Yagami's expression snapped from dark annoyance… to stunned disbelief.

"My granddaughter may not be the most dazzling in the clan," the elder said proudly, "but she is gentle, accomplished, and truly beautiful."
Yagami sat frozen, caught between confusion and alarm.
Noticing the lack of reaction, the elder asked again:
"You still haven't answered me, Yagami — do you have someone you're seeing?"
"This…"
Yagami hesitated, planning to decline politely.
But the elder spoke again before he could finish.
"Oh, right! I haven't even told you her name. My granddaughter… is called Mikoto."
"WHAT!?"
Yagami bolted upright.
"Mikoto? Uchiha Mikoto??"
"Oh? You know her?" the elder asked, suddenly intrigued.
Know her?

Yagami muttered silently in his head.

If he truly ended up involved with Mikoto, he couldn't afford to slight the elder in the slightest.
"Mm…"
The elder looked even more pleased.
"Ah — one more thing," he added suddenly.
"Tomorrow, come to my home as a guest. I'll have Mikoto prepare a meal for you."
"This… is it really appropriate for me to visit the Uchiha clan right now?" Yagami asked, uneasy.
After all, he had embarrassed them only days ago.
"It's perfectly fine!"
The elder thumped his chest confidently.
"Come at noon. I'll greet you at the Uchiha gate myself. I'd like to see who dares say anything."
"…Then I'll accept your hospitality."
They reached the front door.
"Grand Elder!"
"Grand Elder!"
The waiting Uchiha guards straightened as the elder stepped out but all of them stared in confusion.
Because the elder and Yagami were both smiling, looking like old acquaintances sharing an inside joke.
"I'll go ahead. Remember — come tomorrow," the elder said warmly, waving to Yagami.
"Yes, Elder. Please take care on your way back," Yagami replied politely.
The Uchiha guards were completely lost.
What happened in there?
Why were they acting like lifelong friends?
After seeing the elder off, Yagami closed the door behind him.
He leaned his back against it, staring into empty space.
…Did my long, tragic streak of being permanently single just reach its conclusion?
