Chapter 45 - When the Circle Began to Close

After the Door Closed.

The door closed softly behind them.

Not slammed.

Not rushed.

Just a quiet click.

But the sound echoed through the safehouse like something permanent had been sealed away.

For a long moment, no one moved.

Suo Ran still stood near the door, his hand hovering in the air where Jun Wei's small fingers had been moments before.

The room felt bigger now.

Emptier.

Too quiet.

Cai Lang leaned against the wall beside him, arms folded loosely, but his eyes were sharp.

"You're going to wear a hole in the floor if you keep staring at the door," he said quietly.

Suo Ran didn't answer.

He exhaled slowly and finally lowered his hand.

"He's going to cry again once they turn the corner," he murmured.

Cai Lang tilted his head slightly.

"You know that?"

"Yes."

"How?"

Suo Ran gave a faint smile that didn't reach his eyes.

"He always waits until he thinks no one can see him."

Silence settled again.

Across the room, the couch where Jun Wei had been sleeping still held the indentation of his small body.

Cai Lang noticed Suo Ran looking at it.

"You can sit down," he said.

"I'm fine."

"You're not."

Suo Ran turned slightly.

"Neither are you."

Cai Lang didn't deny it.

Suo Ran finally moved away from the door and walked to the table.

Jun Wei's puzzle pieces were still scattered there.

A small wooden fox keychain lay beside them.

The spare one.

Suo Ran picked it up slowly.

"He left this one behind."

Cai Lang walked over.

"He has the other one."

Suo Ran nodded.

"I know."

He turned the tiny fox in his fingers.

"Children think objects protect them."

Cai Lang leaned against the table.

"Sometimes they do."

Suo Ran looked up.

"You believe that?"

"I believe people believe in them," Cai Lang said calmly. "That's enough."

Suo Ran let out a small breath.

"You're surprisingly philosophical today."

Cai Lang shrugged.

"Don't get used to it."

The Silence Breaks

Minutes passed.

The city outside moved as if nothing had changed.

Cars passed.

Footsteps echoed on sidewalks.

Somewhere in the distance, a dog barked.

But inside the safehouse, the air remained heavy.

Finally Suo Ran spoke.

"How long before they realize he's gone?"

Cai Lang answered immediately.

"They already know."

Suo Ran froze.

"You're sure?"

Cai Lang nodded.

"The people chasing us don't lose track that easily."

Suo Ran's fingers tightened around the fox keychain.

"Then why didn't they stop them?"

"Because they're not hunting Jun Wei."

The words landed wrong.

Suo Ran slowly turned.

"What?"

Cai Lang met his eyes.

"They're hunting you."

Silence.

"You're guessing."

"No."

"Then explain."

Cai Lang pushed away from the table and walked toward the window.

"They've had opportunities to take the boy."

Suo Ran frowned.

"When?"

"Yesterday at the apartment."

Suo Ran's expression hardened.

"They didn't take him because we fought back."

"No," Cai Lang said quietly.

"They didn't take him because he's not the objective."

Suo Ran's voice dropped.

"Then why threaten him?"

Cai Lang looked back at him.

"Because he's leverage."

Suo Ran reached into his pocket slowly.

The thin black card slid into his palm.

It pulsed faintly.

Cai Lang noticed immediately.

"It's reacting again."

"Yes."

"When did it start?"

"Right after the knock."

Cai Lang frowned.

"That means they're closer than we thought."

Suo Ran turned the card over.

No markings.

No symbols.

Just a dark reflective surface.

"You still haven't told me what that thing actually is," Cai Lang said.

Suo Ran hesitated.

"It's not just a key."

Cai Lang raised an eyebrow.

"I figured that much."

Suo Ran sighed.

"It's part of the scroll system."

Cai Lang straightened slightly.

"Explain."

Suo Ran placed the card on the table.

"You remember the sealed scroll they were asking for."

"Yes."

"This card unlocks it."

Cai Lang's eyes narrowed.

"And you didn't think that was important information to share?"

