The Ashford estate was calm in the late afternoon, the large halls filled with the quiet sounds of servants preparing for the evening.
Bennett came down the wide staircase first. He was dressed for the theatre, wearing a dark green tailcoat that fitted perfectly to his slim build, a white shirt with a high collar, a grey waistcoat with subtle patterns, and dark trousers. His honey-brown hair was combed back neatly for once, though a few strands still fell loosely around his face. A silver pocket watch chain hung from his waistcoat, and he wore light grey gloves. He looked elegant, ready for the important guests who would attend the theatre that night.
He reached the bottom of the stairs and headed toward the entrance hall.
