Chapter 44 - To the underground exchange

The moment the car stopped, Thomas rushed out. He had arrived early and had been waiting anxiously, pacing back and forth since morning.

"Boss, I've been waiting forever," he said, unable to hide his excitement. "What are we selling today?"

Mary gestured calmly toward the back of the car. "Find people to help unload. People who can work and know how to keep their mouths shut. You understand what I mean."

Thomas immediately straightened. "Boss, don't worry. I won't mess this up."

He turned and jogged off to call for help, his bulky figure moving far quicker than expected. Just from a glance at the sacks, he could tell it was grain. Grain was tightly rationed this year. Wherever it came from, it was something that couldn't afford loose talk. In his mind, he already had a few reliable candidates.
