Chapter 37 - Chapter 37.

"I don't know—this bastard has been chasing me for two blocks! Nothing affects it at all, and the passages between the houses, and the houses themselves, only delay it for a short time. It's simply monstrously strong." As she explained this, Jill didn't forget to retreat into the alley along the route of the squad, and the fighters followed her.

"After them?" Foue Eyes asked, with a strange anticipation.

"Uh, I guess so. Grab hold, you cowgirl," I said—and the girl didn't keep me waiting. A jump across the street, and we were already on the other side, watching the shootout from above. Or rather, the shooting of the zombies that had poured into the alley toward the special forces as soon as they appeared there.

Well, yes—flimsy house doors won't hold even a crowd of ordinary zombies for long; they'll be blown apart. Not to mention bigger creatures.

I look back and see Nemesis quietly, almost unhurriedly, crossing the street through a neighboring alley, already coming out onto the squad's future route. Well, yes—doubling back would mean a long fight, and along the squad's route zombies are slowly gathering, drawn by the gunfire. The special forces, clearly not prepared to deal with zombies, are making far too much noise.

Going right—jumping out of the alley—won't work either, because if I'm seeing this correctly, there are many barricades left by survivors. The zombies? They'll crawl underneath, and who cares if it's too low for a living person; a couple of dislocations and fractures won't bother them. They'll keep moving—slower, yes, but still moving. And zombies can easily get around such barriers, but the special forces have no chance there. Climbing over would take too long—and where would they even go? Into the unknown? What if there's a horde of the dead behind the barricades?

They can't go into the buildings either—it's private property, and the buildings are fenced off from the street by their facades.

No, it's possible to break through or blow it up, but the first takes too long, and the second would definitely attract Nemesis's attention. The only option is to run left—and on that side, slowly but inevitably, the culprit of this deadly race emerges from the alley. Formerly a dead end. The monster seems to have taken that philosophically.

"Damn!" Jill, who was the first to run out, blurted out, even managing to sprint a short distance down the street, clearly intending to turn into the passage between the houses on the right—when Nemesis appeared on the left.

And then… he released a real tentacle from his arm, as thick as three human fingers, and began pulling one of his targets toward him. Well, yes—he seems to be exterminating everyone except Umbrella personnel, and he has a special fondness for S.T.A.R.S.

But despite the swearing, the government squad quite quickly freed Jill from this… tentacle—there's no other way to describe it. (Damn it, I want a device like that too. I don't even know why yet, but I want it!) The blonde girl who cut the disgusting thing off Jill's neck dragged her to the wall. Seriously—how did you manage to get yourself into such a bad situation?

The blonde was clearly left behind to cover their backs, while the others started shooting at the massive B.O.W. carcass, but the shots didn't bother it in the slightest. It didn't even bother protecting its head, although unlike the Tyrants, the bullets clearly entered the monster's flesh.

"So," I muttered, "you're telling me I should eat this? Ah… I can already feel this coming back to haunt me, but there's nothing I can do about it." I snorted. "Foue Eyes, take the top floor of this building, just in case. Cover me with fire—both from the monster and from our allies. It's not often we get the chance to use someone to eliminate, or at least temporarily disable, a creature like this. There won't be a second chance. But I'm not going to hold back. I've wanted to test my abilities for a long time."

I paused, then added coldly, "So if the government fighters react inappropriately(or rather, appropriately) to me, do me a favor and send them to a better world."

"Poseur," Yamata snorted. "Go on. I'd be interested in getting his DNA, so I'll grant your request." She headed for the door leading down from the roof.

I approached the wall and jumped down into the alley from which this B.O.W. had emerged, walking calmly toward him.

"What? What is an Umbrella agent doing here—and alone at that?"

"Are they mocking us, sending a monster and a mercenary after us?"

I heard the fighters' voices, along with the wheezing of the big black man who had just been dragged out of the tentacle's grip. Heh. Such guys always die first—it's a law of the genre!

I continued walking slowly toward Nemesis, who had begun to turn in my direction. I remember that he doesn't react to Umbrella representatives, so if he attacks—before I do—it will be further confirmation for Foue Eyes that the Wolfpack has been written off. Or that he somehow recognized that I'm not human—but my assistant doesn't need to know that. So it's better if he attacks first. It'll only reinforce my point.

The monster didn't keep me waiting. A tentacle shot out in my direction.

Hmm. And Foue Eyes had just taken her position at that moment. She took her time—and I was walking so slowly because of her. Well, that, and because it's more dramatic this way.

I lazily extended my arm, bending it at the elbow, and the tentacle wrapped around it. If he throws me, I'll survive—I have experience after meeting Lisa. But I still want to test my strength.

So, let's begin. Time to test and compare the performance characteristics of two B.O.W.s.
