Suo Ran sat heavily at the edge of the table. The black card pulsed faintly beside him. Each vibration was a heartbeat he could feel in his chest.
Cai Lang leaned against the wall again, arms crossed, eyes narrowing. "You know they won't stop," he said quietly. "Not until they have some leverage."
Suo Ran's fingers drummed against the table. "And Jun Wei… he's just a kid. A living, breathing… target."
"Yes," Cai Lang said softly. "And that's why we can't be careless. Every step we take has to account for them."
Suo Ran stared at the card, then back at Cai Lang. "Do you ever wonder if they already know… about the places we hide, the backups, the alternate safehouses?"
Cai Lang shrugged slightly, though his jaw tightened. "They probably do. That's why we've been cautious. But that doesn't mean we're powerless."
Suo Ran's eyes darkened. "Powerless feels… wrong. I should be there. With him. Not somewhere else."
Cai Lang softened his tone. "You can't. Not right now. The boy's safer with Lian and Teacher Liu. You can't shield him from the world… but you can shield him from this moment."
Suo Ran exhaled sharply. "Shield him from this moment…" He shook his head. "Feels like I'm failing."
"You're not failing," Cai Lang said firmly. "You're alive, and you're thinking. Most people don't get that far."
Suo Ran looked up, expression almost bitter. "Thinking doesn't stop them from coming."
Cai Lang's gaze softened. "No. But it keeps us one step ahead. You've already done more for Jun Wei than most would ever manage."
A long silence followed. Outside, the city murmured as usual oblivious to the danger threading through its streets.
Finally, Suo Ran whispered, "I hate that he's smiling… even when they're out there, hunting."
Cai Lang tilted his head. "That's exactly why they haven't taken him yet. Kids give hope… hope makes people reckless. And reckless is dangerous. For them, not him."
Suo Ran's hand clenched around the card. "I keep imagining the worst."
Cai Lang stepped closer. "Then imagine me with you. We're not letting that happen. Not while we can move."
Suo Ran's lips pressed together, but he didn't argue. He only nodded, slowly.
Teacher Liu's House – Later That Day
Jun Wei's small footsteps echoed softly across the apartment. Lian Ziho followed closely, careful not to let the boy run ahead. Teacher Liu's place was quiet, almost sterile, yet safe.
Jun Wei tilted his head. "Gege… why aren't we staying at the new rent house?"
Lian ziho glanced at him. "We couldn't get it in time. Too many people looking. Too risky."
Jun Wei frowned. "So… we stay here?"
Teacher Liu entered from the kitchen, drying his hands on a towel. "Yes. For now, it's safe." He gave a small smile. "It will feel temporary, but temporary can be enough."
Jun Wei hugged his hand instinctively. "Then… mission safe?"
"Safe," Lian Ziho said softly. "For now."
Jun Wei's eyes widened. "For now… but not forever?"
"Exactly," Lian ziho said carefully, crouching to meet him at eye level. "Which is why we have to be smart. Quiet. Careful. Like heroes on a secret mission."
Jun Wei puffed up his chest. "Secret mission! Got it!"
Teacher Liu chuckled softly. "That's the spirit."
The boy ran to the window, peering out briefly. "I want to see Gege."
Lian ziho's gaze softened. "He'll come. Soon."
Jun Wei's small hand reached for Lian ziho's. "Promise?"
"Promise," Lian ziho said.
Back at the Safehouse___
Suo Ran paced slowly. The card pulsed again, faint but insistent. Cai Lang watched him silently.
"You think they'll follow Jun Wei here?" Suo Ran asked.
Cai Lang shrugged. "Possibly. But they're professionals. They'll test the waters first, make sure there's a pattern. That's why Lian's with him. That's why he's not alone."
Suo Ran stopped pacing. "I keep seeing… what could happen. What if "
Cai Lang held up a hand. "Stop. Thinking about 'what if' doesn't help. Only the next step matters. Right now, Jun Wei is safe, and that's all you control."
Suo Ran clenched his fists. "Control… control is all I ever wanted."
