Chapter 34: The Double Ascension
Lucius
Viktor's blood tasted like a thousand years of power.
I knelt beside the Elder, fangs buried in his wrist, draining what remained of his ancient life. His eyes were still open—blue, cold, watching me with something that might have been admiration.
"The fledgling," he rasped through his ruined throat. "You orchestrated this. From the beginning."
I pulled back long enough to answer. "From before you woke. Everything that happened—the subway massacre, Michael's transformation, Kraven's exposure—I positioned every piece."
Viktor's laugh became a wet gurgle. Blood bubbled from the wound Lucian's blades had carved across his throat.
"Impressive. I underestimated you." His fingers twitched, reaching for a sword he no longer had the strength to lift. "You'll become what I was. Power corrupts all of us, eventually."
"Maybe." I returned to his wrist, drinking deeper. "But I'll make different choices."

The memories hit like a flood.
A thousand years of combat mastery, flowing into my mind in fragments and flashes. Viktor's first kill—a Lycan warrior, torn apart with bare hands before he'd learned to use weapons. The construction of William's prison—massive stone structure hidden in the Carpathian Mountains, designed by Selene's father to contain the unkillable beast. Marcus's true form—winged hybrid, the original Corvinus experiment, stronger than any vampire who followed.
Political manipulations spanning centuries. Wars started and ended for personal gain. Sonja's execution, witnessed through Viktor's eyes—his own daughter, burning in sunlight, screaming while Lucian watched in chains.
The location of every secret the Elder had kept for a millennium.

Viktor's hand fell. His eyes went dim. Eight hundred years of existence, ended in a warehouse basement by a transmigrator who'd been vampire for less than two months.
I released his wrist, turned toward the second corpse.
Lucian lay three feet away, silver blade still protruding from his chest, Lycan blood pooling beneath his transformed body. His eyes found mine—gold, fading, carrying acceptance rather than fear.
"The hybrid," he whispered. "Michael. He's the key to ending this war. Use him wisely."
I approached slowly, knelt beside the Lycan king who'd started a revolution nine centuries ago.
"You fought for something you believed in," I said. "That's more than Viktor ever did."
"I fought for love." His hand moved weakly toward the silver blade in his chest. "For Sonja. Everything I built—the rebellion, the war, the centuries of blood—it was all for her. To avenge what Viktor took."
"Did it help?"
"No." His laugh became a cough, blood spraying. "Nothing helps. But fighting felt better than grieving." His eyes found mine with sudden intensity. "Tell Selene... I never blamed her. For being Viktor's weapon. She was prisoner, like I was. Tell her... she's free now."
I nodded. "I'll tell her."
His body relaxed—tension draining, acceptance settling. I bit into his throat.

[ MEMORY SIPHON LV.2: EXTRACTING... ]
Lucian's memories were different from Viktor's. Warmer, somehow. More human despite the Lycan nature.
I saw Sonja through his eyes—beautiful, fierce, carrying herself with a defiance that reminded me of Selene. Their love affair, conducted in shadows, knowing discovery meant death. The moment he'd learned she was pregnant, joy and terror mixing in equal measure.
Her execution. The sunlight chamber. Viktor's cold pronouncement of sentence while Lucian screamed against chains he couldn't break.
The escape. The rebellion. Centuries of building an army, losing it, building again. Every plan leading to this moment—the hybrid project, Michael Corvin, the key to creating something that could challenge Elders directly.
And underneath it all, grief that had never faded. Love that transcended death.

[ ELDER ASCENSION: INITIATING... ]
The power hit like nothing I'd experienced before.
Viktor's millennium of combat experience merged with Lucian's nine centuries of Lycan mastery. My hybrid form expanded, evolved, incorporating Elder essence into something that had never existed. Bones restructured around new strength. Muscles rebuilt to accommodate power that exceeded any individual species.

I stood, feeling the new body settle around my consciousness. The warehouse seemed smaller now—not physically, but perceptually. Everything was slower, clearer, more manageable.
Viktor's combat mastery flowed through my movements as naturally as breathing. Lucian's predatory instincts sharpened my awareness. Two immortal enemies, finally united in service to something they'd never anticipated.
"Lucius!"
Selene's voice cut through the post-transformation haze. She emerged from the warehouse entrance, weapons drawn, eyes sweeping for threats before settling on me.
Then on the corpses at my feet.
Her expression shifted through shock, recognition, and finally—relief.
"You did it." She lowered her weapons, approached slowly. "You actually killed them both."
"They killed each other. I just claimed the remains."
She knelt beside Viktor's body, staring at the face that had defined her existence for six centuries. The Elder who'd murdered her family, raised her as weapon, lied to her every day for generations.
"I thought I'd feel... something." Her voice was hollow. "Rage. Satisfaction. Grief, maybe. But there's nothing. Just empty."
"He doesn't deserve your grief."
"No. But I spent six hundred years loving him as father." She stood, turning away from the corpse. "That doesn't disappear just because I know the truth."
I pulled her close, feeling the new strength carefully—Viktor's memories included countless instances of accidentally crushing allies with poorly controlled power.
"It's finally over," she whispered against my chest.
"No." I released her, checking the warehouse entrance. Dawn light crept through the shattered doors—dangerous, even with improved UV resistance. "Viktor's death will awaken Marcus. The first vampire. The original hybrid. We have days, maybe hours."
Selene's expression sharpened—warrior instincts overriding emotional processing.
"Marcus is worse than Viktor?"
"Marcus is what Viktor was afraid of." I moved toward the warehouse exit, grabbing Singe's unconscious form. "We need to evacuate. Extract everything from this one's blood and research. Prepare for something that makes Viktor look like a fledgling."
Michael and Rigel met us at the warehouse entrance. Michael's eyes were wide, taking in the carnage—both legendary immortals dead, their killer standing before him covered in their blood.
"You drained them both," he said. "Just... drained them."
"They were dying anyway. The power would have been wasted."
"That's not—" He stopped, shook his head. "We're not going to talk about morality right now, are we?"
"We're going to talk about survival." I pushed past him toward the motorcycles. "Dawn's here. We need shelter. Move."
The team followed without further argument. Selene took point, Rigel brought up the rear, Michael fell into formation with the automatic obedience of someone who'd realized arguing was pointless.
We raced through Budapest's early morning streets, UV light burning through gaps in the cloud cover, heading for the safehouse that had become our headquarters.
Behind us, Viktor and Lucian lay together in death—two enemies finally at peace.
And somewhere in Ördögház, Viktor's blood was dripping toward Marcus's sarcophagus.
