The night sky hung low over the balcony of their room, as if pressing down on their heavy breaths. Sophia stood still, one hand resting on her flat stomach that already felt different. There was a tiny life in there. There was hope. There was also danger.
Inside the room, Adrian slammed his laptop shut.
"I've replaced all the security systems," he said without turning around. His voice was calm, but Sophia knew it was forced calm. "Four additional teams posted outside the gates. No one gets in without permission."
Sophia turned slowly. "We're not on a battlefield, Adrian."
Adrian gave a faint smile. "For anyone who tries to touch you, this is a battlefield."
The words hung in the air. Heavy. Firm. Full of promise.
Ever since the doctor had confirmed the pregnancy, something had changed in Adrian. He was no longer just a husband. He had become a shield. Perhaps even a sword.
Sophia walked closer. "I don't want you to lose yourself to fear."
Adrian raised his hand, gently touching her cheek. "I'm not afraid. I just won't let history repeat itself."
History.
The word stung.
They already knew there was something wrong behind the deaths of Adrian's parents and Sophia's mother. The information they had uncovered over the past few days increasingly pointed to the same pattern: business pressure, vague threats, then deaths that looked like accidents.
And behind it all… a name that kept appearing in the shadows.
Sterling Group.
A major company operating in pharmaceuticals and defense technology. Led by a mysterious man named Marcus Sterling.
But there was still not enough solid evidence. Only fragments. Only shadows.
Sophia took Adrian's hand. "We'll uncover everything. But not at the cost of our sanity."
Adrian stared at her long and hard. Then he bent down, gently pressing his forehead to Sophia's stomach.
"I swear," he whispered. "No one will touch you. Not you. Not our baby."
Sophia closed her eyes. Her heart trembled.
But far away, in a tall building overlooking the city, someone was watching a monitor screen.
Ethan.
He sat in a dark room, illuminated only by the blue glow of several screens. His face was thinner than usual. His eyes were sunken, full of ambition that had not yet faded.
"She's pregnant?" he murmured softly.
Vivian stood beside him, arms crossed. "That's the news spreading in their inner circle. Information from a source inside the hospital."
Ethan smiled faintly. Not a happy smile. A dangerous one.
"Interesting," he said. "Adrian will only grow weaker."
"Quite the opposite," Vivian countered. "He'll become more brutal."
Ethan slowly swiveled his chair around. "Everyone has a weakness. And now we know where his lies."
Vivian looked at the screen showing CCTV footage from around Adrian's mansion. "We can't move carelessly. Sterling is watching too."
The name made Ethan fall silent.
Marcus Sterling.
A man he had only known as a major investment partner. But lately, Ethan had begun to realize he might be nothing more than a pawn.
He did not like being a pawn.
"Let Sterling play with his plans," Ethan said coldly. "I have plans of my own."
Vivian tilted her head. "And your plan?"
Ethan looked at the screen showing Sophia walking in the garden, accompanied by two bodyguards.
"We won't attack directly," he said softly. "We'll make them suspect each other."
The next morning, Sophia woke up with stronger nausea than usual. She rushed to the bathroom, her body trembling.
Adrian was up immediately. "Sophia?"
He followed her, holding her hair as she vomited.
Tears streamed down her face not from pain, but from a mix of exhaustion and emotion.
"I'm okay," she said softly when she was done.
Adrian carried her back to bed. "We'll move to the main penthouse. Easier to secure."
Sophia shook her head. "I don't want to live in a bunker."
"This isn't a bunker. It's protection."
Sophia looked at him seriously. "I want our child to grow up in love. Not in fear."
Adrian fell silent.
The words hit him harder than any enemy threat ever could.
He sat on the edge of the bed. "I lost my parents because I wasn't strong enough back then."
Sophia squeezed his hand. "You're not God."
Adrian closed his eyes for a moment.
"I just want to be enough as a father."
And for the first time since the pregnancy news had broken, Sophia saw vulnerability in the eyes of the man who was known to be unbeatable.
She held Adrian tightly. "You already are enough."
In the afternoon, something happened.
One of Adrian's security teams found a small device hidden near the east gate. A long-range bug.
Adrian stood in the control room, staring at the device on the table.
"How long has it been there?" he asked.
"Can't be certain yet, sir," the head of security replied. "Maybe two or three days."
Two or three days.
Meaning since the pregnancy news had started circulating.
Adrian clenched his fists.
"Trace its source."
"Already in progress."
It wasn't long before the report came in.
The signal led to a private security company registered as a subsidiary of… Sterling Group.
The name was no longer just a shadow.
It was a real threat.
Adrian stood tall. "Prepare the car."
"Where to, sir?"
"We start this game."
On the other side of the city, Marcus Sterling stood in front of the large window in his office. His hair was perfectly gray, his suit immaculate. An aura of power surrounded him like a permanent shadow.
One of his assistants rushed in. "Sir, the monitoring device at Adrian's mansion has been detected."
Marcus did not turn around. "I expected as much."
"Should we.."
"Let it be."
The assistant fell silent.
Marcus finally turned around. His eyes were sharp, full of calculation.
"Adrian needs to know he's being watched. Pressure makes people make mistakes."
"But what if he attacks?"
Marcus smiled faintly. "He won't attack without proof. And while he's looking for proof… he'll find something bigger than he imagines."
The assistant swallowed hard.
"And about the woman's pregnancy?"
Marcus walked slowly back to his desk. "A child is always the strongest card."
He sat down, staring at an old photo hidden in his desk drawer. A photo of two young men shaking hands Adrian's father and Sophia's father.
"You were too stubborn back then," he murmured.
Then he closed the drawer.
That night, Adrian returned to the mansion with a colder face than usual.
Sophia knew immediately.
"You went to see Sterling?"
Adrian nodded briefly. "He didn't deny it. But he didn't admit to it either."
"What does that mean?"
"It means he wants me to know he's involved."
Sophia drew a breath. "Why?"
"To provoke a reaction."
Adrian came closer, gently holding Sophia's face.
"And I won't give him that."
Sophia looked deep into his eyes. "What will you do?"
Adrian smiled faintly.
"I'll dig deeper. Not just about Sterling. But about everything connected to our parents' deaths."
Sophia felt something shift in the air.
This was no longer just about protecting the pregnancy.
This was the beginning of a larger war.
She took Adrian's hand, then placed it on her stomach.
"No matter what happens," she said softly, "we face it together."
Adrian bent down, kissing her forehead.
"Together," he repeated.
But deep in his heart, he knew one thing.
If war truly broke out…
He would become the monster needed to win it all.
And this time, no one would emerge unscathed.