Cai Lang's voice dropped, softer this time. "Control is an illusion. You've got protection, preparation, and people who care. That's enough for now."
Suo Ran ran a hand over his face. "It never feels like enough."
"Because it isn't," Cai Lang admitted quietly. "But it's what we've got. And we're not letting them take him."
Suo Ran looked up, expression grim. "Then we move next. Carefully. Every step."
Cai Lang nodded. "Exactly. And when the time comes… we don't hesitate."
The black card pulsed again. Stronger.
Suo Ran felt it like a warning.
"They're closer," he murmured.
"Closer than we thought," Cai Lang agreed.
And for a long moment, both men stared at the table, at the card, at the quiet that wasn't quiet at all. Outside, the city thrummed. Somewhere, unseen, the shadows moved closer.
Suo Ran stared at the black card as it pulsed faster now, almost like it had a heartbeat of its own.
Cai Lang's eyes were fixed on him. "Every time it reacts, it's a warning. They're testing us… probing."
Suo Ran swallowed hard. "Then we're running out of time."
Cai Lang leaned closer. "Time isn't what you think. It's what they give you and we have to make every second count."
Suo Ran's hand tightened on the edge of the table. "Jun Wei… Lian ziho… if anything "
"You don't finish that thought," Cai Lang said firmly. "Because nothing has happened yet. And if we act carefully, it won't."
A silence settled over the safehouse, heavy and suffocating. Outside, the city carried on, oblivious, but every nerve in Suo Ran's body screamed that danger had already crossed the street.
He looked at Cai Lang, eyes sharp. "And if they come here next?"
Cai Lang's expression was calm, but there was a glint of steel in his gaze. "Then we meet them. And they won't see us coming."
Suo Ran let out a long, shaky breath, a mix of fear and resolve. "One step… we survive one step at a time."
The black card pulsed again faster, sharper like a countdown.
Suo Ran's lips tightened. "They're closer than we thought."
Cai Lang nodded. "Closer than anyone knows."
And somewhere across the city, far from the safehouse, shadows were already moving into position.
A faint echo of footsteps. A reflection in a window. A presence that wasn't supposed to be seen yet was.
The game had begun.
And no one was truly safe.
The black card pulsed again, stronger.
Suo Ran's eyes narrowed.
"We wait," he said softly.
Cai Lang's hand hovered over his own weapon. "No," he replied quietly. "We act."
The safehouse grew silent, but outside, the world was already alive with intent, with threat, with the knowledge that the hunter and the hunted were about to collide.
And somewhere, unseen, the first piece of the trap had already been set.
The rented room felt small. Too small for the weight of everything they carried.
Jun Wei sat cross-legged on the floor, holding the fox keychain tightly. His colored pencils lay scattered around him like tiny soldiers awaiting orders. Lian Ziho leaned against the wall, eyes never still, scanning the quiet street outside the window.
"Lian Gege…" Jun Wei's voice was small. "Is teacher coming back soon?"
Lian ziho's expression softened. "Not today, little one. Teacher Liu had to return to the dorm. He'll be back in the morning, but I promised him I'd take care of you until then."
Jun Wei's small face scrunched. "But… I want to see to him. I want him now…"
Lian ziho crouched slightly, keeping his tone calm. "I know. And you will, soon. But right now, our mission is to stay safe. The city… it's not safe for little heroes like you just yet."
Jun Wei nodded slowly. His fingers fidgeted with the fox keychain. "Then… I'll wait. But I miss him."
"I know," Lian ziho said quietly, almost to himself. "I wish I could be there too."
The phone rang. Lian ziho glanced at the screen. Suo Ran. He hesitated, but picked it up.
"Jun Wei?" Suo Ran's voice was soft but strained. "…"
Jun Wei's tiny face crumpled. "Gege…" and suddenly the tears came. He sobbed quietly into the phone, clutching the fox tightly.
