The moment the eye opened beneath the Academy battlefield, everything above it stopped mattering.
Not destroyed.
Not erased.
Just… downgraded into irrelevance.
A pressure rose from below that didn't push against the body it pushed against meaning itself.
Lin Z felt his knees buckle.
Scrappy didn't.
But his glow flickered for the first time since his evolution.
Inside Lin Z's mind, Scrappy spoke quietly.
"…That's not a beast."
Lin Z swallowed. "Then what is it?"
A pause.
"A consequence."
The massive eye beneath the arena rotated slowly.
Not looking.
Selecting.
The floating arena of surviving students cracked further under the pressure.
Kael's serpent-dragon roared but the sound came out distorted, like the concept of "roar" was being rewritten mid-existence.
Lyra's ice beast froze mid-motion, unable to decide what temperature it was supposed to be.
Even the SYSTEM CORE JUDGE above them stuttered.
SYSTEM NOTICE:
PRIORITY ENTITY DETECTED BELOW ACADEMY CORE
CLASSIFICATION: FORBIDDEN LAYER 0
Lin Z blinked.
"…Layer zero sounds like the bad one."
Scrappy nodded once.
"That is where things go that even reality refuses to define."
The Judge raised its hands again.
But slower now.
Less certain.
"THIS ENTITY SHOULD NOT BE ACTIVE."
The voice wasn't commanding anymore.
It was checking documentation that no longer matched reality.
The eye below opened wider.
And spoke.
Not loudly.
Not softly.
Just inevitably.
"You built above me again."
Silence.
Then
"How many times will you forget?"
The arena fractured.
Not physically.
Conceptually.
Gravity reversed in some places.
Time lagged in others.
Some students simply vanished not dead, not teleported just removed from the idea of "being present in this scenario."
Kael's expression finally broke.
"…This isn't an ascension trial," he said. "This is containment failure…"
Lin Z turned to him. "Containment of what?!"
Kael didn't answer.
Because he didn't know.
Scrappy suddenly stepped forward.
His tiny claws pressed against the air.
And the space listened.
For a brief moment, the pressure from below hesitated.
The eye narrowed.
"…Fragment resonance detected."
Scrappy's body stiffened.
Lin Z felt it immediately.
Fear.
Not for himself.
For what was under them.
Scrappy whispered:
"It recognizes me."
Lin Z frowned. "That's not good, right?"
Scrappy hesitated.
Then
"It remembers what I was before I broke."
The ground exploded upward.
But not debris.
Not rock.
A wall.
A boundary layer between worlds cracked open, revealing what lay beneath the Academy.
It was not a monster.
Not a dragon.
Not even a living being in any normal sense.
It was a colossal structure made of interlocking chains of light and void, forming a prison so vast it had no visible end.
And inside it
Something moved.
Slowly.
Awakening because Scrappy was nearby.
SYSTEM NOTICE:
WARNING: LAYER 0 CONTAINMENT BREACH
ENTITY NAME REDACTED
REASON: NAME NO LONGER EXISTS IN DATABASE
Lyra whispered, horrified.
"…They erased its identity."
Kael stepped back. "No… they erased its definition."
Lin Z looked down at the chains.
"…So that thing down there doesn't even have a name?"
Scrappy answered softly.
"It used to."
A pause.
"Before the Council removed it from reality's memory."
The chains began breaking.
One by one.
Not snapping.
Unwriting.
As if they had never been allowed to exist in the first place.
The Judge above screamed for the first time.
"LAYER 0 MUST REMAIN SEALED!"
It slammed its hands downward.
A command descended.
Reality reinforcement.
Absolute suppression.
But the chains didn't respond.
Because they no longer recognized authority.
The eye below shifted upward.
And focused directly on Scrappy.
"Little fragment…"
Scrappy froze.
Lin Z stepped in front of him immediately.
"Don't talk to him like that."
The eye paused.
Then
It laughed.
Not mockingly.
Sadly.
"You protect what broke me."
The entire Academy shook violently.
Floating islands began collapsing into the void beneath.
The Judge attempted emergency shutdown.
SYSTEM OVERRIDE: FAILED
SYSTEM OVERRIDE: FAILED
SYSTEM OVERRIDE: NOT RECOGNIZED
Kael looked at Lin Z.
"…What did you awaken?"
Lin Z stared at Scrappy.
"I think… something worse than us."
Scrappy stepped forward again.
His voice trembled.
"…I didn't mean to wake you."
The eye softened slightly.
If something like that could soften.
"You did not."
A pause.
"You simply existed near the lock."
The chains finally shattered completely.
And something began rising.
Not escaping.
Not attacking.
Returning.
The void split open.
And a colossal silhouette emerged.
Not fully formed.
Not fully visible.
A dragon-shaped absence wrapped in broken laws of reality.
Where it moved, history rewrote itself slightly.
Kael's serpent-dragon instantly collapsed to the ground, unconscious from pressure alone.
Lyra's beast shattered into crystal dust and reformed incorrectly.
Even the Judge froze mid-sentence.
Lin Z stepped back.
"…Okay," he whispered. "That's definitely a god."
Scrappy shook his head.
"Worse."
Lin Z frowned. "Worse than god?"
Scrappy answered quietly.
"A correction mechanism."
The entity finally rose above the broken chains.
And its voice echoed across everything.
Not loud.
Not soft.
Final.
"I was created to fix what Sovereigns broke."
A pause.
"And you…"
It focused on Scrappy.
"…are what remains of the first failure."
Silence.
Then
"So I will complete the correction."
The entire Academy collapsed inward.
Not destruction.
Convergence.
Everything was being pulled toward one point.
The entity.
Lin Z felt Scrappy tremble beside him.
Not fear.
Recognition.
Pain.
Memory fragments trying to surface.
Scrappy whispered:
"…I remember this place."
Lin Z looked at him. "You do?"
Scrappy nodded slowly.
"…This is where I was first unmade."
The correction entity raised one limb.
And reality began folding.
Kael screamed, "WE NEED TO ESCAPE"
But there was nowhere to escape to.
Lyra shouted something but her voice became distant, like it was being pulled into another layer of existence.
The Judge finally spoke:
"…Containment failure is irreversible."
Then it looked at Lin Z.
"…You were not supposed to reach this layer."
Lin Z clenched his fists.
"…Yeah? Well I wasn't supposed to be anything I am right now."
He looked at Scrappy.
"You still with me?"
Scrappy hesitated.
Then nodded.
"…Always."
The correction entity descended.
The final pressure hit.
And Lin Z's vision went white.
But before everything vanished
He heard Scrappy's voice one last time.
Not afraid.
Not broken.
Certain.
"Then let's break what broke me first."
