Chapter 91 - Chapter 91: Serum Evolution Reward

Half a month later.

Security Council Secretary-General Alexander Pierce resigned and recommended S.H.I.E.L.D. Deputy Director Maria Hill as his successor.

He himself became a senior consultant in charge of external affairs, which was considered a semi-retired position.

Sharon Carter was promoted to Deputy Secretary-General to assist Hill with daily operations.

This news came as a surprise. The position of Secretary-General was not something just anyone could handle.

Not only did the job require analyzing S.H.I.E.L.D.'s mission performance with the Security Council, but it also demanded constant coordination with the Senate and the military.

The Security Council supervised S.H.I.E.L.D., but since its members were among the top leaders of their respective nations, they didn't have time to monitor every detail of the agency's affairs.

Therefore, the Secretary-General had to be exceptionally capable, articulate, and diplomatic—and possess the qualifications to command respect. Anyone parachuted into the position without prior S.H.I.E.L.D. experience wouldn't survive long.

Don't ask why—it had happened before.

That was why Pierce had managed to hold the position for so long. Expecting terrorists or rival factions to play fair was simply unrealistic.

Originally, the plan had been for Sharon to take the role. She had transferred from the CIA to S.H.I.E.L.D., but her seniority couldn't compare to the "three giants" of S.H.I.E.L.D.: Nick Fury, Maria Hill, and Phil Coulson.

To consolidate control over the Hydra branch embedded within S.H.I.E.L.D., Steve Rogers suggested that Hill take over Pierce's position.

It was a clerical job with little field danger—perfect for someone expecting a child.

"Ding! Mission to control the Hydra S.H.I.E.L.D. branch completed."

"Serum evolution reward granted."

The early morning air was perfect for a run. Steve decided to jog around Chaoxi Lake before escorting Hill to her new office at S.H.I.E.L.D. headquarters in Washington.

If he hadn't been "training his endurance" too frequently lately and needed a break, he might not have bothered with a morning run.

The power of jealousy was terrifying. Sharon and Nissa were both utterly exhausted, yet they still gritted their teeth and kept up—an impressive show of determination.

"Let's test out the new serum," Steve muttered, picking up speed.

His body blurred, leaving an afterimage behind him.

Previously, a super soldier's top running speed was around sixty kilometers per hour, as shown in Captain America: Civil War.

Now, without even using his full strength, Steve easily reached one hundred kilometers per hour.

A gust of wind from his sprint sent a nearby jogger—a tall Black man—flying straight into the lake with a splash.

The evolved serum had dramatically enhanced Steve's reaction speed and neural processing. Even at that speed, his surroundings remained crystal clear, preventing confusion or disorientation.

He pivoted sharply, using his legs to form a fulcrum, redirecting his momentum without losing speed.

The Chaoxi Lake track was about three kilometers long; he finished it in under two minutes.

Terrifying speed.

When Steve returned to the starting point, he wasn't even winded—just hungry. His metabolism was burning energy faster than before.

"Hey, man, are you okay?" Steve asked, looking at the man crawling out of the lake.

"Uh, yeah, I'm fine… Are you—Captain America?"

Sam Wilson still couldn't process what he had just witnessed. That speed was insane!

Was this really the power of a super soldier? At that rate, one man could wipe out an army.

Steve smiled and extended his hand. "Yes, I'm Steve Rogers. And you are?"

"Sam Wilson. Veterans Affairs Service."

Sam shook his hand, still dripping wet and half in disbelief.

Steve chuckled and patted his shoulder. "Go change your clothes. Let's grab breakfast. My treat."

"Good!" Sam replied with a grin.

After a pleasant chat over breakfast—mostly small talk about their work and current lives—they exchanged phone numbers and went their separate ways.

Steve then headed to a billiard hall that hadn't opened yet.

Polaris—Lorna Dane—was already waiting at the door. When she saw Steve, she smiled warmly and opened it for him.

The spring sunlight fell on her clean face, her short dark-green hair fluttering lightly in the breeze. There was something fresh and youthful about her, like a first love.

She wore tight black leather pants and high boots—cool and confident, much like Hill—but younger, fairer, and with a natural rebellious streak that made her every bit her father's daughter, the child of Magneto.

Inside, the place was quiet. Lorna walked to the bar and brought out the breakfast she had prepared.

"Steve, thank you for coming! I made breakfast for you—I hope you'll like it."

Without hesitation, Steve sat down and began to eat, his appetite immense after the run.

Watching Captain America devour the meal, Lorna leaned on the counter, resting her chin in her hands. Her emerald eyes sparkled with curiosity.

His face was sharp and resolute, his physique powerful yet composed. Even in stillness, he radiated restrained strength—like a tiger waiting to strike—yet his calm presence made her feel safe.

In less than five minutes, Steve had cleared the entire table of food, though he still didn't feel full.

The evolved serum had enhanced every aspect of his body. His food intake and energy demands had grown tremendously.

If an ordinary person was like a small bucket, a super soldier was a water tank.

Now, after his second evolution, Steve Rogers was a reservoir.

"Lorna, do you have any family?" he asked.

Hearing that, Polaris looked down, her expression softening.

She had recently returned to her organization to report, dealing with the loss of her boyfriend—and her brother, who unfairly blamed her for it all, had been giving her constant trouble.

"I guess you could say that," she said quietly.

Steve smiled gently. "How are you holding up? You can share anything with me—good or bad. I'm a good listener. And if there's anything troubling you, I'll do my best to help… as a friend."

He looked at her warmly—but deep down, Steve was already thinking about how to make her fall for him.

After all, a woman this beautiful, fierce, and untamed was not someone he could simply let slip away.
