Chapter 87 - Chapter 88: The Breaking Point

Chapter 88: The Breaking Point

The sound that ripped from the Den Den Mushi speakers on Water 7 wasn't a roar of defiance, but a raw, gut-wrenching scream of denial. "BROTHER KAIDO!!" It was Jack, his voice cracking with a agony that was too real, too personal, to be anything but the truth. The last flicker of hope—that this was some elaborate Marine trick—was extinguished. The image was undeniable: the massive, headless body of the Beast, and the cold, detached figure of the Black Crow standing over it.

Across the world, the reaction was a uniform, stunned silence, followed by a seismic shift in understanding. Kaido's final, growled order—"Don't… take revenge."—hung in the air, heavier than any dying curse. It wasn't nobility; it was the ultimate admission of defeat. The strongest creature feared his own people would be slaughtered if they tried. The despair in that statement was a chill that seeped into the bones of every powerful being watching.

On the execution platform, the deed was done. Levi's Reiatsu blade had fallen with a silent, final grace. There had been no grand clash, no last-second miracle. Just an end. As the head rolled, Levi's other hand, hidden from view, made a subtle grasping motion. Invisible to all, the swirling, violent fragments of Kaido's colossal soul were drawn into a compressed sphere of spiritual pressure and vanished, stored within Levi's own reiatsu for later study. The physical blood was left as a grim testament.

The plaza of Marineford then erupted. Not in chaos, but in a unified, thunderous roar of triumph from the Marines. It was cathartic, world-shaking. "BLACK CROW! HERO! JUSTICE!" The titles were screamed with religious fervor. Levi was no longer just an Admiral; he was their avenging god, the living proof that no pirate was beyond their reach.

Sengoku watched, his face a mask of complicated emotions. He had abdicated the decision, and Levi had acted with brutal, public finality. The orders from the Five Elders were now ashes. The political fallout would be severe, but looking at the galvanized Marines below, he wondered if this raw, uncompromising victory wasn't a more potent weapon than any strategic balance.

Among the Warlords, reactions varied like shattered glass. Doflamingo stood frozen, his trademark grin a ghastly, rigid thing. The bedrock of his underworld influence—Kaido's fearsome reputation—had just crumbled to dust. The World Government's implied protection felt like tissue paper against the reality of Levi's will. Power… true power makes its own rules, he realized with icy clarity.

Mihawk's sharp eyes watched Levi, not the corpse. He had seen countless styles, but this… this was efficiency elevated to an art form. There was no wasted motion, no emotional expenditure. It was terrifying in its purity. Moriah felt no joy, only a hollow, echoing dread. If Kaido could be ended so… casually, what did that make his own decades of haunted existence?

But the battle was not over. One legend had fallen, but another was determined not to go quietly.

"BOY!"

Whitebeard's voice, though strained with pain, cut through the Marine cheers like a tidal wave. All eyes snapped to him. He stood, a mountain of scars and resolve, Murakumogiri held high. "Your plan won't succeed so easily!" he roared, and smashed his fist into the air.

CRACK-BOOM!

A shockwave of pure destructive force tore across the plaza toward the execution platform. It wasn't meant to kill Levi—Whitebeard knew better. It was a signal. A declaration that fear would not rule this day. He had to shatter the hypnotic awe Levi had cast over the battlefield, or his sons would lose the will to fight.

The quake blast surged forward, scattering Marines. Levi merely glanced at it. A wall of black, shimmering Reiatsu materialized ten meters in front of the platform. The devastating shockwave hit it and dissolved, absorbed without a sound, like a wave vanishing into a black hole.

But Whitebeard had achieved his goal. The spell was broken. Seeing their father defy the monster who slew Kaido, the fire re-ignited in the eyes of the Whitebeard Pirates. Despair was pushed back by a desperate, fighting pride.

"THAT'S DAD!"

"DON'T STOP! SAVE ACE!"

The battle recommenced with renewed, frantic intensity. Whitebeard, ignoring the fatal wound in his gut, became a force of pure momentum, carving a path toward the platform, with Akainu—bloody and furious—clawing his way back to intercept him. The two titans clashed again, their struggle more brutal and final than before.

Levi watched, calculating. He had taken his trophy. Now, the other piece of the old era needed to be removed. He would not allow Whitebeard to be taken by Akainu's magma or anyone else's ambition. That kill, that symbolic end, was his to deliver.

Just as he prepared to descend, a new commotion erupted at the harbor.

The massive Gates of Justice, which should have been sealed, began to swing open on their own.

A single, familiar, impossibly brash voice shouted over the din of war.

"ACEEEE!! I'M COMING TO SAVE YOU!"

Emerging from the channel was a battered Marine battleship, flying a Jolly Roger it had no right to fly. On its bow stood Monkey D. Luffy, his face set in determined fury. Flanking him was a nightmare retinue for the Marines: Silvers Rayleigh, his eyes shadowed with a geas only Levi could see; Jinbe, the former Warlord; Crocodile, sneering; Emporio Ivankov, blowing a kiss; and the ragged but defiant forms of the escaped Supernova captains.

The Impel Down breakout crew had arrived.

A collective gasp went through the Marine ranks. Sengoku's head whipped toward the harbor, then back to Levi, his expression asking the silent, furious question.

Levi offered a slight, almost apologetic shrug. "Ah. My apologies, Fleet Admiral Sengoku. I neglected to mention earlier—there were some escapees from Impel Down. The ones on that ship… were rather slippery. I was in a hurry to return here."

His tone was so casual it was insulting. He had left a storm of legendary prisoners loose in the world and mentioned it as an afterthought.

Sengoku's jaw tightened, but there was no time for recrimination. The battlefield had just become exponentially more complicated. The war for Ace's life now had a chaotic, unpredictable second front crashing into its rear.

Levi's smile didn't reach his eyes. Everything was proceeding. Whitebeard was spent. The Emperors were broken. The old guard was assembled for one final, glorious last stand. And now, the wild card of the new generation had been delivered right to the stage.

He looked from the raging Whitebeard, to the arriving Luffy, to the pale, hopeful face of Portgas D. Ace on the platform.

The final act could begin.
