Chapter 9 - Meanwhile

- Leo -

A week ago, myself, the crew, and the passengers ended up in foreign lands, no not simply in another country, no it is more that we are outright in another world. One that seems to be mostly stuck in medieval Europe.

The nation we ended up in was Mondstadt. It greatly resembled Germany or at least that was what I told from one of the more experienced flight attendants, she had said that the architecture reminded of her home in a small village south of Berlin.

When we first arrived to the city we, the crew, and a teen went to the governing body's headquarters.

It took some time and initially it was only the crew and the knights leader plus his assistant Jean talking, then the knights leader, Varka, had asked the kids opinion on the current question. It was the question that we had gotten stuck on and were unable to decide.

Yet this kid, no teen, had laid out details that weren't mentioned prior and details already mentioned. He quickly analyzed and made a decision that was hard to argue against, it now made sense why he was there. The leader of the squad that brought us to Mondstadt, Kaeya, like sensed his potential.

Now that I think about it, it sounded like the same guy who spoke up from the top of the plane's wing, the one that climbed down last and had avoided immediate conflict between our two groups.

Unfortunately, he had been busy and we didn't even see him around Mondstadt most of the time, there had been a rare few times we saw him since that discussion and all the time he seemed to be in a hurry.

Sadly, myself and the crew had not the chance to thank him properly for the help, I do hope to encounter him at some point to convey our gratitude.

Anyways, once the crew and the passengers had settled in our chosen homes we had been mostly exploring the city. Some who had either experience cooking or were able to help with things like construction had integrated almost immediately with it taking them only about 2 days for them to have full jobs.

The rest, and most of the passengers had wanted to then prove themselves and show what they specialized in, some had become butchers, others accountants for businesses and some had even started making clothes.

Our experiences from our former world have become a great help in this one, it allowed us to show of some tips, tricks and improve the general life of the public.

Then again, this was only possible because the people of Mondstadt, the common people, were so welcoming. They had proactively invited us, trying to help us who were now stranded in an unknown place.

"Captain Leo" a brown haired steward named Brittney calls out for me, this steward was in fact my wife, who often enjoyed teasing me by calling me captain.

It just so happened that she was on the same returning flight from Cuba as I was and so we ended up here together, I honestly don't know what I would have done if I didn't have her by my side.

Today we are supposed to head to report our cumulative situation to Varka, a progress report of our condition.

I just happened to be the last one to leave the house, forcing the rest of the crew to wait, unfortunately we could not find the young man who was there with us last time.

It takes us about 40 minutes to arrive with our walking pace, some of us being mildly out of breath due to long time lack of constant exercise, but it was still far better then the initial 2.6h hour trek.

Once we arrive, we find Jean who then proceeds to lead us into Varka's office.

*pfft-*

We desperately hold in our laughter as we are faced with Varka in a 'lude pink maid's dress'. His eye twitching in annoyance the man sighs before saying "Blame the damn kid for my situation"

Quickly shaking my head to calm down I ask "Sorry but what do you mean by that?"

Varka sighs, rubbing the back of his head, then speaks "You remember the kid that was with you here a week ago? Ya well, I might have put him in a half dead state for three days during training, so he got to decide my punishment" he doesn't continue the words, only gesturing at himself

.... "So, lately, most of us have been doing well, we have managed to organize our new homes, and some of us managed to get jobs already. Others are simply waiting for approval, I even think some applied to do the paperwork here.. right?" I ask

Varka stares me down a moment, giving me an appreciative nod and replying "Indeed, some people did apply and we are in fact thinking on hiring most of them as temporary staff at least for now, since they seem to be able to truly nitpick details from documents"

"Well- considering that it was their job they did 5 days a week 8h a day if not more for however many years, it would be surprising if they weren't good at it" I say laughing a bit, only then I see Varka, as well as Jean who was standing behind him have a look of pure horror even so she tried to hide it. Pale and slightly unsteady her eyes were wide, these were the only things giving her away.

"Thank Barbatos that we do not have nearly enough paperwork for such a position to be needed" says Jean, then continues "I mean sure we have paperwork but it doesn't take longer than 2 hours normally and only 3-4 times a week at that."

My eyes widen and I ask "Wait, how do you have so little??"

"We aren't sure ourselves but hearing about how paperwork was their full time jobs makes me shudder" comments Varka, seemingly more bothered by that idea than his appearance.

- Citizen -

It has been a while since these 'otherworlders' arrived to Mondstadt, it is surprising honestly, the amount of knowledge they hold and... lack?

These people seem to know nothing of elemental energy, yet their craftsmanship, cooking and work with documents are simply on another level.

