The following morning, the sun shone through the window onto the sleeping little girl in the bed. She rolled over, trying to avoid the rays of light shining on her closed eyelids.
Eventually, she gave up on trying to stay asleep and opened her eyes in an unfamiliar room. She didn't know how she had got where she was.
She looked down at the blanket that was covering and the pillow that her head was just resting on.
She thought she was dreaming, so she pinched her cheek to wake herself up, but nothing happened.
Instead, the memories of the night before flooded her head, and she realised that she must be in the lady's house from the night before.
As the previous night's memories came, so did unfamiliar ones. They were of a girl similar to her in age but in a different world.
She had been left to survive by herself after her parents had died and ended up on the streets, with no food or roof over head.
These foreign memories started to intertwine with her previous life's memories. The similarities in their situations were uncanny.
How could two people who didn't know the other existed be so similar, when they weren't even apart of the same world.
As she contemplated these new thoughts, the lady from the previous night walked into the room.
"You're awake", she said with a warm smile. The little girl pulled the blanket in front of her face, in an attempt to hide, while admiring the person in front of her. Her saviour.
She nodded her head at the lady but didn't say a word. The lady looked down at her and heard a small grumbling coming from the little girl's stomach.
"Follow me, I've made breakfast for us", she said while chuckling. She turned around and walked out the doorway.
The little girl got up, out of the bed, and followed cautiously behind her. As she walked through the doorway, she saw pots and pans floating in the air.
The spoons were mixing by themselves, and porridge was pouring out of the pot, by itself, into the two bowls set at the wooden table.
"Wow", was the only thing the little girl could say, in reaction to these fascinating things happening before her.
"Oh, so you can speak", the lady said with a little laugh, "I was beginning to wonder if you were mute or too scared of me to speak."
The little girl, still in awe, shook her head, "I can speak, but it's always been better if I was quiet. Then I wouldn't disturb anyone", she said.
"I see", the lady said with a concerned look, "Well since you can speak, why don't you tell me your name. I can't keep just looking at you or saying hey, to get your attention."
The little girl sheepishly looked up at the lady and said, "My name is Zaya, but no one says my name because they think it brings bad fortune."
The lady walked over and crouched down in front of the little girl, "Don't worry Zaya, I don't think anything bad will come from saying your name."
Zaya, with a shy smile, said, "Thank you." A tear almost forming on her little face. The lady wiped the tear with her hand.
"By the way my name is Sienna. Sienna Croft. And as you can see by the many books and pages, plus the flying objects, all around the place, I'm a mage."
Zaya looked at her in awe. She had only heard of mages but now she was meeting one in person, and not only that but staying at her house.
Sienna smiled, "I know you probably have lots of questions for me about magic, but before that let's eat our food before it gets cold."
Zaya nodded and both of them sat opposite each other at the table. Two spoons flew through the air and one landed next each bowl.
Zaya grabbed her spoon and looked at the food in front of her. She hadn't had a proper meal in this or the previous life in a while.
"Go ahead then, before it gets cold", Sienna said in a suggestive manner. Zaya put the spoon into the porridge and had some.
As the food went down her throat, a warmth and sweetness filled her mouth and stomach. It tasted amazing and this could be seen in her facial expressions.
She smiled as she chewed and swallowed the porridge. Sienna smiled at her, seeing that she was enjoying her meal.
"If you want more, there is still some in the pot", Sienna said. Zaya nodded as she gobbled down the rest of the porridge in the bowl.
Sienna chuckled, "You don't have to eat that fast, we have plenty of time." The pot on the counter floated to the air and refilled Zaya bowl.
She started again eating the food as if it was her last meal. Once she was done, she lay back in the chair with a fill stomach.
It was the first time in a long time that she was able to relieve her hunger and that feeling felt amazing.
Zaya was about to get up and take the bowls and wash them when Sienna gestured at her to remain seated.
"You don't need to take the bowls." Zaya looked at her confused, "Watch this", Sienna said.
She took out her wand and waved it in the air. A light came from the table in the shape of a circle and then the bowls and spoons floated into the air.
Any mess on the table came of the table and floated to the bin. The floating dishes then went to the sink, where a rag and water appeared and started to clean the dishes.
When they were done, a cloth floated in and dried all the dishes, before the dishes floated back into the cupboard and draw where they respectively belonged.
Zaya watched this in awe and amazement. Sienna saw this and said, "The magic I just used is called rune magic, I'll teach you how to use it one day."
Zaya's eyes lit up, "I can learn how to do that, but I thought that only mages could use magic, not ordinary people."
Sienna smile, "I'm researching a way for everyone to be able to use rune magic as it is very useful, but you won't need that as I think you have the potential to be a mage."
Zaya all shocked, looked at Sienna with disbelief, "Really, I can become a mage. A real mage that can do all sorts of magic."
"Yes, I'm sure you will become a fantastic mage. We just need to see what elements and affinities you have before I can teach you anything", Sienna said.
Zaya jumped up from her seat and started to shout, "I'm going to become a mage." Sienna just laughed, while seeing the joy on the little girl's face in front of her.
Zaya stopped jumping and turned to Sienna, "When can I start learning, when can I find out what I can do as a mage?"
Sienna said, "Don't be too hasty, we have plenty of time. First let's go get you some clothes. I can't have you wearing the same rags forever."
Zaya's eyes lit up at the sound of new clothes. She was finally going to get something of her own and not the rags that she had found lying around.
She started to think that things were getting better for her and that just maybe she could make something of herself and not be put down by other's perspectives of her.
