Chapter 33 - The assault

Once in his apartment, Tadeus is surprised to see his sister watching television in the living room with the bodyguard — Good evening, sir — Charles says.

— Get out of here — Tadeus replies.

— I'm going on a trip to Japan — she says.

— No, Yennedith — Tadeus says with a serious look.

— Oh, but you can travel with our father's friends and sleep with wealthy men? — Yennedith remarks.

— What the fuck?

— You just spend all your time lying and making excuses not to tell me the truth. First, our parents died, then Dad was abusive, and now we're not in debt, right?

— For me, my whole world is you and Grandma. If you leave, there's no way I can be sure you're safe.

— What safety, Tadeus? What safety?! — Yennedith demands — When are you going to be honest with yourself? You have to accept that Edwin is also our family, and there's no way we can stop him from hurting us. Just like I can't stop you from lying to me — she says.

— The worst thing that could happen is that one or all of us end up dead. I know it, and it terrifies me. That's why I need you not to get as involved as I am.

— Okay — Yennedith says — But you have to tell me everything. I don't want to find things out from Elena.

Tadeus nods, and they spend most of the morning talking about what has happened these past few weeks. Tadeus speaks openly about his possible relationship with Alexander, and to his surprise, his sister encourages him to tell him the truth or come up with plans to leave the country, but a passport can take weeks and a visa even years to be issued.

Later that day, Yennedith thinks the trip to Japan is the perfect opportunity to get her passport without raising suspicion of a possible escape and offers to take her grandmother so she can get hers. Elena, who is accompanying them, questions the decision to have Daisy present, but Yennedith replies that she won't go on the trip unless her grandmother accompanies her.

Tadeus and Gustaph are walking through the mansion's hallways — So that trip of yours didn't result in anything? — Tadeus asks.

— I was able to make a business proposal, but they want to speak with the head of the organization to be sure and possibly close the deal — Gustaph replies — These kinds of deals are very delicate and require a certain level of trust from both sides.

— Of course, nobody wants to end up in jail — Tadeus says.

— That's the least of it. With money and influence, even the most blood stained can get away with it — Gustaph says.

At that moment, Elena approaches — Your father is available to speak with you as you requested, Tadeus.

— Thank you — he replies — See you — he says to Gustaph before going to his father.

As night falls, Alexander is in his office waiting for his guest when he hears the doorbell. He waits a moment for Dove to answer, but she doesn't appear to report anything — Who is it? — he asks, leaving his office. He sees the woman holding the door shut to prevent him from seeing who's on the other side — Dove?

— Sir, I have something to tell you — the woman says. At that moment, Tadeus steps in and enters the reception area.

— I need to speak with you — Tadeus says — It's urgent — he insists, seeing Alexander's confused expression.

— Sir...

— Surely what you have to tell me can wait, Dove — Alexander replies.

They walk through the residential complex until they reach the park area — I thought you were eager to talk to me — Alexander says, a little nervous — You left during the night and didn't answer your phone.

— I'm sorry, I was very busy — Tadeus says — Gustaph came back and I had to pick him up at the airport.

— And here I was thinking that maybe you were upset with me about the cameras. Of course it was about the senator — Alexander sighs with a forced smile. Trying to control his jealousy.

— He doesn't have anyone else — Tadeus says — But that's not what I came to tell you.

— Can we end this already? As if I can even say anything started, because you've done nothing but ignore me — Alexander says — I think I've been transparent about my feelings for you, and you...

— I want you to meet my family — Tadeus says, taking his hands — If you want a relationship with me, you have to know everything about me.

Alexander is taken aback. They both leave the residence in a taxi at Tadeus' insistence and head to the apartment. Shortly after they arrive, he receives several food deliveries — I'm not as good a cook as you, so I ordered food before coming over — he says with a smile. Alexander looks around until Tadeus calls him to the table — They shouldn't take long.

The man nods, and they both wait in silence until Yennedith and Daisy arrive at the apartment — How did it go? — Tadeus asks from the doorway, taking his grandmother's coat.

— There wasn't as long a line as I expected — Yennedith says and continues into the living room — You must be Alexander, right?

— Yes, nice to meet you — he replies. He stands to shake her hand, but she greets him with a hug.

— We've heard a lot about you — Daisy says, forcing a smile as best she can.

— Grandma, come here — Yennedith says. The woman lets go of the guide dog and takes her granddaughter's hand. Tadeus gives the dog food and water while Daisy shakes Alexander's hand — What smells so delicious?

— I bought barbecue ribs and honey-spicy wings — Tadeus says.

Alexander remained quite quiet as they sat down to eat, only responding when spoken to without making any further comments. Tadeus fee ls somewhat worried by Alexander's behavior and considers that perhaps this move has been too risky, but he needed time.

<><><>A few hours earlier, after Yennedith and Daisy had left to take care of their passports, Tadeus met with his father in the office.

— I need you to send your men to get those security videos — Tadeus demanded.

— Absolutely not — Edwin replies.

— Then this ends here — Tadeus said, drawing his weapon.

— What do you think you're going to do with that? You're terrible at aiming — Edwin said dismissively.

— I don't need to aim — Tadeus replied, pressing the gun to his temple — I'll pull the trigger, and you won't have a successor to carry on your disgusting legacy.

— Wait, calm down! — Edwin pleaded — Put the gun down. You could make a mistake.

— I made a mistake the moment I found out you kidnapped my sister — Tadeus said with tears flooding his eyes and his breath coming in short gasps. He wondered if he was truly prepared to end his own life.

— I will, I promise you, but put the gun down! — Edwin said.

— Call your men. Tell them they will follow my orders no matter what you say from now on.

— What is this? Enough of these games, Tadeus! — Edwin ordered. Tadeus fired a shot into the ceiling, confirming that the gun was indeed loaded. The men who were guarding the door to the room entered, but Tadeus lowered his weapon to avoid any misinterpretation of the situation — You already know my son — Edwin said. — He's your boss, just like I am. You're forbidden from disobeying him.

— Of course, sir — one of them said, and the other nodded in agreement.

Then, Tadeus gathered fifteen more men to carry out his plan. A couple of them were tasked with getting rid of the security guards at the compound so they could use their uniforms without arousing suspicion among the other residents. After that, these two fake security guards would let in two vans, from which the rest of the masked men would enter the houses, wreaking havoc and stealing valuables. All of this was a smokescreen to disable Alexander's house security system, making it appear to the police as a robbery. Tadeus' only task was to lure Alexander out of his house and distract him.
