Chapter 29: The Power Surge
Lucius
The System interface spread across my vision like a surgeon's display.

The numbers were beautiful. Cold, precise, promising power that would let me challenge an Elder and survive.
Selene watched from across the safehouse, expression concerned. "What are you doing?"
"Upgrading." I initiated the purchases, feeling the System's acknowledgment ripple through my consciousness. "Viktor wakes in forty-four hours. I need to be strong enough to kill him."
The first transformation hit like a freight train.
Enhanced Strength Lv.5 activated—bones densifying, muscle fibers restructuring, baseline power multiplying until I could feel the potential to crush steel with bare hands. The process was agonizing, vertebrae shifting to accommodate new stress loads, joints rebuilding around enhanced capacity.
[ ENHANCED STRENGTH LV.5: COMPLETE ]
[ POWER: NOW MATCHES YOUNG ELDER ]
Enhanced Reflexes Lv.4 followed immediately—nervous system optimizing, neural pathways accelerating, perception of time fragmenting as the brain learned to process information faster than human minds could conceive.
[ ENHANCED REFLEXES LV.4: COMPLETE ]
[ PERCEPTION: BULLET-TIME ACHIEVABLE ]
Regeneration Lv.3 came next, then Lycan Transformation Lv.3, each upgrade building on the last, each change more painful than what preceded it.
Evolution Sickness hit at the eight-minute mark.
My body revolted against the rapid changes—fever spiking, muscles cramping, blood burning in veins that were trying to accommodate power they'd never been designed to hold. I collapsed on the safehouse floor, convulsing, aware of Selene's hands on my shoulders but unable to respond.
[ EVOLUTION SICKNESS: ACTIVE ]
[ DURATION: ESTIMATED 8 HOURS ]
[ WARNING: UPGRADES PROCEEDING TOO RAPIDLY ]
Eight hours of agony. Eight hours of my body tearing itself apart and rebuilding, over and over, until the new baseline finally stabilized.
Selene stayed with me through all of it.
She held my head when the convulsions threatened to crack my skull against the floor. She wiped blood from my mouth when internal restructuring caused hemorrhaging. She whispered reassurances that I couldn't understand but somehow still heard.
When the fever finally broke—hour six of the ordeal—I lay gasping on the floor, every muscle aching, every nerve raw and oversensitive.
"How do you feel?" Her voice was distant, muffled by ears still adjusting to enhanced hearing.
"Like I died again." I tried to sit up, failed, tried again. "But stronger."
"Strong enough to face Viktor?"
"We'll find out."
The remaining hours passed in recovery. My body adjusted to its new capabilities, each system coming online gradually, testing limits that had expanded beyond anything I'd imagined.
Enhanced Strength Lv.5 let me crush a steel pipe like a paper tube—casual destruction that would have been impossible even in hybrid form before the upgrade.
Enhanced Reflexes Lv.4 turned normal movement into slow motion—I could track individual dust motes falling through filtered sunlight, could perceive Selene's heartbeat as distinct from the ambient sounds of the city outside.
Regeneration Lv.3 healed the silver whip burns from Soren's attack in four minutes—damage that would have taken hours now closing in real-time, flesh knitting together with visible speed.
But the best part was the Lycan Transformation upgrade.
[ LYCAN TRANSFORMATION LV.3: ACTIVE ]
[ - FULL CONTROL ACHIEVED ]
[ - BP COST REDUCED: 3/HOUR ]
[ - TRANSFORMATION TIME: INSTANT ]
I activated the hybrid form experimentally. The change was seamless—no pain, no struggle, just power flowing into a body that had learned to accommodate it. Black-and-silver form rippled with potential, claws extending, senses sharpening to supernatural focus.
"Beautiful," Selene whispered.
I deactivated, returned to human baseline. "Your turn."
[ ESSENCE PURIFICATION - STAGE 2: UV WEAKNESS ]
[ COST: 100 BP ]
[ TARGET: SELENE ]
[ EFFECT: UV SENSITIVITY REDUCED FROM SEVERE BURNS TO MILD BURNS ]
I cut my wrist, offered the blood. She drank—deeply, desperately—and the purification began.
The screaming lasted two hours.
Genetic rewriting was never painless, but Selene endured it with the discipline of someone who'd survived six centuries of war. Her body convulsed, skin flushing and paling in waves as vampire physiology adjusted to reduced photosensitivity.
When it ended, tears streaked her face—not from pain, but from something else entirely.
"Six hundred years," she said. "Six hundred years hiding from the sun. You're giving me the world back."
I held her while she cried. Not the tears of a legendary Death Dealer, but the tears of a woman who'd forgotten what hope felt like until someone reminded her.
[ CURRENT BP: 676/1000 ]
[ SELENE UV SENSITIVITY: STAGE 3 → STAGE 2 ]
[ EXPOSURE THRESHOLD: 30 SECONDS BEFORE INJURY ]
Michael and Rigel watched from the doorway—Michael with growing understanding of what we were becoming, Rigel with the awe of someone witnessing miracles after weeks of torture.
"The plan," I said, once Selene had composed herself. "Let's finalize it."
The strategy was surgical in its precision.
Lucius and Selene would infiltrate the awakening ceremony disguised as loyal Death Dealers—stolen badges, concealed weapons, faces hidden beneath ceremonial hoods. Michael and Rigel would position outside as backup and extraction team.
During the ceremony, when Viktor was weakest from extended hibernation, I would reveal the evidence of Kraven's conspiracy—the pendant, the blood memories, the recorded communications from the stolen radio.
Chaos would erupt. Kraven would be exposed. And in the confusion, I would challenge Viktor to Elder Ascension duel—formal combat that coven law required him to accept.
Then I would kill him. Drain his blood. Claim his power.
Clean. Surgical. Politically defensible.
"And if Viktor refuses the duel?" Michael asked.
"Viktor never refuses challenges. His ego won't allow it." I checked my weapons, counted ammunition. "Eight hundred years of arrogance make him predictable. He'll fight, expecting to win easily. He won't expect what I've become."
"And Kraven?"
"Kraven dies either way. Viktor will execute him for conspiracy, or we kill him when Viktor falls." I met Michael's eyes. "The only variable is Viktor himself. Everything else is cleanup."
Rigel spoke from his position on the bed, voice still weak but carrying conviction. "I want to be there. When Viktor dies."
"You can barely walk."
"I can stand. I can watch." His eyes held the same cold fury that had driven him to execute Soren. "Viktor let his enforcer torture me for weeks. I want to see him fall."
I considered the tactical implications—a wounded ally was a liability in combat. But Rigel had earned his place, and denial would damage the trust we'd built.
"You stay with Michael. Outside, not inside. If we need extraction, you're the backup."
"Agreed."
Dawn broke outside the shuttered windows. Thirty-six hours until Viktor's awakening ceremony.
I tested the hybrid form one final time—transformation instant, power absolute, BP cost manageable. The black-and-silver figure in the mirror looked like something from nightmares, but nightmares were exactly what Viktor deserved.
[ CURRENT BP: 676/1000 ]
[ ABILITIES: OPTIMIZED ]
[ STATUS: READY FOR ELDER CONFRONTATION ]
Selene curled against me as exhaustion claimed us both. The purification had drained her, the upgrades had drained me, and the coming day would demand everything we had left.
But for now, we rested. Warriors before the final battle, drawing strength from each other.
Thirty-six hours.
Then Viktor died.
