Chapter 61 - The Shape of What Comes After

The territory did not fracture all at once.

It shifted.

Aurelia felt it in the hours after the council's last declaration, not as resistance but as misalignment. Patrols still moved. Fires still burned. Orders were still spoken. But the rhythm beneath them—the quiet certainty that had once kept everything moving in the same direction—had slipped.

It reminded her of ice beginning to thaw. Not dramatic. Not visible at first. Just enough to make old paths unreliable.

She stood at the edge of the upper ridge, cloak pulled close against the morning wind, watching the wolves below scatter into smaller clusters. They spoke in low tones. Some glanced toward the council hall before turning away. Others looked up, briefly, as if sensing her attention, then continued on.

They were not waiting for permission anymore.

Mira joined her a moment later, boots crunching softly against frost-touched stone. She didn't speak right away. Neither did Aurelia.

"You feel it too," Mira said finally.
