"Is it over?" Dorian asked, still standing protectively near where Delia held Aiden.
"Not over. But the immediate threat is passing." Vael let the curtain fall back into place. "The Ancestor is pursuing them to the border. Ensuring they actually leave the territory."
I looked down at Lyra, then at my mother holding Kieran, at Delia with Aiden. Three tiny lives that had been in this world for less than an hour, and already something had tried to take them.
"Why do they want the babies?" I asked quietly. "What's so special about the little ones that demons would break centuries of isolation to come here for them?"
"I don't know," Vael admitted. "But clearly, these children matter. To something. To some force or prophecy or balance that we don't yet know of."