"I wasn't sure."

"You're still not sure."

Suo Ran rubbed his temple.

"The scroll contains records."

"What kind of records?"

Suo Ran hesitated again.

Cai Lang noticed immediately.

"That bad?"

"Yes."

"How bad?"

Suo Ran finally answered.

"The kind people kill to erase "

Cai Lang sat down across from him.

"Start from the beginning."

Suo Ran nodded slowly.

"My father discovered something inside the archive network."

"What?"

"I don't know exactly."

Cai Lang's patience thinned.

"That's not helpful."

"I'm serious."

"Then what do you know?"

Suo Ran looked at the card again.

"He left the scroll sealed."

"And the card unlocks it."

"Yes."

"Why didn't he destroy it?"

Suo Ran's voice dropped.

"Because destroying it wouldn't erase the truth."

Cai Lang leaned back in his chair.

"And now you have both the key and the scroll."

"Yes."

"And a group of professionals breaking down doors to get them."

Suo Ran nodded once.

"That's the situation."

A Dangerous Question____

Cai Lang studied him quietly.

Then asked the one question Suo Ran had been avoiding.

"Have you opened it?"

Suo Ran didn't answer immediately.

Cai Lang's eyes sharpened.

"You have."

Suo Ran finally nodded.

"Yes."

"What did you see?"

Suo Ran's voice was almost a whisper.

"Names."

"What kind of names?"

"Powerful ones."

Cai Lang went very still.

"Government?"

"Yes."

"Corporate?"

"Yes."

"Military?"

Suo Ran nodded again.

"All of them."

Cai Lang leaned back slowly.

"That explains the termination order."

Suo Ran looked up sharply.

"You know about that?"

Cai Lang met his gaze.

"I checked the archive this morning."

Suo Ran's stomach dropped.

"And?"

Cai Lang answered quietly.

"You're officially listed as a containment risk."

Suo Ran let out a hollow laugh.

"That's polite language for execution."

"Yes."

Suo Ran leaned forward.

"So the scroll isn't just evidence."

"No."

"It's insurance."

"Yes."

"Which means…"

Cai Lang finished the thought.

"If anything happens to you, they'll make sure the scroll disappears too."

Suo Ran rubbed his face.

"That's comforting."

Cai Lang tilted his head slightly.

"You're calmer than I expected."

Suo Ran laughed softly.

"I already knew they wanted me dead."

Cai Lang studied him.

"You're not afraid?"

Suo Ran looked toward the door again.

"I'm afraid for Jun Wei."

Cai Lang didn't answer.

Because that was the real problem.

Meanwhile

Far across the city.

Teacher Liu walked slowly along a quiet street.

Jun Wei held his hand tightly.

Lian Ziho walked a few steps behind them.

Watching everything.

Jun Wei sniffled.

"I already miss Gege."

Teacher Liu squeezed his hand gently.

"You'll see him again soon."

Jun Wei looked up.

"Promise?"

Teacher Liu smiled softly.

"I promise."

Behind them, Lian Ziho scanned the street again.

Something felt wrong.

Too quiet.

He stepped closer.

"Teacher Liu."

"Yes?"

"Don't turn around."

The teacher's voice stayed calm.

"Why?"

"Because we're being followed."

Jun Wei looked between them.

"Is it part of the mission?"

Lian ziho forced a small smile.

"Yes."

Jun Wei brightened instantly.

"Then we'll win!"

Teacher Liu and Lian exchanged a glance.

Neither of them corrected him.

Because the truth would only scare him.

And right now..

Hope was the only weapon they had.

Hope was the only weapon they had.

For now.

Jun Wei swung their joined hands as they walked, trying to match Teacher Liu's longer steps. The street around them looked ordinary people passing by, a bicycle rolling down the road, the distant sound of a vendor calling out for customers.

But Lian Ziho's instincts refused to settle.

He slowed slightly.

Behind them, footsteps echoed again.

Measured.

Controlled.

Not random.

