Chapter 17 - Echoes from the past

It didn't take him and Alister long to come across another blood stained text. Except this one, he could actually read. There in small crazy letters was scrawled:

[A blinding light to save us from our silent minds]

Nacht looked at the mysterious text with a complicated expression. He didn't even begin to guess what that could mean.

Nacht looked at Alister

"Got any ideas?"

He shook his head then smirked

"Nope! But I think we should start looking for… or should I say hunting down the other players."

With that they began walking towards what Nacht thought was the center of the floor. Most likely that was where most of the sinners were located and even if it wasn't, they would be forced there eventually. They came across another group on the way there, but before they knew what hit them, Alister had already delivered a vital blow to one of them, severing the sinners spinal cord at the base of the neck.

Alister had always seemed like an exceptional enlightened but Nacht was starting to believe that he may be even more dangerous than he initially thought.

"Stop."

Nacht promptly stilled at Alister's warning, then looked down.

'What the hell.'

Below them the floor had disappeared into a black abyss with white platforms that led further down. The platforms were the only source of light that lit up the dark expanse.

"What are you waiting for? Let's go."

Alister jumped down to the platform before gesturing for him to follow. Nacht looked into the darkness below and shivered. He wondered what would happen if he were to miss a step and plummet over the edge. He would most likely die, but he also wondered if there was a bottom beyond the pitch black nothing. There had to be. He wouldn't just fall forever, would he?

'Whatever you do, don't fall.'

He took a few steps back, took a deep breath, then ran and jumped. He landed on the platform unceremoniously before seeing that Alister had already jumped down to the next platform.

"Slow down will you!"

Alister looked back and his smile widened.

"Would you hurry up!"

Nacht snarled.

'Bastard.'

In the end he built up the courage to go down to the next platform, then the next, and then the one after that. Eventually he landed on the same platform as Alister.

"Why'd you stop?"

Alister simply pointed down to the lower platforms. Nacht looked in that direction and found a group of two other sinners staring back at them. In the next moment Nacht whipped around as he heard a loud sound. Behind and above them was another group of two other sinners who were smirking.

'Shit.'

They were now surrounded between two teams of enlightened sinners. Their situation couldn't have been more dire.

Nacht mumbled underneath his breath.

"Could my luck get any worse?"

One of the sinners on the higher platforms raised their voice and called out to the other group of sinners that was on the lower platforms.

"Hey! How about we team up to take out that other team."

One of the two sinners on the other side smiled as their eyes darkened with sinister glee.

"Sure! But we will definitely kill you after."

The sinner scoffed.

"I'd like to see you try."

Nacht's face twisted slightly.

'I just had to open my mouth.'

The only thing that could have made their situation worse from an attack on both sides was a coordinated attack on both sides.

Both teams of sinners slowly advanced closer to their platform. Perhaps they were sizing up there prey or maybe they too were scared of falling off the platforms into the abyss below. Despite their current preicament, Alister still seemed to be in high spirits. The other two teams seemed excited to take them out but Alister seemed to be even more ecstatic.

Alister spoke in his usual demeaning tone.

"What's taking you so long? Don't tell me you're getting cold feet!"

The sinner on the higher platform snarled and launched down to meet them, his partner following suit. Nacht prepared to engage in battle despite knowing that he was horribly out matched.

In the next moment, he was hit with a horrible sense of vertigo causing him to lose his balance.

'A mind attack? No, it's different.'

He was being affected by an ability that attacked his senses. Even Alister seemed to sway a little before he firmly gripped his blade to respond to the attack. Nacht was thrown back along the platform, the sound of metal clashing rang in his ears causing him to feel even more dazed.

Behind him, two more sinners had already reached their platform. Scrambling to his feet under the intense vertigo, he barely managed to deflect another attack. He felt his body rattle behind the force of the blow as he gripped the death march even firmer.

'It's still not enough.'

Even after training with the sword, he was still severely outmatched—both in skill and strength. Granted, he hadn't been training long, but it was still a letdown.

In his daze he didn't realize that another attack was coming his way. Before he had time to dodge out of the way from the sinner in front of him and be impaled by the attack behind him, he felt a hand firmly grip his arm, then launched him to the other side of the platform. He was left skidding across the ground not knowing what was up or down until he reached the platform's edge.

Turning so he was on his stomach, he desperately clinged to the platform with what little situational awareness he had left. He was left dangling off the side of the platform. Thankfully, he had enough strength and awareness to pull himself up. Once he got back to his feet, he noticed that someone was gunning it right for him.

'Damn it!'

In the distance Alister was taking on three sinners at once. Despite being at a disadvantage, he still seemed to be winning the battle with the same sinister smile on his face. Nacht didn't have time to see exactly how Alister was keeping up with the three enlightened since he had his own circumstances to worry about. However, he did see one of the sinners get violently slammed into the solid platform.

Then, in a strange turn of events, the white light illuminating the platform suddenly went dark and drowned the platform in darkness.
