Aeth:
"As seen on the map, the borders of the Kingdom of Kravendorn were not always this large. They expanded their territory by occupying our lands. Especially by seizing our northeastern territories, they cut off both our trade routes with other nations and our access to the sea. Even the Forest of Dreadful Creatures in the east extends only up to this point. To regain access to the sea, we have only two options left. Either we launch a direct attack to the east and destroy that cursed forest, or we reclaim our lands occupied by Kravendorn."
Fredrin:
"Attacking Kravendorn would be the more successful choice. If we attack the Forest of Dreadful Creatures, we would suffer heavy losses—perhaps our army would not even survive."
Aeth:
"Fred, believe me, the most terrifying creature in this world is the human. There is no enemy that cannot be defeated by a strong tactic. My intention is simply to reclaim what is mine—not to annihilate a forest!"
Fredrin (thinking):
Did I really just hear that? He says he can conquer a place that no one— not even their ancestors—has dared to march an army into for centuries. This emperor is truly different. Something inside me tells me that enormous changes are coming. Whether good or bad, he is someone who values his people and will protect his lands at the cost of his life. Though I once doubted this, lately I see that it is true. No matter what happens, from now on my path is tied to his!
Aeth:
"Your brother Ferdinand will take up a position to the northeast with all his infantry. And I will lead all the cavalry and capture Eryndor Castle, the beating heart of Cravendorn and the main border between us!"
Fredrin:
"My Emperor, I am not in a position to question your decisions. However, you know well that Eryndor was built not to defend against us, but against the demons. That means attacking the capital Selthor directly would be far easier."
Aeth:
"Which is exactly why the capital's defenses are weak. They poured all their strength and resources into fortifying that fortress. Therefore, the fall of Eryndor means the fall of Kravendorn itself. Even if it does not collapse entirely, the conquest of Eryndor will deal them a devastating blow and instill fear in their hearts."
Fredrin:
"Capturing an impregnable fortress with only thirty thousand cavalry… My Emperor, I am deeply worried for you. If anything were to happen to you, it would mean the end of our empire!"
Aeth:
"Fred, don't turn into a nagging old woman. Who said anything will happen to me? Remember this: there is no unconquerable fortress and no impassable wall—only incompetent conquerors!"
Fredrin:
"As you said, Eryndor is the beating heart of Kravendorn and its most heavily guarded stronghold. Why not take armored units with you? Capturing it with cavalry alone will be extremely difficult. In the worst case, even the entirety of Kravendorn's forces could be there!"
Aeth (thinking):
I know of peoples who conquered much of the world using only cavalry units, Fred. You are worrying far too much.
Aeth:
"I understand your concern. But trust me—this is exactly how I want it. If all their forces gather there, we will finish this even faster. At the very least, your brother will be able to conquer the northeast with ease and minimal losses."
Fredrin:
"So that was your intention from the very beginning."
Aeth:
"You thought correctly. Once Eryndor is under siege, the closest point for reinforcements will be the northeastern territories where Ferdinand's army will advance. By the time help arrives, everything will depend on Ferdinand."
Fredrin (thinking):
What was I thinking? This guy is someone who claims he can conquer the Forest of Fearsome Creatures. I feel stupid. I now believe he has other plans than what I've discovered.
Fredrin:
"Then when do we depart, my Emperor?"
Aeth:
"You will stay here, Fredrin. I will launch the attack alone."
Fredrin:
"My Emperor, what have I done to lose your trust that you exclude me from this campaign?"
Aeth:
"You're talking nonsense again, Fred. You are staying not because you lost my trust—but because you earned it. Do you expect me to leave the capital unattended during such chaos? I cannot leave this place empty. I need someone to govern the country, and the only one I can trust with that is you."
Fredrin:
"Then you stay here, and I will go to battle. I swear I will return victorious!"
Aeth:
"Fred, you are testing my patience. This victory is impossible without me. If you wish to fight, don't worry—the war has only just begun. Your turn will come. There is no need to drag this out any further."
Fredrin:
"Executing your orders exactly as given is an honor for me, my Emperor. I will not betray your trust!"
Aeth:
"Very well. You may leave."
Fredrin leaves the room…
Aeth:
"Fred, you think too much. Just be patient. Everything is only just beginning."
At that moment, a knock is heard at the door. A servant asks for permission to enter.
Servant:
"I have brought the Emperor's medicines, with your permission."