Teacher Liu spoke without turning his head. His voice remained calm, almost conversational.

"How many?"

Lian ziho answered quietly.

"Two. Maybe three."

Jun Wei perked up immediately.

"Three villains?" he whispered excitedly.

Teacher Liu smiled faintly at the boy.

"Maybe," he said softly. "But remember what heroes do when they see villains."

Jun Wei thought seriously for a moment.

"They don't panic."

"Exactly."

Behind them, one of the footsteps paused.

Then resumed.

Closer.

Lian ziho's gaze flicked to the glass reflection of a storefront window as they passed.

Two men.

Dark coats.

Neutral expressions.

Professional distance.

They weren't even pretending not to follow.

That alone made Lian ziho uneasy.

"They want us to know," he murmured.

Teacher Liu's expression didn't change.

"That's rarely a good sign."

Jun Wei looked between them.

"Should we run?"

Lian ziho shook his head slightly.

"Running means we're scared."

Jun Wei puffed up immediately.

"We're not scared."

Teacher Liu squeezed his hand gently.

"That's right."

But Lian ziho's eyes had already moved ahead.

At the intersection in front of them, another man leaned casually beside a parked car.

Watching.

Waiting.

Lian ziho's voice dropped lower.

"They're ahead too."

Teacher Liu's gaze sharpened slightly.

"So it's an escort."

"Or a trap."

Jun Wei tugged Teacher Liu's sleeve.

"Teacher?"

"Yes?"

"Why are the villains walking like office workers?"

Lian ziho almost laughed despite himself.

Teacher Liu crouched slightly so he was closer to the boy's height while still walking.

"Because the best villains don't want attention."

Jun Wei nodded wisely.

"That makes sense."

Back at the Safehouse

The silence inside the safehouse had become unbearable.

Suo Ran sat at the table, the black card resting in front of him.

It pulsed again.

Stronger.

Cai Lang watched it carefully.

"That's the third time."

"Yes."

"It's not random."

"No."

Suo Ran tapped the card lightly against the table.

"What if it's tracking something else?"

Cai Lang frowned.

"Such as?"

Suo Ran hesitated.

"The scroll."

Cai Lang leaned forward.

"You didn't bring it here."

"No."

"Then where is it?"

Suo Ran didn't answer immediately.

Cai Lang's eyes narrowed.

"You hid it."

"Yes."

"Where?"

"Somewhere safe."

"That's not an answer."

"It's the only one you're getting."

Cai Lang leaned back in his chair slowly.

"You really don't trust me."

Suo Ran looked up at him.

"That's not true."

"Then prove it."

Silence stretched between them.

Finally Suo Ran said quietly,

"If something happens to me… you'll find it."

Cai Lang studied his face.

"That's not reassuring."

"It's not supposed to be."

The card pulsed again.

Stronger this time.

Cai Lang frowned.

"That's new."

Suo Ran stared at it.

"What?"

"The frequency."

Cai Lang leaned closer.

"It's accelerating."

Suo Ran's stomach tightened.

"Meaning?"

Cai Lang's voice lowered.

"They're closer than we thought."

Across the City_____

Jun Wei had started humming softly to himself.

A cartoon theme song.

Teacher Liu listened quietly while keeping his gaze forward.

"Jun Wei," he said gently.

"Yes?"

"Remember the quiet mission Lian told you about?"

Jun Wei nodded enthusiastically.

"Yes!"

"We might need to play it now."

Jun Wei immediately straightened.

"No noise?"

"No noise."

The boy placed a finger over his lips.

"Secret mission."

Lian Ziho gave a small approving nod.

But his attention had shifted again.

The man ahead had pushed away from the car.

Walking toward them now.

Not fast.

Not threatening.

Just inevitable.

Behind them, the two followers closed the distance slightly.

Three directions.

Three angles.

Lian ziho exhaled slowly.

"Teacher Liu."

"Yes."

"We're about to have company."

Teacher Liu's tone stayed calm.

"Friendly?"

Lian ziho watched the man approaching.

