Chapter Twenty-Three: A Friend's Stand(Bonus Chapter)
The voices from the girls' dormitory grew louder, sharp and mocking, cutting through the common room's scholarly hush. Curious Ravenclaws looked up from their books, their expressions a mix of annoyance and morbid interest.
Luna?
Elian's spectral form, hovering near the bookshelves, felt a cold jolt. Shoes? He'd meant to buy her a proper pair, but his recent obsession with astral projection had pushed it from his mind. Knowing Luna, she'd never ask. He'd seen her over the last few days, still wearing his oversized school shoes, now cleaned to a soft shine. The sight was both funny and heartwarming—a small, silent testament to their friendship.
It was also, clearly, a target. Some students saw her mismatched footwear not as a sign of kindness, but as another reason to mock 'Loony Lovegood.' Their pranks were usually met with Luna's serene indifference, a quiet acceptance that only seemed to encourage them.
But this was different. These weren't just her shoes. They were a gift. A tangible piece of the first real care she'd felt at Hogwarts outside her family. That indifference had finally found its limit.
"Give me back my shoes!"
Luna's voice, usually drifting and ethereal, was now a blade of clear, cold steel.
Elian drifted closer, passing through the wall into the dormitory corridor. The scene made his spiritual form flicker with anger. Luna stood barefoot on the stone floor, her skin pale as moonlight, facing three older Ravenclaw girls. One hand was clenched at her side, the other pointed her wand with a steadiness he'd never seen in her. Her usual dreamy expression was gone, replaced by a frosty, breathtaking fury.
"Calm down, Lovegood!" one girl sneered, though she took a step back. "You can't prove anything!"
"My father works at the Ministry!" another blustered, trying to sound important. "Yours just writes about made-up creatures!"
"It's the common room! Magic is forbidden!" the third shrieked, her voice shrill with panic masked as authority.
The growing audience of Ravenclaws watched, intrigued but unmoved. No prefect was in sight. To them, it was just 'Loony' causing another scene. The odds were three to one. They settled in to watch the predictable outcome.
Elian saw it all: the bullies' growing confidence as no one intervened, the cold, stubborn set of Luna's jaw. She was going to get hurt. She was going to lose, and they'd laugh.
The thought was a clarion call. Without another moment's hesitation, Elian's spirit turned and shot back through the walls, a silver streak of intent, racing towards the Gryffindor Tower and his physical body. He had to get back. Now.
Back in the Ravenclaw corridor, the tension snapped. Emboldened by the crowd's silence and Luna's stillness, one of the girls—the one with the Ministry father—let out a cruel laugh. "Those shoes probably came from a rubbish heap anyway. You look like a homeless—"
