Chapter 22 - Atomos With Celluar Decay

The vibe was loose, the heavy tension of the Director's "Tier Zero" announcement finally starting to bleed away.

Joseph was the first to show off. He wasn't even touching the grass. He was drifting a few inches off the ground, legs crossed in a casual sit, looking like he'd finally decided gravity was beneath his intellectual pay grade.

"Since when do you hover?" Jay asked, poking at the air beneath Joseph's feet.

"Since I realized the friction of the earth was slowing down my cognitive processing," Joseph replied smoothly, eyes closed. "Plus, it's efficient." The Meeting

"Everyone. Listen up."

Tae's voice cut through the chatter. He was standing near the center of the field, leaning slightly on a dark wooden cane. No one asked why he had it—they knew better—but the sight of the strongest among them needing a brace made Kd's eyes linger a second too long on Tae's hands.

"Being Tier Zero doesn't mean we've won," Tae said, his face dead serious. "It means the target on our backs just got bigger. The Walker isn't going to wait for us to get comfortable. We need to bridge the gaps in our skills. Today, we learn from each other."

Tae leaned on his cane and pointed at Ayden. "Ayden. You're up first."

The Skill Presentation

1. Ayden: The Art of the Strike

Ayden stepped forward, cracking his neck. He didn't need magic for this. "Alright, listen up. Most of you rely on your abilities to do the heavy lifting. But if your mana fails, you've got nothing. Hand-to-hand isn't about hitting hard; it's about the economy of motion."

He spent the next hour breaking down close-quarters combat. Besides Tae and Joseph, Ayden's "hands" were legendary. He showed them how to turn a parry into a shattered jaw before the opponent even realized their guard was down.

2. Jay: The Absolute Shield

Jay took over next, focusing on defense. "Defense isn't a wall," Jay explained, demonstrating his Absolute Anchor. "It's a foundation. If you aren't anchored, the strongest shield in the world will just turn you into a flying brick." He showed them how to brace their internal energy to absorb impact, teaching them tips on how to remain unmoved even when the world is in literal chaos around them.

3. Kd: The Shadow Instinct

Kd didn't say much—he never did. He did "Kd things." He demonstrated how to move without intent, showing them how to draw a blade (or a fist) without the air even rippling. It was about lethality and speed. He showed them how to find the "seams" in a fight where an opponent is most vulnerable.

4. The Specialist Trio

Jax, Rix, and Cygnus broke off into their own rhythm. Jax and Rix practiced high-speed synchronization, moving like a two-man hurricane, while Cygnus sat nearby, his eyes glowing as he mapped out the energy flow of the entire field, providing tactical feedback that sounded more like a chess grandmaster than a teenager.

5. Joseph: The Mental Plane

Joseph, still floating, took over the intellectual side. "Most of you fight with your muscles. You need to fight with your variables." He led a session on Thinking and Calculation, showing them how to process multiple outcomes of a fight simultaneously so they weren't just reacting, but dictating the future.

The Final Lesson: Tae's Meditation

Finally, Tae called them all together. He sat down on a stone bench, resting his cane against his leg.

"The most important skill isn't a punch or a shield," Tae said softly. "It's the center."

He had them all sit in a circle. He taught them a specific form of High-Level Meditation—the kind he used to keep the "Logos" and the "Buddha" from tearing his mind apart. It wasn't just about breathing; it was about quieting the soul so that when they finally had to unleash their Tier Zero powers, the power didn't own them—they owned the power.

For a few hours, there was no Walker. No Association. No ranks. Just eight brothers in the grass, getting stronger for the war they knew was coming. Tae stood in the center of the field, leaning his weight onto his dark wooden cane. His eyes were closed, his voice calm and rhythmic as he led the group's meditation.

"The biggest mistake a hunter can make is thinking they are safe just because they are strong," Tae said, the wind ruffling his hair. "Never let your focus narrow. If you can't sense the air shifting behind you, you're already dead. You have to be aware of every atom in—"

BOOM.

A blur of movement erupted from the treeline. It was a streak of unmatched speed, aimed directly at the back of Tae's head. The figure moved so fast the air screamed, a fist cocked back with enough momentum to shatter a boulder.

Clang!

A flash of steel met the strike just inches from Tae's neck. Kd had moved without a sound, his single katana drawn and steady, blocking the mysterious attacker's fist with the flat of his blade.

"Use your own lessons, Tae," Kd muttered, his eyes narrowed and dangerous. "You were talking too much."

Tae didn't even turn around. He stayed leaned on his cane, a small, knowing smirk playing on his lips. "I sensed him the second he stepped onto the property, Kd. I could have taken him down at any point during that sentence. I just wanted to see if you were paying attention."

