I forwarded the email to Strauss without comment.

Her reply came ten minutes later.

> That's not internal.

That's federal-adjacent.

I closed my eyes briefly.

This was the part I'd prepared for—but not hoped for.

"Someone's watching," Alessio said that evening, reading over my shoulder.

"Yes," I replied. "And this time, they don't want to absorb me."

"They want to understand the structure," he said.

"Yes," I agreed. "Which is worse."
