I turned my head toward the window.
There was a man standing on the opposite side of the road.
He wasn't doing anything. He wasn't looking at the car. He was standing near the entrance of a small shop, arms loose at his sides, watching the street with the calm of someone who had nowhere to be and no particular feeling about that.
He was pale. Not unwell pale. Just pale, the way certain people were pale, in a way that suggested they didn't spend much time in sunlight. His hair was red, longish, pushed back from his face with the carelessness of someone who had made that gesture enough times that it had become habitual.
He was looking at the street.
And then, just before the car moved forward again, he wasn't.
He was looking at me.
Just for a second. The length of a blink.