They say that 'their' 'world' had not any elemental power, they say that there was 'technology'. 'Technology' that allowed others to communicate over vast distances, they claim they have technology that let them move mountains, they say technology that let them fly and soar beyond the sky exists, apparently even technology that let them explore underwater.

If you ask me, that is nothing but pointless, sure they have better skills but they have not the such technology, their light show rectangles they call 'phones' are cool and all but pretty useless as all of them have run out of 'battery' and power.

'Otherworlders'? ya right. Probably just refugees from some nation.

- Church attendant -

Ever since our new accountant has showed up 'Alisa' everything has been much easier, she has managed to tighten up budget, spot leaks, it has allowed us to find embezzlers within the church.

Now we can truly use the funds to help people. Not allowing it to be handed to scum.

- Leo -

Brittney sits with a mending basket, fixing one of her outfits.

"Leo, did you notice anything odd today?" she asks.

"Odd how?"

"When we were waiting for Varka, Jean seemed... lighter? Like she wasn't carrying something heavy anymore."

Leo pauses. "I didn't notice."

"And that kid—Sane—the one Varka mentioned? We haven't seen him since he left the plane. But everyone acts like he's important. Even Varka."

"He helped us during the crash. Made a good impression."

Brittney sets down her mending. "Leo, he's been gone almost constantly for a week. And Varka said he nearly *killed* him during training. Why would Sane still be training with someone who put him in a coma?" Her smile was lost in the silence that followed.

Leo doesn't have a good answer.

"Either he's tougher than any of us, or something else is going on."

- Favounius knight -

You know, now that I think about we have been patrolling near the 'plane' as of late, Captain Kaeya is oddly focused on avoiding any damage to it.

What is more interesting is that it seems like a wind barrier has formed around it, very similar to the one covering old Mondstadt. Is Lord Barbatos protecting it?

- Arye -

A female crew member approaches Arye at the market.

"Mrs... I'm sorry, I don't know your family name."

"Arye is fine, but my last name is Morozov" Sane's mother smiles.

"You look so well. Better than you did on the plane. The journey was hard on all of us, but you seem to have bounced back the best."

Arye pauses. "I suppose I have. My son has been very thoughtful. And Mondstadt is... kind."

Arye touches her hair, which is now a natural blonde. The dye job that cost her money back home has somehow corrected itself over the past week.

"Still, it's remarkable. Most people take weeks to adjust. You seem almost—"

"Happy?" Arye finishes gently. "I am.. mostly, I miss my mother and father, they lived only two houses down back then, now but a world apart"

"I-I see, well, how about physically? you look much better compared to at the start?"

"Ah- well- yes my body has been healthier lately, I am honestly not sure why. It has become a bit of a bother though, several men have already hit on me-" Arye spoke, joyful at first but a little distressed at the end.

- 2nd Favounius knight -

Well this is troublesome, Varka had setup two full units just to stand guard around at night surrounding the outsiders home, apparently quite a few things have been stolen lately.

Clothes, watches, Mora, they don't seem to be targeting anything specific. It is so weird to be honest.

- Old Watchmaker -

I have come to this world, unable to see my son and daughter, not my grandchildren, not my wife.

I am but an old man now. Why must I have been ended up here? I can't even be buried with my family anymore.

I can't find what to do now, there isn't anyone who has time for this old man and his problems...

I have even started to make watches again, something I'd thought I would no longer need to do.

Something that I forgot I enjoyed so much because of the rich and arrogant brats that paraded around my work, unable to even appreciate it.

Thankfully here my work is greatly appreciated, I have apparently made some of the best watches people ever seen, of course the noble snobs came looking.

Thankfully unable to tell apart true art I was able to simply add some gold and gems to satisfy them while selling of my less successful pieces, ones that might not last a year!

As if I care!

Sadly I have found that my memory has gotten worse, I have even thought I made watches that I never did. What could this old man even do?

- Passenger and Dendro Vision holder -

It has been 4 days since I have gotten this 'vision' thing. I have now gained the ability to control the 'dendro' element.

Thanks to it I have been quite successful in starting a gardening business. I am now paid huge sums to help nobles with their yards!

Even then I can also take adventurer missions, but I-I I am a bit scared to go out of the city.

She holds the Vision, feeling its warmth.

She came here with nothing. No home, no family, no purpose.

And she *wanted* to stay. Wanted to build something. Wanted to prove that even in a strange world, she could create beauty.

The Vision appeared because she said "yes" to Teyvat.

Not because she was the strongest, or the most skilled.

Because she *chose* to accept this world as her home.

And the world recognized that choice.

A/N: Apologies for the delayed upload—life decided to be chaotic, and I had to prioritize keeping my sanity over my schedule. Worth it, though.

Powerstones are appreciated and comments are my motivation!
