Chapter 84 - Chapter 80 : The Claim Complete

Kelly Burkhardt left Portland three days after the Accords were signed.

She'd been present at the ceremony—watching from a distance, evaluating how I handled diplomatic complexity as she'd evaluated how I handled combat. Whatever conclusions she'd drawn, she kept to herself until the morning of her departure.

"You've built something real." She stood in the Spice Shop's doorway, her bag packed, her posture suggesting she'd already mentally left. "I still don't fully approve, but I respect it."

"That's more than you offered when we first met."

"You've earned more than I expected to give." Kelly's expression was unreadable. "When I came to Portland, I thought Nick was the only Grimm worth watching. I thought your 'Pack' was an aberration—something that would collapse the moment real pressure appeared."

"And now?"

"Now I think you might actually change things. Not just Portland—everything. The way Grimms and Wesen interact. The way power flows through our world." She paused. "I'm not sure whether that's good or terrifying."

"Probably both."

"Probably." Kelly moved toward the door. "Take care of my son's city. Whatever happens with Nick, whatever path he chooses, Portland should remain something worth protecting."

"That's the plan."

"Plans fail. Intentions collapse. The best-laid strategies crumble against reality." Her voice softened slightly. "But you've been good at adapting so far. I hope that continues."

She walked away without looking back—Kelly Burkhardt, legendary Grimm, disappearing into Portland's morning traffic. I watched until she was gone, then turned back to the work that never ended.

[ALLY STATUS: KELLY BURKHARDT]

[CURRENT POSITION: DEPARTING PORTLAND]

[RELATIONSHIP: GRUDGING RESPECT]

[FUTURE INTERACTION: POSSIBLE BUT UNCERTAIN]

[NOTE: ANOTHER GRIMM WHO SAW VALUE IN CHANGE]

Trubel found me an hour later, hovering at the edge of the planning room with the uncertain posture she'd developed since her liberation.

"Can I talk to you?" Her voice was steadier than it had been in the weeks since the battle—the conditioning breaking down, the person beneath emerging slowly.

"Always."

She moved into the room, examining the maps and documents that covered every surface. The evidence of infrastructure, of planning, of the organization that had defeated Royal forces and negotiated diplomatic recognition.

"Kelly's gone." Trubel's observation held something I couldn't identify.

"She has her own path. Portland was never going to hold her."

"But it holds you." Trubel turned to face me. "You could leave. You could take what you've learned, the abilities you've extracted, and disappear. Start over somewhere without the responsibilities."

"I could." I'd considered it, in darker moments. "But that would mean abandoning everyone who trusted me. The Pack exists because people believed in something different. Leaving would prove that belief was misplaced."

"Even though it's harder?"

"Because it's harder." I met her eyes. "The easy path was killing everything that threatened me, the way Grimms have always done. Building something that protects instead of destroys—that's harder. But it's worth more."

Trubel was quiet for a long moment. When she spoke again, her voice held decision.

"I want to stay."

"As Pack member?"

"As... something else." She struggled with the words. "I'm not ready to belong to anything. The conditioning made me property for too long—I need to learn who I am before I commit to a group identity." She paused. "But I want to be here. Learn from you, from Nick, from Kelly before she left. Find my own path as a Grimm."

"An independent ally."

"If you'll have me."

[ALLY ACQUISITION: TRUBEL]

[STATUS: INDEPENDENT (NOT PACK MEMBER)]

[RELATIONSHIP: STUDENT/ALLY]

[POTENTIAL: SIGNIFICANT (GRIMM, RECOVERING)]

[NOTE: ANOTHER CHOICE TOWARD DIFFERENT]

"You're welcome to stay as long as you want. Learn what you can, take what's useful, leave when you're ready." I extended my hand. "No obligations except basic decency. No submission, no hierarchy, no control."

Trubel shook it—the grip firm, the gesture carrying weight she'd learned to recognize.

"I want to be like you someday." Her voice held admiration she hadn't shown before. "Not exactly like you—but free to choose my own way."

"That's all any of us can hope for."

She left to continue her recovery, her training, her slow process of becoming whoever she'd choose to be. Another Grimm finding a different path. Another proof that the old ways weren't the only ways.

The formal Pack gathering happened that evening.

We'd planned it for weeks—the largest assembly since the Pack's formation, bringing together core members, extended allies, refugee representatives, everyone who'd chosen to be part of what we were building.

The Spice Shop couldn't hold them all. We'd converted the warehouse we'd acquired during the infrastructure expansion, filling it with chairs and banners and symbols that represented each faction's contribution.

