Chapter 52 - Pressure Without Apology

POV: Emilia Conti

Retaliation didn't come disguised anymore.

It arrived clean. Legal. Confidence.

At 8:02 a.m., an email landed in my inbox and half a dozen others simultaneously.

Notice of Compliance Review – External Activities

No greeting. No explanation. Just authority.

I read it once, then again, scanning for the detail that mattered most.

It wasn't what they accused me of.

It was how broadly they were willing to define it.

"Informal coordination." "External frameworks." "Patterns of alignment."

Language designed to sound neutral while meaning everything.

They weren't alleging misconduct. Not yet. They were mapping proximity. Influence. Association. The kind of inquiry that doesn't need proof to be effective—only implication. Only repetition. Only time.

I noted the structure immediately. No allegations listed. No timeline provided. No request for clarification. Just a requirement to participate. To submit. To explain.

That was the pressure.
