Chapter 6 - Chapter 6: The Rules

Chapter 6: The Rules

Isaac picked up a small pebble from the ground and flicked it toward the Orc Warrior.

The pebble struck the orc's shoulder.

The Orc Warrior roared as its attention snapped toward them.

"Got its attention," Isaac muttered.

The orc charged forward, and Isaac immediately moved to intercept it. Steel clashed against iron as Isaac engaged the monster head-on, carefully controlling its movements.

"Young master, now!" Isaac shouted. "Slash its neck!"

Fate leapt forward, sword flashing as he aimed for the orc's neck.

Slash!

…but the cut was shallow.

"Tsk… too shallow," Fate muttered.

He prepared to strike again, but the Orc Warrior reacted quickly. It grabbed Fate by the leg and hurled him into a nearby tree.

Thud!

Fate crashed hard and dropped to one knee. Pain surged through his body, and for a moment, he struggled to stand.

"Young master!" Isaac shouted in alarm. "How dare you!"

Isaac rushed forward, his expression calm but furious. In an instant, he activated his skill.

(Shadow Strike)

His attack landed cleanly, forcing the orc to stagger back. However, the Orc Warrior roared and activated its own skill.

(Battle Cry)

A shockwave rippled outward, briefly disrupting Isaac's balance.

The exchange wounded the orc, but it was still standing.

Suddenly—

Fate pushed himself forward, sword held firmly in both hands. His eyes locked onto the orc's chest as he charged.

The Orc Warrior raised its axe.

(Axe Swing)

Before it could strike, Isaac threw one of his daggers. The blade embedded itself into the orc's arm, interrupting the attack.

That opening was enough.

Fate drove his sword forward, striking the orc's vital point.

The Orc Warrior stiffened… then collapsed.

They had won.

"Hahaha…" Fate suddenly began to laugh.

"HAHAHAHA!"

Isaac laughed as well, shaking his head in relief.

After a short while, Fate's injuries began to recover. Thanks to his Dragon race, his regeneration worked faster than normal.

"Young master," Isaac said, catching his breath. "Should we continue hunting, or do you wish to return home?"

Fate paused, thinking carefully.

"…We'll continue," he answered. "I promised Mother I'd become stronger. Besides, I'm only ten levels away from meeting the academy's requirements."

"If you insist, young master."

The two continued hunting.

Four hours later…

"I'll be right back, Isaac," Fate said. "I'm going to complete my class trial."

"May I ask which class you'll choose, young master?" Isaac asked.

"Warrior," Fate answered without hesitation. "That's my choice."

"If you excuse me, sir… may I ask why?"

"Because if I want to be strong," Fate said calmly, "I must become a shield—one that protects everyone I care about."

"I see," Isaac replied. "Please be careful, young master."

"I will."

Fate selected the Warrior class.

His surroundings changed instantly. White floors and walls stretched endlessly in all directions.

A system message appeared.

"Please select your weapon."

Various weapons materialized before him. After careful thought, Fate reached forward.

"I choose the sword."

The other weapons vanished.

Five goblins appeared, each holding a wooden club.

Fate activated his skill.

The goblins surrounded him.

Fate lunged forward and slashed the goblin directly in front of him, defeating it instantly. The remaining goblins hesitated.

"Come at me," Fate said, raising his sword.

Two goblins charged.

Fate rushed toward the one on the right. As it swung its club, he redirected the attack, causing it to hit the goblin on the left.

The left goblin fell.

Fate struck swiftly, defeating it, then turned and disarmed the remaining goblin before finishing the fight.

"Both of you are next," Fate said coldly.

The last two goblins trembled.

Fate sheathed his sword and activated Quick Step, closing the distance instantly. As they attacked, he used Unsheath, drawing his blade in a single smooth motion.

Both enemies fell.

Fate returned to the forest, where Isaac was waiting.

"Young master, welcome back. Have you completed your trial?"

"Yes," Fate replied. "I've completed it."

"Excellent," Isaac said proudly. "It's late now. Let us return home."

"You're right," Fate said. "Everyone's probably waiting."

They soon arrived at the gates of Kindspring Manor. The guards bowed and let them through.

Inside, the maid Anna greeted him.

"Sir, your family is waiting at the dining table."

"Thank you," Fate replied.

At the table sat Vale, Elizabeth, and Emily.

"Come, sit down," Elizabeth said warmly.

"You're back, big brother!" Emily said cheerfully.

"Eat," Vale said. "And tell us how the hunt went."

Fate shared everything what had happened as they ate together.

Later that night, Fate lay in bed, staring at the ceiling.

(Just three more days… then I'll be heading to Valhalla Academy.)

His eyes slowly closed.
