Nora's POV
"I called him an Uber," I tell James, my mouth pulling into what I hope passes for a casual smile.
There's no point in lying to James, and honestly, I don't want to lie to him. He's the one person on this planet I trust completely, the one I love beyond measure, and the one who loves me just as fiercely in return. He's my partner in every sense of the word, my ride or die who would literally kill for me and has done exactly that before.
But tonight, I'm about to disappoint him in ways I never imagined. Still, maybe he'll grasp why I made the choices I did. Everything was for him, for our future together. I'd make the same decision a million times if it meant we could be together.
"I could have driven him myself," James responds, his voice carrying that familiar deep timber that usually comforts me. "Would have been quicker."
"This way we get to stay here." I move toward him, Robbie stumbling slightly behind me in his fake drunken state. "Just the two of us."
