The Gedo Statue was the husk of the Ten-Tails—in this state, it took the form of a massive humanoid figure with ten spike-like protrusions jutting from its shoulders and back.
Those spikes appeared broken, as if something had been torn away.
Only the upper half of the statue emerged from the earth. It let out a hoarse roar, its nine eyes sealed shut—each representing one of the separated Tailed Beasts.
With his Rinnegan, Byakuya could control the Gedo Statue. Normally, he would have it release nine chakra chains to seal the Tailed Beasts—but they were cooperating willingly, so chains were unnecessary.
The Gedo Statue simultaneously absorbed the power of all nine Tailed Beasts.

"How can a tree be that tall? And it wasn't there before—it just appeared out of nowhere?"
"Are you guys going to check it out? Maybe we shouldn't... it looks terrifying..."

Far away, people had already spotted the towering Divine Tree.
Byakuya remained where he was, quietly observing the tree's transformation.
When the flower at the tree's crown bloomed, the Rinne Sharingan within it would manifest.
Alternatively, he could absorb the Divine Tree's power and awaken the Rinne Sharingan on his own forehead.
Either method would allow him to cast the Infinite Tsukuyomi.
Byakuya considered for a moment, then decided to try the second method first. If it didn't work, he could simply wait for the first method to occur naturally.
The second method was uncertain because, in the original story, Madara had only absorbed the Divine Tree after it invited him to do so. Before that, Madara hadn't known it was possible.
Thus, Byakuya wasn't sure whether absorbing the tree required its consent.

The next moment, the tree responded.
The entire Divine Tree began to twist and distort, collapsing inward with Byakuya at its center.

Byakuya's Six Paths cloak changed—black tomoe patterns now lined its cuffs and hem.
He knew he now possessed the power to activate the Infinite Tsukuyomi. Reaching up, he removed the headband-like seal from his forehead, revealing a vertical eye—currently closed—at the center.
This was the Rinne Sharingan, transferred from the Divine Tree to his forehead.
But he needed to ascend closer to the moon before opening this eye—the "Eye of the Moon."
Byakuya rose into the sky, tilting his head back to face the moon.
The next instant, the Rinne Sharingan on his forehead snapped open.
Simultaneously, the faint moon visible in the daytime sky transformed into a blood-red orb, the pattern of the Rinne Sharingan emblazoned upon it.
"Illuminate the world... Infinite Tsukuyomi..."
Byakuya formed a one-handed seal, projecting his eye's power onto the moon, which then broadcast the Infinite Tsukuyomi across the entire world.

The reason both humans and ghouls were ensnared was that humans also possessed RC cells—those strange substances.

Byakuya could die—it was just highly unlikely.
When the trigger condition was met, the Transcription Seal activated Izanagi, rewriting the reality of Byakuya's death.
