Chapter 28 - chapter 29: whispers and Tensions

The morning sun spilled through the café windows in long, lazy beams, cutting across the polished wood floors. Kiara moved behind the counter, steaming milk and arranging pastries, trying to ignore the subtle hum of the city outside—but she couldn't. Life had become a constant blur of attention, scrutiny, and expectation, and today was no different.

Lucas leaned casually against the counter, doodling in his notebook, his gaze flicking occasionally toward Lisa, who sat nearby scrolling through her phone. They were close friends, yes, but neither admitted the small flutter in their chest whenever the other laughed.

"Lucas," Lisa said finally, looking up with that teasing grin she always reserved for him. "You realize I can see what you're drawing, right?"

Lucas froze, notebook half-raised. "I… uh… it's nothing," he muttered, trying to hide the page.

Lisa leaned closer, elbow brushing his. "Sure. Nothing that looks suspiciously like… me?"

He groaned quietly. "You're impossible."

The quiet banter made Kiara smile faintly as she placed a cappuccino in front of a customer. Life around her was moving, alive, and messy—but normal in a way that made her heart feel steadier.

Outside, two figures approached, making their presence known long before they reached the café doors: Cicelo and Bone, minor but persistent campus troublemakers. Cicelo's smirk always carried mischief, and Bone, loyal to him in every scheme, followed with a cautious grin.

"You sure she's really worth this, man?" Bone whispered to Cicelo as they lingered near the entrance.

"She's everywhere now," Cicelo replied. "Might as well see what all the fuss is about."

Inside, they made themselves known by leaning against the doorway, eyeing Kiara and Shane from across the room. Their attention wasn't subtle, but it wasn't loud either—enough to make Shane's jaw tighten.

Kiara noticed immediately. Her chest tightened, not with fear, but with that sense of "intrusion"—that tension that always seemed to follow her when visibility increased.

Shane moved slightly in front of her, though not aggressively. Just presence, enough to mark space.

"Cicelo," Shane said calmly, though his tone carried weight. "What do you want?"

Cicelo's smirk widened. "Nothing… just seeing if the rumors were true. You really did put her in the spotlight, huh?"

Kiara stepped forward. "I'm not in anyone's spotlight but my own. And I can handle myself."

Bone rolled his eyes. "Calm down, it's just… campus stuff."

Shane didn't respond, but Kiara felt the surge of protection in his stillness.

Meanwhile, Lucas and Lisa had become unwitting spectators to the confrontation, exchanging whispered commentary.

"Shane's really tense," Lisa said softly.

"Yeah," Lucas murmured, glancing at her. "And… it's kind of impressive. You know, the way he doesn't overreact."

Lisa raised an eyebrow. "Impressive, huh?"

Lucas froze, cheeks warm. "I—uh—I mean… yeah. Totally."

The subtle tension between them mirrored, in a quieter way, the tension in the room with Cicelo and Bone.

The encounter escalated only slightly—Cicelo leaning a little too close, Bone nudging the doorframe—but then Shane's calm authority took over.

"Campus is for learning, not gossip," he said, voice low and controlled. "Step outside if you want to talk."

Cicelo laughed, half-sarcastic, half-respectful. "Maybe later."

The two left, their presence lingering like a shadow. Shane exhaled slowly, turning to Kiara.

"You okay?" he asked quietly.

She nodded. "Yeah. Better than okay… I think."

He brushed a loose strand of hair behind her ear, a small, gentle gesture that made her chest flutter.

By the afternoon, the café had returned to its usual rhythm. A few minor characters appeared naturally:

Hana, the new barista, dropped off an order for the back room.

Luis Fernandez, a delivery guy, carried boxes past the counter, nodding politely at Shane.

Lucas and Lisa continued their playful teasing, unaware of Shane's small smiles as he watched Kiara interact with customers.

The quiet intimacy of these moments—the small touches, the gentle laughter, the ordinary movements around them—reminded Kiara that life was not just about storms and scrutiny.

Even amidst jealousy, rumors, and minor conflicts, there were these slices of normalcy, fragile but grounding.

Shane's hand brushed hers as he passed by. Not a promise, not even a declaration. Just presence.

And Kiara, in that small, electric moment, realized that the world could be chaotic, people could be intrusive, and life could be messy—but when he was there, she could face it.

Even Cicelo and Bone, even minor disturbances, couldn't touch what was quietly theirs.
