Chapter 76 - Chapter 76.

September 23

It's all over. Those idiots from Umbrella have finally done it…

Despite all their promises, they destroyed my city. Soon the streets will be crawling with zombies. Maybe I'll become one of them myself. And if that happens, I'll kill everyone in this city!!!

September 24

According to plan, I managed to sow serious confusion within the police ranks. I made sure that no one could enter the city—or leave it… at least alive. I personally oversaw the sealing of every possible escape route.

A few survivors are still trying to flee through the lower levels, but I'll make damn sure none of them get out.

September 26

I've reconsidered my stance on the survivors in the lower levels. I've decided I'll finish them myself.

Less than an hour ago, I shot Ed in the back. I watched him writhe in agony on the floor, lying in a pool of his own blood. The expression on his face was simply wonderful. He died staring at me, his eyes wide open. It was an intoxicating sight.

I wonder if the mayor's daughter is still alive. I let her escape to prolong the pleasure of the hunt…

Yes, I will savor my new trophy. Frozen forever in a pose of my own choosing…

***

A deranged lunatic! And after reading this, I dare to call myself a monster? Unlike some people, I don't take pleasure in death. Unfortunately, for me it's merely a harsh necessity. Maybe I should kill him myself—make the world a cleaner place. No. That line of thought leads nowhere. I shouldn't take on the prerogatives of a god. There's already one of those around, and I more or less remember what he'll become—though what will become of him, I don't know.

Still, Irons needs to be dealt with, that much is certain. But not as a man. He doesn't interest me as a human being—I want him as a G-parasite. The question is how to catch the right moment without killing Claire, or better yet, cutting her off from our reckoning altogether.

My thoughts were interrupted by a soft moan.

A moment later, the girl lying on the rooftop—dressed in a white ball gown, her light hair had lost its straw-blond hue, taking on a grayish, ash-pale tone instead—faded, corpse-like. She sat up and cast a clouded gaze around, fixing the yellowred irises of her eyes upon me.

Defective after all?

"Who are you? State your name," I said calmly, making an effort not to show my disappointment. Maybe all wasn't lost yet?

"Me? Who am I?" she echoed. "Katherine Warren. Daughter of Michael Warren." She spoke after a long pause, as if recalling something long forgotten.

Hmm. She can talk—and she seems coherent. Still, too early to celebrate. Let's continue testing.

"Who is your father? What position does he hold?" I asked, phrasing the question in different ways—perhaps that would be more effective.

"He… he…" She frowned, as though struggling with her memory. "The mayor. He's the mayor… of Raccoon City."

"That's right. Good girl. Do you remember what happened to you?" I continued, already mapping out the course of the conversation.

"Yes. I was running. I was being hunted. The city… was infected. They were hunting me… not zombies. Brian! He killed me… Yes, Brian Irons killed me!" Her voice grew more confident with each sentence. The Four Eyes listened closely, making an effort to remain unobtrusive.

"Correct. You were killed, and to everyone else, you are dead. Then again, almost the entire city is dead now. I gave you a new life—one superior to a human's. I decided you were worthy of it."

Behind the girl's back, the Four Eyes was gesticulating furiously, signaling that I was being far too lofty and pompous. That's if I censor some of my partner's more expressive gestures. Meanwhile, the blonde—now more platinum than anything—listened intently, trying to make sense of the new information

"I'm glad… to be alive again."

"Excellent. Now tell me—what do you want?" I asked.

"I want?" She hesitated. "To drink! And to take revenge. I didn't want to die… and also—can I go with you…"

"Cain," I said, introducing myself, recognizing the difficulty the half-vampire—who was gradually growing more confident in her speech—was having.

"…can I go with you, Cain?" she finally asked.

Well then. That's only your decision—though I'd expected to guide you toward it a bit later, assuming it would be more difficult. Still, there's something about your sluggishness and openness that I find appealing. We'll test you in combat later, and everything will be just fine. If even my very first victim turned out to be a true monster, then this time the result should be something far less defective.

"Of course, May. And you can be less formal with me," I replied after a brief pause.

Now it was time to deal properly with the police chief. We'd fulfill the girl's wishes along the way—give her something to drink, and give her revenge.