"No."

Jun Wei whispered excitedly,

"Boss villain?"

Teacher Liu smiled faintly.

"Possibly."

The man stopped three steps in front of them.

Polite distance.

Well dressed.

Perfect posture.

His gaze flicked briefly to Jun Wei.

Then to Lian ziho.

Then to Teacher Liu.

"Good afternoon," he said smoothly.

Lian ziho didn't reply.

Teacher Liu did.

"Can we help you?"

The man smiled faintly.

"Actually… yes."

Jun Wei squeezed Teacher Liu's hand.

"Are you a villain?"

The man blinked.

Then chuckled softly.

"Not today."

Lian stepped slightly forward.

"State your business."

The man looked at him calmly.

"We're not here for you."

Lian ziho's eyes hardened.

"Then leave."

The man's gaze moved to Jun Wei again.

"That depends."

Jun Wei tilted his head.

"On what?"

The man's smile widened just slightly.

"On whether your brother cooperates."

Lian ziho felt a chill move down his spine.

Suo Ran.

They were already escalating.

Teacher Liu's voice lowered slightly.

"You should choose your next words carefully."

The man studied him with new interest.

"You're calmer than expected."

Teacher Liu smiled faintly.

"I work with children."

Jun Wei nodded proudly.

"He's a very good teacher."

The man's expression softened momentarily.

Then he looked back at Lian ziho.

"We're not here to harm the boy."

Lian didn't believe him.

"Then step aside."

The man shook his head slowly.

"I'm afraid we can't."

Jun Wei whispered,

"Are we losing the mission?"

Teacher Liu squeezed his hand.

"No."

Jun Wei looked relieved.

"Good."

The man sighed.

"You see, this situation would be much easier if Suo Ran cooperated."

Lian's voice turned cold.

"He's not here."

"I know."

The man's gaze sharpened.

"But you are."

And behind them...

The two men closed in.

Slowly.

Quietly.

Professional patience.

The circle tightening.

Lian Ziho shifted one step to the side.

Not sudden.

Not obvious.

But enough to place himself between Jun Wei and the nearest man.

Teacher Liu noticed immediately and drew Jun Wei slightly closer.

Jun Wei looked around with open curiosity.

"Teacher… are we surrounded?"

Teacher Liu answered softly.

"Something like that."

The man in front of them watched the movement calmly.

"You're careful," he said to Lian ziho.

Lian ziho didn't respond.

Behind them, one of the men stopped just two steps away.

Close enough now that escape would be difficult.

Jun Wei leaned closer to Teacher Liu and whispered loudly,

"Are we starting the escape level?"

Lian ziho almost sighed.

The leader's eyes flicked briefly toward the boy.

Then back to Lian ziho.

"You're making this harder than it needs to be."

Lian ziho finally spoke.

"You came prepared for that."

The man smiled faintly.

"Of course."

Jun Wei suddenly tugged Teacher Liu's sleeve.

"Teacher."

"Yes?"

Jun Wei pointed at one of the men behind them.

"I saw him before."

The street went still.

Lian ziho's head turned sharply.

Teacher Liu frowned.

"When?"

Jun Wei thought for a second.

"At the window."

Lian ziho's stomach dropped.

The man behind them didn't move.

But the leader's eyes narrowed slightly.

"Interesting," he murmured.

Jun Wei continued innocently.

"He was looking at our house yesterday."

Teacher Liu's grip on Jun Wei tightened just slightly.

Lian ziho's s voice dropped.

"You were watching the safehouse."

The leader didn't deny it.

Instead he looked at Jun Wei again.

Longer this time.

Carefully.

Like he was studying something unexpected.

Then his phone vibrated.

Once.

He checked the message.

And for the first time...

His expression changed.

Just a little.

Lian ziho noticed immediately.

"What happened?"

The man slowly lifted his eyes again.

But now...

He wasn't looking at Lian ziho.

He was looking at Jun Wei.

And he said quietly,

"…Well."

"That changes things."
