When the other humanoid being appeared, I lost all hope, until the taxi driver shouted at me:
— "Sir, don't panic. Please ignore them!"
I could clearly see that the driver was far more frightened than I was. His hands were shaking on the steering wheel, and his voice was unstable. I simply replied:
— "Okay…"
But deep down, I knew that ignoring it would not solve the situation. Still, I chose to believe it. After a few kilometers on the road, fear was still present inside the car. My heart was beating faster than an engine about to break down.
Then, without warning, everything became calm.
Far too calm, even.
After a few minutes, the driver spoke:
— "It was a minor entity. These beings are known to haunt this road."
Stunned by the existence of this kind of creature, I was left speechless. He did not stop, even though I wished he would stop right there. He added:
— "If I had looked at it, even for a blink of an eye, we would have had an accident. And we wouldn't have survived."
He continued, in a serious tone:
— "These beings don't only take human forms. They can also appear as dogs, birds, and other things. That's why, at night, when we hear a bird singing, we say 'ta kaboyi choubaka'. When they know they've been spotted, they leave the area."
He told me many things about them.
Too many things.
But one question kept haunting me.
The second silhouette.
I had seen it. I was sure of it.
I wondered what it was. Was it human?
What did it want? I finally asked the driver:
— "And the second silhouette I saw… what was it?"
The taxi driver, with a confused look, replied coldly:
— "What second silhouette?"
I frowned.
— "The one that was a little farther away. It wasn't moving."
He slowly shook his head.
— "There was nothing else."
His tone was firm, almost irritated.
The taxi kept moving forward. Then, without realizing it, my eyelids grew heavy.
I woke up suddenly.
Daylight was beginning to rise. The taxi was driving calmly, as if nothing had happened. The driver was driving peacefully, without the slightest sign of fear.
— "Excuse me…" I said. "Earlier… we were talking, right?"
He looked at me in the rearview mirror, surprised.
— "Talking? No, you've been sleeping since the beginning."
My heart tightened.
— "About entities… about this road…"
He smiled slightly.
— "You must have had a dream."
Panic began to rise inside me.
— "But you told me that if you had looked at the entity, we would have had an accident."
His smile vanished.
— "How do you know that?"
I continued, more and more nervous:
— "You talked about 'ta kaboyi choubaka'. About birds at night."
He slowed down slightly.
— "No outsider knows that."
I whispered, lost:
— "Wait… am I going crazy or what?"
He didn't answer.
I then looked out the window.
In a corner of the road, half hidden by the shadow, the silhouette was there.
The second one.
It was looking at me.
It was smiling.
Its smile was strange, almost forced, as if it were learning to imitate a human expression. It made a slow, unnatural movement, then tilted its head.
I immediately looked away.
But I understood one thing:
It wasn't a dream.
And above all…
It knew that I remembered.
