werecoyote?"

"You're out of your minds," Sarah said. "There's no such thing. I'm going to the principal."

"No, you won't," David said.

His eyes suddenly glowed yellow.

Alex gasped. "Uh… David? Your eyes are glowing."

David shoved Sarah away. She landed on her feet and immediately attacked him, flipping and slamming him onto the floor. The two fought fiercely—punches, kicks, throws—crashing into toilet doors and walls.

During the struggle, David grabbed Sarah by the neck and slammed her against the wall.

"What are you?" he demanded. "Are you like me?"

"I'm a werecoyote," she blurted out.

Her eyes glowed yellow. She elbowed David away and pushed him back. Her eyes returned to normal.

She noticed the bandage on his hand. "Where did you get that injury?"

Before David could answer, Alex snapped, "Trying to save you last night!"

"And I saved him too," Sarah shot back. "When the alpha almost killed him."

David stepped in. "It's not entirely Sarah's fault. I would've turned eventually."

"Your parents were werewolves?" Sarah asked.

"My dad was," David replied. "He was killed by werecoyotes."

Sarah stiffened. "Werewolves killed my mother."

David frowned. "So that makes it okay?"

"No," she said quietly.

Alex sighed. "So how does this whole werewolf thing work?"

"How should I know?" David snapped. "I found out yesterday."

Sarah explained. "After a bite, you gain strength, speed, senses, and healing. That's why I was surprised your hand was bandaged."

David removed the bandage—his wound was completely healed.

"Cool," Alex said. "What else?"

"On the next full moon, David will transform," Sarah said. "And eventually, he'll be forced to join the alpha's pack."

"So he has to join those beasts?" Alex asked.

"Not necessarily," Sarah replied. "David was born a werewolf. He would've transformed at eighteen anyway."

David asked, "Why do werewolves and werecoyotes hate each other?"

Sarah hesitated. "They always have. Werewolves crave power. Werecoyotes fight to survive. They're stronger—but we're faster and smarter."

"Sounds like werewolves are the villains," Alex said.

"Because they are," Sarah replied.

"Not all of them," David said. "My dad wasn't."

Sarah sighed. "We'll see in two days. First transformations are dangerous. You'll need to be chained."

"I have a basement," David said.

"I have chains," Alex added.

"I hope it works," Sarah said.

Jack's footsteps echoed outside.

"He's coming," Sarah whispered. "Hide. Jack knocked on the restroom door.

"Sarah, open up. We need to talk. I'm sorry."

"There's nothing to talk about," Sarah replied firmly.

Jack noticed multiple shadows beneath the door. His voice hardened.

"Sarah… who's in there with you?"

"No one," she answered quickly.

Jack clenched his fists. "Don't lie to me."

Before Sarah could respond, Jack forced the door open. His eyes landed on David, and his expression darkened with rage.

"What the hell are you doing with her?" Jack shouted.

David raised his hands. "Hey, Jack, it's not what you—"

Jack didn't let him finish. He punched David hard and grabbed him, slamming him onto the restroom floor. He continued punching him repeatedly. Students intervened. The principal sent all four to detention.

After practice, Sarah ran into the locker room.

"They're outside," she said. "The werewolves. They're waiting for you."

David swallowed. "What do they want?"

"To take you," she said.

"We run," Alex said.

"They have motorbikes," Sarah replied.

Alex grinned. "Then we move fast—and you protect us."

"I want to talk to them," David said.

Alex nodded. "I'll call the cops. Kidnapping report. Backup plan just incase we are caught it will look like we've been kidnapped, and just for safety I'll turn on my GPS to ensure we are found"

They agreed.

Alex made the call and they went out.
