Red Castle, Maeger Tower, the royal bedroom.
Maeger Tower is a massive, square fortress nestled deep within the Red Keep, essentially a city within a city, where the royal residence is also located. Surrounded by twelve-foot-thick walls and a dry but spiked moat, it is an impregnable stronghold.
King Jaeharis II, Queen Jaeharis, Princess Leila, and Prince Rhaegar all lived here. After the dragons disappeared, the royal family increasingly preferred a secluded life within the palace to travel and adventure. Two guards stood outside the gate, protecting the drawbridge and providing uninterrupted service to the king.
The dragon kings have lost the arrogance of demigods and dragon riders, sliding into the position of earthly emperors. For the Targaryens, this isn't entirely a good thing. The former kings of Jaehaerys, who once roamed the North on dragons, are now legendary figures. As the divine nature of the royal family diminishes, so does the fear the nobles have for them.
"Father, it seems Rhaegar dreamt of a dragon!" Queen Rhaegar, carrying Prince Rhaegar, rushed to King Jaeheris II the next day. Dragon dreams were not uncommon, but this child's experience of dreaming of dragons was still quite premature.
"Is it a dragon dream?" King Jaehaerys II looked at his grandson. Dragon dreams were mysterious things; the Targaryen dragons were always accompanied by dragon dreams.
"Listen to me, my child, you should forget these things. When Rhaegar grows up, he should also forget the traces of dragons," said King Jaehaerys II, whose fear of dragon dreams and dragons far outweighed his fascination. His ancestors had heard too many tragedies caused by the madness and obsession with dragons—his uncle, Prince Aelion, and his father, King Aegon V. He did not want his children and grandchildren to suffer such a fate.
Princess Leila nodded in agreement. The tragedy in the Summer Palace was the most tragic example that had happened around them. The old king's madness overwhelmed his reason, and the dragon race suffered heavy casualties.
After the dragons disappeared, the Targaryen family made far too many efforts and far too many foolish mistakes in their attempt to awaken the sleeping dragon eggs. The dragon kings tried to call them back several times, only to either become clowns or lose their lives.
Nine wizards crossed the sea to incubate the dragon eggs stored by Aegon III. Baelor, "beloved by the gods," prayed over the eggs for six months. Aegon IV invented the wooden and iron dragons, while Aelion "Brightflame" drank wildfire in an attempt to become a dragon. Aegon V set fire to Summerhall. The wizards failed, Baelor's prayers went unanswered, the wooden dragon was destroyed, and Prince Aelion died screaming. Aegon V's fanaticism led to the decline of the Targaryen population.
"However, at this point, it's also necessary for you to know some secrets."
King Jaeheris II led the two to the most remote storage room in the castle. Inside were some items belonging to the dragon kings of the past, for posterity to admire and remember. There was a three-headed dragon armor from the past, as well as some swords, spears, shields, and personal seals.
King Jaeharis II, accompanied by Queen Raila and Prince Rhaegar, walked to a storage room where armor was displayed. The place seemed unremarkable; red and gold armor lay side-by-side, all bearing the scent of age. Even though they had once enjoyed a glorious past, their former master was gone, and the armor, neglected, had lost its luster. The king laboriously moved a red suit of armor aside. Lifting the beautiful carpet of Mil, he gently wiped away the dust, revealing a secret passage beneath the beautiful red bricks.
Following the steps, King Jaeheris II gestured for Princess Leila to also go down to the underground chamber.
Beneath the Red Keep lies a wealth of secret passages. These passages, traps, conspiracies, bloodshed, and struggles are all intertwined. But none of this concerns the Maegor Tower. The fortress is impregnable, its defenses impenetrable, completely severing any secret passages that might exist elsewhere.
But no one expected that there was a secret room beneath the Meige Tower.
Some thought the Dragon Kings had hidden the dragon eggs on Dragonstone, others thought they had hidden them somewhere outside King's Landing. No one would have guessed that the Dragon Kings had actually kept the eggs hidden in a secret chamber beneath Maegor Tower.
The king lit the lamps; it was a small, secret chamber with an arched roof. Inside, black dragon skeletons were arranged in a grid, with scattered dragon eggs on top.
These dragon eggs gleamed, possessing the quality and value of gemstones. In the known world, no one possessed more dragon eggs than House Targaryen. Even though dragon eggs had been stolen throughout history, and some disappeared during the Dance of the Dragons, House Targaryen still possessed the largest and most abundant collection of dragon eggs.
The golden-silver dragon egg with flame patterns once belonged to Illion the Brightflame, who later drank wildfire and was burned to death.
The dragon egg with white and green swirls belonged to Aegon V, who even conducted wildfire experiments on it in Summerhall, but without success.
The red dragon egg, with gold spots and black spirals, was once stolen by a King's Hand and then stolen by the Bloodraven Duke's spies.
There were also five smaller dragon eggs, their patterns and colors far inferior to the others, only a pale green remaining. Legend says these eggs were laid by the last dragon, a sickly, green mother dragon. She was small, deformed, and underdeveloped, with withered wings. She lived a short life; after her death, the weather grew colder, summers became shorter, and winters longer.
"This is the true treasure trove of our dragon race. Although the dragon eggs have not yet hatched into giant dragons, with these dragon eggs, our hope remains."
"When you reach the end of your rope, you can use the dragon eggs as wealth, as a means to recruit soldiers and make a comeback. But you must never harbor the thought of summoning the dragon and riding the demon dragon again," said King Jaeheris II, stroking the dragon eggs.
Rega stroked the dragon egg with his small hands; it was cold and silky, but there was no sign of life.
Although dragon eggs cannot hatch into dragons, they remain a form of hard currency in this world. A single dragon egg can easily buy a large ship. People still consider these remnants of the dragons priceless treasures.
"Yes, Father." Queen Leila nodded. It seemed the King was still worried about Iris and Rhaegar, fearing they had fallen back into their fantasies of summoning dragons.
"The matter of hatching dragon eggs cannot be forced. I would rather you accept the fact that the dragons have vanished than let you fall into the madness of hatching dragons." King Jaeheris II's expression changed, and he fell into deep sorrow.
"Achievement: Explorer (You have seen the most dragon eggs in the known world, priceless treasures lying dormant.)"
