Chapter 30 - Chapter 31: Echoes of the past

Perfect! Chapter 31

🤍

The morning sun painted the campus in golden streaks, and Kiara walked briskly across the quad, her backpack resting lightly on her shoulder. The week had been exhausting—rumors, whispers, and the constant pressure to perform—but Shane's presence lingered in her mind like a steady heartbeat.

She spotted Lucas and Lisa near the fountain, debating over an assignment that had somehow turned into playful bickering.

"Morning, you two," Kiara greeted, smiling.

Lucas looked up, eyes flicking toward Lisa before settling on Kiara. "Morning. You look… awake. Sort of."

Lisa nudged him with her elbow, suppressing a laugh. "Sort of? That's the nicest thing you've said all week."

Kiara laughed softly, feeling lighter. Even in the chaos of campus life, these small moments grounded her.

The café had reopened for the day, but Shane had insisted she take a walk with him before facing the crowds. They strolled quietly, their hands brushing occasionally—brief, electric touches that made Kiara's pulse race.

"You know," Shane began, tone careful but curious, "there's something about you… something familiar."

Kiara frowned slightly. "Familiar?"

"Yes," he said, running a hand through his hair. "I just… I feel like I've seen you before, somewhere long ago."

Kiara's heart skipped. Could he mean—? She shook her head lightly. "I don't think so. I've been in the city most of my life, but…" Her words trailed.

Shane's gaze held hers, intense and searching. "No, it's more than that. I know you. I think… we knew each other as kids."

Kiara froze. The words hovered between them like a secret. "You… what?"

"I'm serious," Shane said softly, stopping to face her. "There was this summer camp, years ago. You were there. I remember… a girl with a stubborn streak, always drawing in the corner while everyone else played. You had these sketches you didn't want anyone to see."

Kiara blinked, the memories rushing back like a tide she hadn't expected. "Shane… you mean… Benson?"

Shane smiled faintly, the tension breaking just slightly. "The same one. I didn't know it was you until… now."

Her breath caught. "I can't believe this. All this time… we were—"

"Connected," he finished, his voice soft, warm. "Maybe that's why everything feels… easy with us. Why I've never been able to ignore you."

The moment was interrupted by the distant hum of campus life. Students moved between buildings, chatter spilling into the afternoon air. A minor conflict flared nearby: a small argument between two classmates over seating arrangements at the library. It was insignificant, fleeting—but it reminded Kiara and Shane that the world didn't pause for them, no matter how intensely they felt.

Shane let out a small laugh, tugging Kiara gently toward a quiet bench under a maple tree. "I think we can forgive the world for a minute," he said, eyes twinkling.

Kiara smiled, her fingers brushing against his as they sat. The warmth between them grew, gentle but insistent. "A minute," she agreed.

From a distance, Lucas and Lisa's playful teasing reached them, drifting across the quad. Lucas muttered something under his breath, earning a small slap from Lisa. Shane glanced at them briefly, a subtle smile tugging at his lips, before returning his attention to Kiara.

"You were always stubborn," he teased lightly. "I can see it now, even after all these years."

Kiara laughed, rolling her eyes. "And you were always… annoyingly persistent."

He leaned closer, a whisper against her ear. "Some things never change."

The world seemed to shrink around them, the campus fading into background noise. For a moment, there was no gossip, no rumors, no minor conflicts—just the two of them, tied together by past and present.

A sudden gust of wind carried papers from a nearby table, and Kiara instinctively reached to catch them. Shane helped, their hands brushing, lingering for just a heartbeat longer than necessary.

"See?" he murmured, "even the wind conspires to bring us closer."

Kiara blushed but didn't pull away. "I think it's just trying to ruin my perfect moment."

He chuckled softly. "Perfect enough," he said, eyes warm, fingers still lightly touching hers.

In that quiet intimacy, the weight of rumors, attention, and campus life melted slightly. Their shared history—from childhood to this very moment—made the connection undeniable. They didn't need drama, conflict, or applause. They had each other, and that was enough.

By late afternoon, the sun cast long shadows across the quad. Kiara leaned against Shane, their hands intertwined, fingers fitting naturally together.

"I never imagined…" she whispered. "That we'd come this far, meet like this again."

Shane brushed a thumb across the back of her hand. "Neither did I. But I'm glad we did. And we'll keep going… together."

She smiled, resting her head lightly on his shoulder. "Together," she echoed.

And as the campus hummed around them, small conflicts buzzing in the distance, and life continuing its usual rhythm, Kiara realized that this—this quiet, intimate, and unwavering connection—was what truly mattered.

No rumors. No minor disturbances. Just the moment between them, alive, electric, and impossible to ignore.
