Keifer's POV
We were all waiting.
No one said it, but we were waiting.
Waiting for the door to open.
Waiting to see what expression Jay would have when she came back.
Waiting to see if Luke would be smiling.
The door finally opened.
Jay walked in first.
Luke followed behind her, hands in his pockets like he had just taken a peaceful stroll.
"What did you guys talk about?" I asked immediately.
Jay didn't look at me. "Nothing."
Nothing.
That word again.
She walked past us and went upstairs.
I watched her disappear.
Then I turned to Luke.
"Stay away from Jay."
Luke tilted his head slightly. "Don't tell me. Tell her."
He shrugged casually. "She's just captured by face and smile."
My jaw tightened. "You wish."
Luke placed a hand dramatically on his chest. "Do you know people praise me for my smile? It's very lindo."
Cute.
He said cute in Spanish.
Yuri rolled his eyes.
"What a joke," I muttered.
"Okay," Luke nodded. "If you say so."
He looked around the room like he was bored of the tension.
Then he casually walked into the kitchen.
Opened the fruit basket.
Picked up an apple.
He examined it like it was a scientific specimen.
"An apple a day keeps the doctor away, right?" he said thoughtfully.
He took a bite.
Crunch.
Then he looked at me with that irritating calm smile.
"So maybe if you eat more apples… I might leave your life."
He chewed slowly.
"Till then," he continued, "Si vis pacem, para bellum."
Yuri blinked. "What?"
Luke swallowed. "If you want peace… prepare for war."
He smiled again.
I stared at him.
"Nonsense."
He raised the apple slightly like a toast. "History disagrees."
I didn't respond.
Because the more he talked, the more it felt like he was saying something without saying it.
I turned and went upstairs.
I didn't have the patience for his games.
As I walked down the hallway, I noticed Jay's door was slightly open.
I stepped inside.
She was standing near the table, trying to pour water into a glass with one hand.
Her injured arm trembled slightly.
Before she could spill it—
I walked over and gently took the glass from her.
"I can do it," she said softly.
"I know," I replied.
I poured the water.
Carefully.
Handed it to her.
"Drink."
She looked at me for a second.
Then took it. "Thanks."
Silence filled the room.
Heavy.
Uncomfortable.
"What were you guys talking about?" I asked.
"Keifer…"
"Mmm."
That was all I said.
But what I meant was—
Don't lie to me.
Don't hide things from me.
Not when everything already feels like it's breaking.
She looked at me like she wanted to say something.
But she didn't.
And somehow…
That hurt more.