Lian Ziho immediately moved beside him, crouching down. "Hey… hey, it's okay. It's just a call. Gege's not gone forever." He gently held Jun Wei's other hand. "Breathe with me… one, two, three…"
Jun Wei sniffled, trying to follow, but more tears slipped down.
On the other line, Suo Ran's voice cracked slightly. "I… I can't be there right now. I'm so sorry… I wish I could hold you…"
"I know," Jun Wei whispered, voice trembling. "I… I just… I miss you, Gege…"
Lian ziho's heart tightened. He placed a comforting hand on the boy's shoulder. "I know, little one. Gege will be back. But for now, I'm right here. You're safe with me."
Suo Ran took a shaky breath. "Thank you… thank you for being there with him."
Lian ziho glanced at the street outside, instincts alert. "Always. I won't let anything happen to him."
Suo Ran nodded quietly, wiping his own tears. "I trust you."
Then Cai Lang's voice came from the other end, calm but firm. "Suo Ran, breathe. You're not alone. He's safe, and so is Lian ziho. You need to steady yourself."
Suo Ran exhaled slowly, letting the tension seep out. "Right… yes… okay."
Meanwhile, Jun Wei leaned against Lian, still sniffing. "Lian Gege… will you… take me to school tomorrow?"
Lian ziho nodded. "Yes. I'll take you myself. No strangers. No surprises. Only us."
Jun Wei's eyes sparkled. "Really? Mission… school?"
"Exactly," Lian ziho said softly, brushing a strand of hair from the boy's forehead. "Heroes always stay one step ahead, remember?"
Jun Wei hugged the fox keychain tightly. "I'll be brave, Lian Gege. I promise."
The room was quiet again. But Lian ziho's gaze kept drifting to the window, alert. Movement flickered across the street deliberate, careful, professional. Watching. Waiting.
"Nothing close… yet," Lian ziho murmured. "But someone's out there."
Jun Wei's voice piped up with innocent excitement. "Mission?"
"Yes," Lian ziho said softly. "Secret mission. Quiet mission. No noise."
The faintest shadow passed by the glass. Lian ziho 's hand tightened slightly. "Always stay ready, little one. Heroes never relax, even when it seems safe."
The phone clicked off. The soft silence that followed was heavy but not oppressive. Jun Wei sat on the couch, fiddling with the corner of his blanket, eyes wide and uncertain. Lian Ziho crouched beside him, gently patting his small shoulder.
"Hey… how about we try to get some sleep now?" Lian's voice was soft, almost coaxing.
Jun Wei blinked up at him. "Sleep? But… what if the villains come?"
Lian Ziho smiled faintly, brushing Jun Wei's hair from his forehead. "No villains tonight, little one. You're safe. I promise."
Jun Wei hesitated, then slowly nodded, allowing Lian ziho to guide him to the makeshift bed in the corner. Lian ziho pulled the blanket around the boy, tucking it in carefully.
"Tell me a story, Lian Gege," Jun Wei whispered, his eyes already heavy.
Lian Ziho chuckled quietly, settling beside him on the floor. "Okay… once upon a time, there was a little hero who could turn invisible whenever he wanted…"
Jun Wei's tiny hand clutched Lian ziho's sleeve. "Really? Can I turn invisible too?"
"Of course," Lian ziho said softly, smiling. "But only when you're very brave."
The story wove on heroes, missions, tiny victories, and laughter echoing softly in the quiet room. Jun Wei's eyelids drooped, and soon his breathing evened out. Lian ziho stayed there, watching him sleep, the small rise and fall of his chest a fragile reminder of everything at stake.
Hours passed in silence, broken only by the occasional hum from Jun Wei as he dreamt. Eventually, Lian Ziho leaned back, stretching, and allowed himself to close his eyes as well, just for a moment, one arm resting protectively around the boy.
Morning light filtered through the thin curtains, pale stripes stretching across the floor. Jun Wei stirred first, yawning and stretching his tiny arms.
"Good morning, Lian Gege," he said sleepily, crawling over to Lian ziho, who had just opened one eye.
"Good morning, little hero," Lian ziho murmured, smiling softly. "Did you sleep well?"
