Rain had been falling since dawn.
Not heavy. Not light either. Just long, fine drizzle that made the air feel damp and the sky look heavy.
Sophia stood in front of the window in the central room, gazing at the wet garden. Her hand instinctively rubbed her belly. It had only been a few weeks, but she was starting to feel her body truly changing. Fatigue came faster. Emotions were more sensitive. And fear… felt more real.
Not fear for herself.
But for the tiny life now depending on her.
Behind her, Adrian was talking to the head of security.
"I want the in-house team rotated," he said firmly. "Everyone who's been on duty for more than three months is to be replaced."
"We've already vetted their backgrounds, Sir."
"I don't want even the smallest gap."
Sophia turned around. "Adrian…"
She cut herself off when she saw her husband's expression. It wasn't just protective. It was tense. Alert.
As if he were waiting for something to explode.
Soon, one of the household staff arrived with a pale face.
"Sir… there's a package for Mrs. Sophia."
Adrian stood up at once. "Who's the sender?"
"No name, Sir. Only an address."
The air shifted.
Adrian walked quickly to the foyer table where the package was placed. It was a small box. Brown. Unremarkable.
Which was precisely what made it suspicious.
"Don't touch it," he snapped.
The security team immediately brought in scanning equipment. All procedures were followed. No explosives. No chemicals.
Adrian still didn't like it.
"I'll open it," he said.
Sophia stepped forward. "Adrian, maybe it's just.."
"There's no 'just' anymore."
He opened the package slowly.
Inside, there was only one item.
A pair of baby shoes.
White. Small. Brand new.
And a card.
Adrian picked up the card. His eyes read the short sentence written in black ink.
Congratulations on your blessing. The world is harsh for children born into the wrong family.
Sophia felt her blood run cold.
Her hands trembled.
"Who knows this address?" she whispered.
Adrian didn't answer. His jaw tightened.
"Trace the fingerprints. Check the cameras around the gate. Now."
The sound of rain outside seemed to grow louder.
In an office filled with glass and marble, Ethan stared at the monitor screen casually.
"It's been received," the man on the other end of the phone said.
Ethan smiled slightly. "Good."
Vivian stood not far from him. "You really want to provoke him?"
Ethan shrugged. "I want to see how stable Adrian is right now."
"That's not just provocation. That touches his child."
"Exactly."
Vivian studied Ethan's face. Something was different. Not just revenge. But obsession.
"Do you still think Sophia is yours?" she asked coldly.
Ethan didn't answer right away.
"She shouldn't have chosen Adrian."
Vivian let out a short laugh. "And now she's carrying his child."
The words were like a scratch.
Ethan turned off the monitor with one tap. "Sterling wants to play chess? Fine. I know how to move the pieces too."
That afternoon, Adrian sat in his study, staring at the replayed CCTV footage.
No clear faces. No suspicious vehicles.
The sender was professional.
Sophia entered quietly. She sat on the sofa, looking at the baby shoes now placed on the desk.
"I don't want us to live like this," she said softly.
Adrian turned around. "We don't have a choice."
"We always have choices."
Adrian stood up and walked closer.
"If I slip up, even for a second, they'll take something we can never get back."
Sophia stood up. "I'm not asking you to slip up. I'm asking you to stay sane."
Their eyes met.
Between love and fear, a distance was beginning to be felt.
"Are you sorry?" Adrian asked suddenly.
Sophia was silent. "Sorry for what?"
"Marrying me. Bringing my child into a world like this."
The rain stopped.
Silence hung in the air.
Sophia stepped closer and held his face.
"I don't regret loving you. Never ask that again."
Adrian closed his eyes and pulled her into an embrace.
But in the corner of his mind, one question kept troubling him:
Was he capable of protecting two lives at once?
That night, the crack finally appeared.
One of the senior guards, Daniel, was caught trying to delete access logs from the security system.
Adrian stood in the mansion's basement, where the interrogation was being held.
Daniel sat with a pale face.
"Who ordered you?" Adrian's voice was low.
"I-I didn't—"
Adrian slammed his fist on the table. "Don't lie."
Daniel trembled. "I was only asked to send the patrol schedule."
"By whom?"
Daniel bowed his head.
"Sterling?"
He shook his head quickly.
"Ethan?"
Daniel's breath hitched.
That was enough.
Adrian smiled slightly. Not a warm smile. A smile that made the room feel colder.
"How long has this been going on?"
"Two weeks ago…"
Meaning before the package was sent.
Adrian stared at him for a long moment.
"Do you know the punishment for betrayal?"
Daniel cried. "I needed money… my family was threatened…"
The words made Adrian pause for a moment.
Threats against family.
Classic tactic.
He stood straight.
"Take his family to a safe place. And him."
Adrian stopped. His jaw tightened.
"Get out of my territory before sunrise. If I see you again… there will be no warning."
Daniel collapsed to his knees.
After the room was empty, the head of security approached. "Sir, that was too lenient."
Adrian stared blankly. "This isn't about him. It's about the message."
"Message for whom?"
"For whoever sent it."
In the bedroom, Sophia felt something was wrong.
She sat on the edge of the bed as Adrian entered.
"Did you find them?" she asked.
Adrian nodded.
"Who was it?"
"Ethan."
The name made the air heavy again.
Sophia closed her eyes. "Why won't he stop?"
Adrian came closer and sat beside her.
"Because he lost."
"Losing isn't an excuse to destroy people."
"For some, it's the only way to feel alive."
Sophia took his hand and pressed it to her belly.
"We can't keep reacting. We need to be one step ahead."
Adrian looked at her.
"What do you mean?"
"We find evidence. We expose all connections between Ethan and Sterling. If they're working together, we take them down from the inside."
Adrian was silent.
It was no longer the voice of a frightened woman.
It was the voice of a mother.
"I won't let our child be born surrounded by threats," Sophia continued softly. "If needed, I'll get involved too."
Adrian shook his head immediately. "No."
"Don't shut me out."
Their eyes met again.
This time, there was no crack.
But unity.
Adrian let out a long breath. "Alright. But you stay under protection."
Sophia smiled slightly. "I never intended to leave your side."
Elsewhere, Ethan received a short message.
Your piece has been detected.
He smiled slightly.
"Good," he murmured.
Vivian looked at him. "You did it on purpose?"
"Of course."
"You wanted him to know you're inside?"
"I wanted him to know his fortress isn't as strong as he thinks."
Vivian narrowed her eyes. "And if he fights back?"
Ethan stood up and walked to the window.
"If he fights back… then the war truly begins."
The rain had stopped. The city glistened under the night lights.
And among the tall buildings, two men prepared to destroy each other.
Meanwhile, in between them.
A pregnant woman held onto the small hope that had yet to know how dark the world waiting for it would be.