The Confrontation

The attacker leaped back, landing gracefully on the grass. He was a young man with a sharp look in his eyes, his hands still humming with a strange, high-frequency vibration.

"Who are you?" Kd demanded, his grip tightening on his hilt. "Give me one reason why I shouldn't take your head off right now."

The stranger raised his hands in a mock surrender. "Easy, easy. I'm a Spirit Hunter. Name's Ethan. I heard the rumors about the 'Transcendents' and wanted to see the legends for myself. I want in. I want to join the unit."

Kd scoffed, his gaze cold. "We don't just 'let people join.' This isn't a club; it's a brotherhood. And right now, you're just a target."

Tae turned around then, his cane clicking against a stone as he faced the newcomer. He looked Ethan up and down, sensing the unique, vibrating energy coming from him—the power of The Particle Architect.

"If you want in, you prove it," Tae said firmly. He glanced at Kd. "Kd. Test him."

Kd vs. Ethan

Kd didn't need to be told twice. He vanished.

Ethan's eyes widened, and he immediately threw his hand toward the ground. "Atomize: Shield!" he yelled. The very air in front of him seemed to thicken as he manipulated the oxygen molecules into a dense, vibrating barrier.

CRACK.

Kd's strike hit the barrier, the sheer force causing the ground to crater. Ethan slid back, his teeth gritted. He swung his arm, and a handful of pebbles from the dirt rose into the air, their atomic structure changing instantly into razor-sharp metallic needles. He sent them flying at Kd like a railgun.

Kd moved like a shadow, parrying the needles with casual flicks of his katana. He was too fast, too experienced. Within seconds, Kd was behind Ethan, the cold edge of his blade resting against Ethan's throat.

"You're creative," Kd whispered, "but your molecules are too slow."

The Acceptance

The field went silent. Kd sheathed his sword and stepped back. He didn't smile, and he clearly didn't "like" the guy yet, but he gave a short, stiff nod of respect.

"He's got guts," Tae said to Kd. "And a hell of an ability. He'll do."

Ethan took a deep breath, shaking out the tension in his hands. He turned to Tae and, without hesitation, gave a sharp, respectful bow.

"Thank you, Captain," Ethan said.

Tae raised an eyebrow. "Captain?"

"That's what you are, isn't it?" Ethan smiled, his eyes bright. "The one holding this crazy group together. I'll follow the lead."

Ethan then turned to the rest of the group, who were watching with various levels of interest. Joseph was still hovering, Jay and Ayden looked impressed, and the others were nodding.

"I'm Ethan," he announced, his voice carrying across the orphanage grounds. "The Particle Architect. It's an honor to be part of Tier Zero

The sun was high over the orphanage training field as the newly formed Tier Zero unit prepared for their first team sparring session. The air hummed with a different kind of energy now that Ethan, the Particle Architect, had joined the ranks.

"Alright, boys," Tae said, leaning on his cane at the edge of the field. "Let's see how the new guy integrates. No holding back—well, maybe 10% holding back. I don't want to explain to the Director why the orphanage is a crater."

The Sparring Begins

Ethan stepped into the center, looking at the heavy hitters surrounding him. He didn't look intimidated; he looked like he was calculating.

Ayden was the first to move, launching forward with a lightning-fast flurry of punches. Ethan didn't dodge. Instead, he utilized Density Control, instantly increasing the atomic spacing of his own forearm to match the density of industrial diamond. Ayden's fist collided with Ethan's arm with a loud clack, and Ayden leaped back, shaking his hand in pain.

"Ow! What are you made of, brick?" Ayden yelped.

"Close," Ethan smirked. "Just a better arrangement of carbon."

Jay stepped in next, trying to pin Ethan down with his Absolute Anchor weight. Ethan countered by Changing Scale, shrinking his atomic structure until he was barely a foot tall, causing Jay's massive strike to sail right over his head. A second later, Ethan enlarged himself back to normal height, using the momentum to deliver a Nuclear Fusion-enhanced kick that released a burst of intense light and heat, forcing Jay to cover his eyes.

Overpowering the Field

As Kd blurred into motion, Ethan realized he needed more than just physical changes. He tapped into Pseudo Spatial Manipulation, collapsing the empty space between molecules to warp the distance between him and Kd. Every time Kd swung his katana, Ethan seemed to be an inch further away than he appeared.

"Stay still!" Kd growled, his black lightning flickering.

"Can't hit what you can't measure," Ethan replied. He then unleashed an Energy Blast, harnessing atomic energy into a focused wave that pushed Kd and Rix back several yards. To keep them at bay, he generated a Radioactive Aura, creating a shimmering field of energy that acted as both a shield and a deterrent.