Jun Wei nodded enthusiastically, rubbing his eyes. "Yes! I had a dream! I won a mission!"
Lian ziho chuckled, helping him up. "Mission breakfast awaits, then. But first…" He led Jun Wei to the bathroom. "Time to brush those teeth, little warrior."
Jun Wei bounced on his toes, trying to reach the sink, and Lian Ziho lifted him easily. They brushed their teeth together, Jun Wei making the inevitable mess, toothpaste foam at the corners of his mouth. Lian wiped it gently, laughing softly.
"See? Brushing can be fun too," he said.
Jun Wei grinned. "I like it with you, Lian Gege."
After the bathroom, it was time to get dressed. Lian Ziho helped Jun Wei with his uniform, straightening collars and smoothing wrinkles. Jun Wei squirmed a little, trying to do it himself, but Lian's hands were gentle, patient, and protective.
"Ready for breakfast?" Lian ziho asked.
Jun Wei nodded eagerly. Lian Ziho moved to the small kitchen, quietly preparing a simple but warm breakfast eggs, toast, and a little fruit. Jun Wei hummed as he watched, occasionally peeking over the counter, eyes wide and curious.
"Can I stir the eggs, Lian Gege?" Jun Wei asked.
"Careful, little one," Lian ziho said, letting him stir under close supervision. "Heroes need steady hands."
They ate together, the morning sunlight warming the small apartment. Jun Wei chattered about school, friends, and missions in his imaginary world, while Lian listened, occasionally chuckling or answering. There was a fragile peace here, the kind that made small moments stirring eggs, tying shoes, sharing a smile feel monumental.
By mid-morning, Jun Wei was ready. Backpack secured, lunch packed, shoes tied. Lian Ziho crouched to his level.
"Okay… mission time," he said softly.
Jun Wei's eyes lit up. "Yes! We'll win!"
Hand in hand, they left the small apartment, walking toward the school. The streets seemed calm, almost normal, but both their instincts remained sharp. Every shadow, every passerby, every reflected window caught their attention.
"Keep close," Lian ziho whispered, tightening his grip on Jun Wei's small hand.
Jun Wei nodded, stepping carefully. "I'm brave, Lian Gege!"
And then, just as they approached the familiar gates of the school, Lian Ziho paused. Something in the air didn't feel right.
"Stop," he said, voice low and urgent.
Jun Wei stopped immediately, looking up at him. "Why?"
Lian ziho scanned the surroundings, eyes sharp. A faint movement in the distance two figures slipping silently among the trees, barely noticeable, yet unmistakable.
"Follow my lead," Lian ziho murmured.
Jun Wei tilted his head. "Are they… villains?"
Lian Ziho's jaw tightened. "Possibly. Or worse… scouts."
The figures paused, just far enough away to be unseen by anyone else, but their attention was focused on them.
Jun Wei swallowed, gripping Lian's hand tighter. "Lian Gege…"
"I know, little hero," Lian ziho said softly. "But you have to trust me."
The air thickened. The faint hum of the city seemed to vanish, leaving only the tension that prickled Lian Ziho's skin.
Jun Wei peeked up at him, eyes wide and unblinking. "What will happen?"
Lian Ziho didn't answer immediately. He only tightened his grip, heart racing as he assessed the distance and numbers, knowing one wrong move could change everything.
And in that moment, the streets around them held a dangerous quiet, as if the city itself were holding its breath.
The figures moved again. Closer.
Jun Wei tugged at Lian ziho's sleeve. "Lian Gege…?"
Lian ziho's voice was calm but firm. "Stay close… and stay quiet. We're not alone."
The shadows shifted, just enough to catch their eyes.
Jun Wei's small hand trembled in his, and Lian Ziho's chest tightened.
"Why are they here?" Jun Wei whispered.
"That's what we need to find out," Lian ziho said quietly.
And as they stepped forward, one question burned in the air, unanswered, heavy with possibility:
Who was really watching… and what would happen if they made the first move?
