Chapter 87: Taking Action
"What on earth happened? And is the owner alright?"
Murano Satomi didn't shed tears, not because she was heartless, but because the bloody scene had such a profound impact on her that she was on the verge of collapse, even forgetting to cry.
Finally, a figure dragging its slow steps appeared before the two.
It was a middle-aged man wearing a chef's hat.
"The owner is alright, but we might have some trouble."
As if noticing the two, the middle-aged man suddenly stopped. His apron was splattered with red liquid, and there was a pungent smell of blood on his face and body, which quickly spread in the narrow space.
"What?" Murano Satomi was stunned. She peeked half her head out from behind Jake and saw that the chef was obviously acting very strangely. "What, what happened?"
She also sensed the man's abnormality, so she didn't speak to him, but asked Jake, though it was more like she was talking to herself.
"It's nothing. Just run as fast as you can when I say 'run.'" He turned and smiled at Murano Satomi, a gentle smile that looked so warm at that moment. "Leave the rest to me."
Staring blankly at the smiling man speaking to her, Murano Satomi's dry eyes suddenly welled up with tears. She nodded firmly.
Sniffling, she said, "I understand."
This man was gentle, yet strong.
If Murano Satomi knew Matilda, or Katniss, or Mia, they could definitely talk to her, because they had all encountered this kind of smile and quickly fallen for it.
When you're in despair, he suddenly appears, offering you a reliable figure and a warm smile. There are probably few women in this world who can resist that.
Looking at Jake, who was still smiling and nodding at her, Murano Satomi wanted to say something more, but then she noticed that the chef standing in front of Jake suddenly twitched!
The left eyeball was swirling wildly in its socket, like a marble in a sealed box being violently shaken, while the right eye remained completely still.
"Behind...behind you..."
Murano Satomi trembled, extending her right index finger and pointing behind Jake.
At this moment, the chef's eyes had stopped swirling.
But his face seemed to have been sliced open by a sharp knife, splitting into eight pieces, like flower petals!
His two eyes looked like two hanging ornaments under the eaves, tied together by two thin fleshy threads.
Then, the chef—no, the monster—pounced!
The huge, petal-like fleshy face lunged at Jake's head!
Bang!
Jake quickly turned around and fired a shot.
Instead of a blood-splattering scene, there was a clanging sound.
A bullet was sliced in two and fell to the ground!
Parasites can mimic anything; even the blades they create can quickly cut through iron!
Although the bullet had no effect, it interrupted the monster's attack, forcing it to stop and stare menacingly at Jake.
It seemed the previous shot hadn't been entirely useless.
"Run!" Jake shouted.
Murano Satomi immediately struggled to her feet. Her legs were truly weak, but in this situation, running was the only way to survive!
Beside her lay a pile of mangled flesh. To stand, Murano Satomi had to brace herself against the counter, using it to quickly rise.
Suppressing nausea and fear, she managed to stand fully and then struggled to take heavy steps toward the kitchen exit.
What would normally be a mere five steps in a few seconds now felt like an insurmountable obstacle. Her legs were weak, each step a struggle. She feared that if she lost her balance, she would fall again, and she was certain she would never be able to stand again.
So she couldn't afford to collapse.
Finally, upon reaching the kitchen doorway, Murano Satomi leaned against the doorframe, catching her breath. Only then did she have a chance to glance at Jake.
The two were still locked in a standoff.
The monster sensed Jake's formidable nature and hesitated to attack first.
It was like animal instinct; lions don't easily let their prey escape, but they prefer to lie in wait, waiting for the prey to reveal its weakness before striking decisively!
As if confirming Murano Satomi's safety, Jake moved. He gripped his pistols with both hands and fired rapidly!
Bang! Bang! Bang!
Sparks flew as bullets clashed against the monster's petal-like face!
Jake's firing speed was fast and accurate.
The monster, however, was even faster; its petal-like flesh seemed to transform into iron whips, lashing out rapidly.
Then, a series of clanging sounds rang out as metal hit the ground.
Bullets were sliced in half and fell to the floor.
The two appeared evenly matched!
But to Murano Satomi's incredulous gaze, Jake suddenly rolled to the left, dodging the monster's unexpected attack. Simultaneously, he leaped and landed on the ceiling!
It was as if his feet were glued to the ceiling, preventing him from falling!
The sudden change in position left the monster bewildered.
It took the monster two seconds to realize Jake was on the ceiling, and in those two seconds, Jake had already fired four or five shots!
Blood splattered everywhere.
"Hiss!!" The monster's petal-shaped face emitted a hoarse hiss, but what greeted it was Jake suddenly leaping down from the ceiling and landing on top of the monster!
He bent his legs and braced them against the monster's chest, pinning it down, and aimed his guns at the very center of the petal-shaped face!
Bang bang bang…!!!
He pulled the triggers; the point-blank attack gave the monster no chance to resist!
The monster could only passively endure the assault, its body convulsing uncontrollably.
After emptying both extended magazines, Jake finally stopped, by which time the monster had completely lost its life.
Murano Satomi, who had been watching Jake's solo performance from the doorway, breathed a sigh of relief.
She shakily called out, "Jake-san~"
Jake then stood up from the corpse, shaking off all the blood that had been on his body!
When he stood and walked up to Murano Satomi, he was exactly as clean as when she had first met him.
"What on earth happened?" Glancing at the mangled flesh on the ground and the lifeless monster, she asked Jake fearfully.
"You should have stayed away from this kind of thing," Jake sighed, leading the still-trembling Murano Satomi slowly out of the restaurant.
The air outside was cool, but there was no smell of blood; Murano Satomi's condition improved considerably here.
After leading Murano Satomi out of the restaurant, Jake returned, handed the dead parasite's corpse to Dr. Simms through a dimensional portal, and then left the restaurant.
As soon as he stepped out, Jake was hugged.
"I was so scared just now, I thought you'd never come back..."
Holding the soft body clinging to his neck, that slender waist, Jake smiled, "How could I possibly leave Satomi-chan behind?"
