Chapter 36 - Chapter 36: The Power Vacuum

Chapter 36: The Power Vacuum

Lucius

Ördögház blazed with torchlight as we approached.

The mansion I'd infiltrated as fledgling, trained in as probationer, fled from as traitor—now I returned as something none of its inhabitants had anticipated. Elder Hybrid. Viktor's killer. The new power in a world that had just lost its oldest predator.

Forty-plus vampires filled the Grand Salon when we entered. Death Dealers in combat gear. Nobles in formal attire. Servants clustered near the walls, uncertain where the new order would place them.

Erika stood at the room's center, dressed in silk that probably cost more than the safehouse we'd abandoned. She'd positioned herself as acting Regent—filling the void left by Kraven's arrest and Viktor's death.

Her expression flickered when she saw me. Calculation replacing the carefully composed confidence she'd been projecting.

"Lucius Vane." Her voice carried across the silent chamber. "The traitor returns."

"The traitor is dead." I advanced through the crowd, vampires parting before me with the instinctive deference of predators recognizing superior force. "Kraven was traitor. Viktor was tyrant. I'm what comes after."

"You're fledgling, barely two months turned." Erika's composure cracked slightly—fear bleeding through the performance. "You can't claim Elder authority over a coven this old."

"Viktor is dead. I killed him via Elder Ascension duel after exposing Kraven's conspiracy." I stopped ten feet from her position, close enough for every vampire in the room to see my expression clearly. "By vampire law, I claim his seat. Challenge me formally, or kneel."

"This is absurd—"

I activated Hybrid form.

The transformation rippled through my body—black-and-silver skin emerging, claws extending, eyes shifting to the gold-and-blue that marked me as something unprecedented. Viktor's combat mastery made the display effortless, Lucian's predatory instincts sharpening my awareness of every potential threat in the room.

Power radiated from my form like heat from a furnace. Elder essence combined with hybrid nature, creating pressure that pushed against the senses of every vampire present.

Gasps rippled through the crowd. Erika stumbled backward, instincts screaming warnings her conscious mind couldn't process.

"I am hybrid Elder," I announced, letting the transformation speak for itself. "The first of my kind since Marcus himself. Question my authority—challenge me formally—and I will demonstrate exactly what that means."

Silence stretched for five seconds. Ten.

Then a Death Dealer stepped forward. Older vampire, silver hair, carrying himself with the rigid dignity of someone who'd served Viktor for centuries.

[ COMMANDER VALEN - 143 BP ]

[ STATUS: HOSTILE. CHALLENGING. ]

"I challenge," he said. "For Viktor's memory. For the coven he built."

Formal duel. Silver weapons. No interference.

I deactivated the hybrid form—overkill for what was about to happen. Valen drew his sword, a weapon he'd probably carried for hundreds of years.

I drew Viktor's blade. The sword I'd claimed from his corpse.

Valen recognized it. His expression flickered—grief, rage, determination.

"You dare wield his weapon?"

"I earned it."

He attacked.

Valen had centuries of experience. Centuries of training, of combat, of survival through a war that had killed countless others. His blade moved with precision honed over lifetimes.

Enhanced Reflexes Lv.5 made him look like he was moving underwater.

I sidestepped his first strike without effort. Parried his second. Let his third pass within an inch of my throat—close enough to make him think he had a chance.

Then I ended it.

Viktor's combat mastery flowed through my movements as naturally as breathing. The patterns he'd perfected over a millennium, now wielded against someone who'd learned from lesser teachers.

My blade shattered Valen's guard, continued through his neck, separated head from body in a single stroke.

The head rolled across the Grand Salon floor. The body collapsed moments later.

I cleaned Viktor's sword on Valen's coat, returned it to its sheath.

"Anyone else?"

Silence. Absolute, terrified silence.

"Then kneel."

Forty-six vampires dropped to their knees simultaneously—Erika among them, silk gown pooling around her as she surrendered to the new order.

"Bring Kraven," I ordered.

Two Death Dealers disappeared into the mansion's depths. They returned minutes later, dragging the former Regent between them.

Kraven had been tortured since Viktor's orders—before the Elder's death had interrupted the process. His face was a ruin of silver burns and claw marks. His hands were shattered, fingers pointing in directions nature never intended.

He looked up as they dropped him at my feet. Recognition flickered through pain-glazed eyes.