Even Joseph, floating above, had to intervene. He tried to calculate Ethan's next move, but Ethan used Atomic Restructuring to transmute the very air around Joseph into heavy lead vapor, momentarily messing with Joseph's buoyancy.

For a moment, it looked like Ethan was actually holding his own against the strongest hunters in the world. He was a whirlwind of transmutation and energy.

Tae Intervenes

Just as Ethan was about to initiate another Nuclear Fusion charge to finish the round, a dark wooden cane gently tapped the ground.

Thump.

The shockwave didn't destroy anything; it simply nullified all active mana in the area. Ethan's radioactive aura vanished, Jay's anchor broke, and Joseph dropped six inches out of the sky.

Tae walked into the center of the chaos, his cane clicking rhythmically. He looked at Ethan, then at the rest of the boys who were panting and covered in soot.

"Okay, okay," Tae said, a small, amused smile on his face. "Ethan, you've got great hands. But if you use that much nuclear fusion again, you're going to cook Jay like a Thanksgiving turkey."

Tae turned to the group. "And the rest of you? You got beat by a guy who literally just moved in. If I have to come in here and save you from the 'new kid' again, we're doing ten miles of hill sprints. With Joseph carrying the car."

"Wait, why me?!" Joseph complained, finally landing on his feet.

Tae just winked at Ethan. "Nice work, Captain's orders: everyone go get cleaned up. Ethan, you're buying the first round of drinks for almost nuking your teammates."

Ethan laughed, wiping dust off his shoulder. "Fair enough, Captain."

Hours later after many drinks

Tae's boots clicked rhythmically against the floorboards as he moved through the silent hallway of the orphanage. The house was still, the heavy breathing of his sleeping brothers—his team—the only sound. He reached the end of the hall and pushed open the door to Sister Patricia's old office.

The room smelled of dust and old memories. Tae sat in her high-backed chair, his body finally giving in to the tremors he'd been hiding all day. His hands shook so violently he had to grip the edge of the desk just to stay upright. He felt the weight of his dark wooden cane leaning against his leg, a silent witness to his physical decline.

"Logos," he rasped, his voice barely a whisper. "Status report."

Immediately, his vision was overlaid with translucent blue geometric patterns.

 LOGOS ENGINE: DIAGNOSTIC ACTIVE]

Current Status: Host vessel at 68% integrity.

Warning: The Omni-Power is accelerating cellular degradation. The "Buddha" frequency is too high for a biological heart to sustain.

Probability of Vessel Collapse: High.

Tae stared at the flickering blue data. "I can feel it. It's like my blood is turning into liquid light. How long until the others figure it out?"

Logos Engine: Subject Kd is already 92% certain of a physical anomaly. Subject Joseph has noted a 4-millisecond delay in your reaction times.

Analysis: They are Tier Zero. You cannot hide a fracture in the foundation from the architects standing on it. They can't know," Tae said, his voice hardening. "If they find out the power is eating me alive, they'll hesitate. They'll try to find a way to fix me instead of focusing on the Walker."

He stood up, leaning heavily on the cane as he turned to leave. But as he opened the office door and stepped back into the hallway, he froze.

A shadow was leaning against the far wall, the moonlight catching the silver hilt of a single katana.

"You're a terrible liar, Tae," Kd said, his voice low and jagged. He didn't move, but the intensity of his gaze felt like a blade. "I've been standing here for twenty minutes. I heard you talking to yourself. Or talking to whatever that weird energy is inside your head."

Tae gripped his cane tighter. "Go back to bed, Kd. That's an order."

"Orders don't work on me when I can smell the ozone coming off your skin," Kd countered, stepping into the pale light. "You're breaking, aren't you?"

Before Tae could respond, another door clicked open. Joseph stepped out, his eyes glowing with a faint, calculating light.

Inside Tae's mind, the Logos Engine flared with a rapid-fire sequence of warnings. LOGOS ENGINE: CRITICAL ALERT]

Anomaly Detected: Subject Joseph is accessing a cognitive processing frequency that matches my own internal clock. > Warning: Subject Joseph's analytical speed is mirroring the Logos Engine. Concealment of biological data is now impossible. Tae felt a chill go down his spine. Joseph wasn't just guessing—his mind was moving at the same speed as the sentient supercomputer in Tae's head. He was seeing the "code" of Tae's failing health in real-time.

"I can see the cellular decay, Tae," Joseph said, his voice eerily calm. "I've been tracking your vitals since the spar with Ethan. Your heart rate isn't rhythmic; it's algorithmic. You aren't just tired. You're fading."

Tae looked at his two oldest friends, the secret finally shattered. He was the Captain, but he was standing in a hallway between a man who could feel his pain and a man who could calculate his death.