Monroe opened with Pack history—the early days, the desperate alliances, the impossible battles that had become victories. Rosalee followed with infrastructure achievements—refugee numbers, safe house capacity, resource networks that spanned the region.

Then it was my turn.

I stood before them all—Blutbaden and Fuchsbau, Eisbiber and Klaustreich, Mellifer and Dämonfeuer, species that should have been enemies gathered under one roof.

"We started as survivors." My voice carried across the assembled Pack. "People running from threats we couldn't face alone. We found each other because the alternative was dying alone."

The crowd was silent, attentive. I'd spoken to them before—in Council sessions, emergency meetings, crisis moments. But this was different. This was declaration.

"We became allies. Learned to trust each other despite everything our histories taught us. Fought together against enemies who should have destroyed us—Reapers, Royals, assassins, anyone who thought we were weak because we were different."

Monroe stood with Rosalee near the front, their relationship having grown from partnership into something more. Angelina watched with the fierce attention she'd developed since nearly dying in the Kimura battle. Ariel held Maya close, the little girl representing everything we fought to protect.

"Now we're something more." I let the words settle. "A family that chose itself. A nation of monsters who refused to be monsters."

Adalind moved to stand beside me, her hand resting on the slight curve of her belly—the child growing there, the future we'd created together.

"Portland is ours." My voice carried the certainty I'd built over months of fighting for this moment. "Not through conquest, but through choice. Every person in this room chose to be here. Chose to trust something different. Chose to believe that what we're building matters."

[PACK ASSEMBLY: DECLARATION]

[ATTENDANCE: CORE + EXTENDED + ALLIES]

[TOPIC: PACK IDENTITY AND FUTURE]

[RESPONSE: UNIFIED ATTENTION]

"What we build here will outlast all of us." I looked at Adalind, at our child growing within her, at the future that extended beyond my own existence. "The Portland Pack isn't about me, isn't about any single person. It's about the idea that different species can protect each other. That Grimms can be guardians instead of executioners. That family can be chosen, not inherited."

The applause started slowly, built gradually, became something like roar. Pack members rising, cheering, celebrating what they'd helped create.

I stood in the center of it, Adalind beside me, feeling something I hadn't expected when I'd first woken in Daniel Cross's body.

Belonging.

Later that night, after the celebration had wound down and the warehouse had emptied, we found our way to the Spice Shop's roof.

Portland spread below us—the city that had become our territory, the lights that represented thousands of lives we'd sworn to protect. The Accords had made our position official. The gathering had made our purpose clear.

"King of Monsters." Adalind's voice was soft, her hand finding mine.

"Queen of Everything Else." I pulled her close, the blood pact humming between us.

"That's a lot of territory to manage."

"We'll figure it out." I watched the city sleep. "We always do."

Adalind leaned against me, her warmth familiar, her presence the steady center of everything we'd built. The baby growing inside her would inherit all of this—the Pack, the territory, the alliances, the enemies, the endless work of maintaining something worth having.

"What happens next?" Her voice held curiosity rather than fear.

"We keep building. Handle whatever threats emerge. Prepare for Black Claw, manage Catherine, watch for the hundred other challenges we haven't identified yet."

"And the baby?"

"The baby inherits everything." I smiled despite the weight of responsibility. "Including parents who'll do anything to protect them."

"That's quite a legacy."

"That's the point." I turned to face her fully. "Everything I've done since arriving in Portland—the fighting, the building, the diplomacy, the sacrifice—all of it was leading somewhere. Somewhere worth passing on."

"You've created a nation from nothing."

"We've created a nation from nothing." I corrected. "I couldn't have done any of it alone. Monroe, Rosalee, Ariel, Scalpel, the Mellifer, everyone who chose to trust something different—they made this possible."

"And me?"

"You made it worth doing." The admission came easier than expected. "Before you, I was building a survival strategy. After you, I was building a home."

Adalind's expression softened. The Hexenbiest who'd spent her life as a weapon, used by Royals and family alike, had become something else entirely. Partner. Mother. The person I trusted with everything.

"I love you." The words had become easier over months, but they still carried weight.

"I love you too." She kissed me—gentle, certain, carrying everything we'd become to each other. "Whatever comes next, we face it together."

"Together." I held her as Portland's lights flickered below us. "That's the only way any of this works."

The night stretched toward dawn. Somewhere, Black Claw was planning. Somewhere, Catherine was scheming. Somewhere, enemies we hadn't yet identified were moving pieces on boards we couldn't see.

But here, on this roof, with this woman, in this city we'd claimed—the future felt possible.

Not certain. Never certain.

But possible.

And for now, that was enough.