"You," he rasped. "You did this. All of it."

"I exposed what you were. The conspiracy you built with Lucian. The centuries of lies."

"I was trying to survive." Blood dribbled from his lips. "Viktor would have killed me eventually. Lucian offered alliance. Protection. I did what I had to."

"You betrayed your species. Conspired with the enemy. Caused deaths that served no purpose except your own advancement."

"And you're better?" His laugh became a cough. "You killed Viktor, Lucian, Soren, countless others. You're monster wearing righteousness like mask."

"I never claimed righteousness." I turned to Selene, who'd been watching from the crowd's edge. "Your family. Your justice."

She approached without hesitation. The pistol was already in her hand—the same weapon she'd used to shatter Kraven's grip during the awakening ceremony.

Kraven's eyes found hers. "Selene. I never... I didn't know Viktor killed your family. That wasn't—"

"You knew." Her voice was ice. "You knew everything Viktor did. You helped him maintain the lies for centuries. My family's deaths. Sonja's execution. The managed war that killed thousands." She pressed the barrel against his forehead. "You're not worth the bullet. But some debts require payment."

She fired.

Kraven's body collapsed. Two centuries of scheming, ended in a warehouse basement by the weapon he'd helped create.

"Dispose of him," I ordered. "River. No ceremonies."

Death Dealers dragged the corpse away. The Grand Salon remained silent—forty-five vampires processing the shift in power that had just occurred.

I ascended to Viktor's throne. The seat he'd occupied for centuries, now claimed by something he would have considered abomination.

"Marcus will awaken soon," I announced. "Viktor's death triggered the process. The first vampire. The original hybrid. Stronger than any of us individually."

Murmurs rippled through the crowd. Fear, mostly. Marcus was legend even among vampires—the progenitor whose blood had created their entire species.

"We have hours to prepare. Maybe a day." I surveyed the coven—my coven now. "When he rises, he'll be confused. Hungry. Looking for Viktor, for explanations. We need to be ready."

Erika spoke from her kneeling position. "What do you need from us?"

"Fortify the mansion. Stock blood supplies. Prepare UV weapons—Marcus is hybrid, but ancient vampires retain some photosensitivity." I considered the tactical options. "And pray. Because if we can't stop him here, nothing will."

The coven dispersed to their assignments. Selene, Michael, and Rigel remained as the Grand Salon emptied.

"You're really going to fight Marcus?" Michael asked. "The first vampire?"

"I'm going to kill him." I opened the System interface, reviewed upgrade options. "His blood is the key to Apex Form. Viktor and Lucian were steps on the path. Marcus is the destination."

[ UPGRADE OPTIONS AVAILABLE: ]

[ ENHANCED STRENGTH LV.9: 200 BP ]

[ ENHANCED REFLEXES LV.7: 180 BP ]

[ REGENERATION LV.5: 120 BP ]

[ LYCAN TRANSFORMATION LV.5: 140 BP ]

[ TOTAL: 640 BP ]

[ REMAINING AFTER PURCHASE: 1,448 BP ]

I initiated the purchases. The System acknowledged, began the upgrade process.

Evolution Sickness hit like a freight train.

My body convulsed, throne room spinning as sixteen hours of agony began. Selene caught me before I hit the floor, her enhanced strength barely managing my hybrid weight.

"The upgrades," I gasped. "Too many at once. Need time to stabilize."

"How long?"

"Sixteen hours. Maybe less."

She looked at Rigel, at Michael. "Get him to a secure chamber. Guard the door. No one enters until he recovers."

They carried me through Ördögház's corridors—the mansion I now ruled, though I couldn't currently walk through it unaided. Viktor's personal chambers waited at the corridor's end, sealed since the Elder's hibernation had begun centuries ago.

The bed was massive, designed for immortal comfort. They laid me on silk sheets that probably cost more than my previous life's yearly salary.

"I'll watch over him," Selene said. "You two coordinate the fortification. When Marcus comes, we need to be ready."

Michael hesitated at the door. "Is he going to survive this?"

"He's survived everything else." Selene's hand found mine, squeezing gently. "Rest. I'll be here when you wake."

I closed my eyes, letting Evolution Sickness take me.

[ UPGRADE PROGRESS: 3%... 7%... 12%... ]

Somewhere in the mansion's depths, Marcus's sarcophagus was cracking open.

The first vampire was awakening.

And I would be ready.
