Chapter 243 - [243] Descent into the Soul

Among the students, there was a rumor about Professor Snape.

It was said that becoming a Potions professor had not been his original intention; his goal had been to become a Defense Against the Dark Arts professor.

Perhaps Dumbledore felt that the Potions Master should focus on Potions class, so he did not approve Professor Snape's request to transfer.

Professor Snape had unique insights into potions, and he had some special requirements and intricacies regarding the handling of materials and the specific steps of brewing potions.

These special requirements and considerations were often very effective in increasing the success rate of brewing magic potions.

His desire to apply for the Defense Against the Dark Arts professorship was not an overstepping of his authority or an unreasonable act.

In Defense Against the Dark Arts, the Patronus Charm was a complex and sophisticated spell.

Professor Snape possessed unique insights and methods for mastering this advanced magic, unlike most wizards.

"Those spellbooks also tell you to recall happy memories and concentrate all your thoughts on a particularly pleasant moment..."

"This method is equivalent to the fishhook and bait used by Muggles when fishing; you use the hook and bait to try your luck..."

"This method works; at least it can catch fish and help the wizard cast the Patronus Charm, but it's not stable enough and it's very basic! You need to cast the Patronus Charm more consistently."

Regarding the method of casting the Patronus Charm, Professor Snape used a few simple sentences and a vivid analogy to explain the method that wizards would typically use when practicing the Patronus Charm.

This could be seen as a demonstration that he had equally excellent insights into Defense Against the Dark Arts and was absolutely capable of being the professor of Defense Against the Dark Arts.

Professor Snape returned to normal, his eyes bright and sharp, seemingly enjoying the explanation with a certain pleasure.

Perhaps teaching him about Defense Against the Dark Arts would bring him more pleasure?

"The method I'm about to tell you needs to be based on a variety of positive emotions; the more positive emotions you can use, the better..."

"These positive emotions can not only help you understand your soul, but also strengthen it and maintain its purity..."

"You must remember this!" Professor Snape's tone suddenly turned cold, his expression becoming serious and icy as he stared intently at Vizette.

"When you feel darkness and are about to be swallowed by evil thoughts, the Patronus Charm cast in this way can provide you with final protection!"

"The history of the Patronus Charm is unknown, but we can infer its initial motivation by looking at its effects. It is a magic that protects itself."

"If a guardian spirit cannot even protect itself, what other characteristics or functions does it have? When you are abandoned, the Patronus Charm is your last resort..."

At this point, Professor Snape frowned and crossed his arms, seemingly realizing he had talked too much.

"I've said enough. You can start casting the Patronus Charm now... You should know all about those things on paper."

Everything he just said was about the concept and understanding of the guardian deity incantation itself, without touching on other elements of the spell, such as the tone of voice and gestures.

In his view, Vizette may have already known about this magic.

And indeed, Vizette did not disappoint Professor Snape's trust.

Vizette said, "Recall memories that bring positive emotions, draw a circle with your wand to summon your guardian spirits from those emotions, and finally firmly say the spell 'Expecto Patronum'."

"There's a Boggart inside the box, but it will turn into a Dementor." Professor Snape casually patted the worn wooden box. "You'll need to help me get rid of the Dementors."

In some ways, Dementors and Boggarts were very similar.

If Boggarts craved fear, then Dementors craved happiness and all positive emotions.

That was why one of the uses of the Patronus Charm was to deal with Dementors.

Vizette was reminded of the house-elves, who craved mockery—another kind of emotion…

However, now was not the time for speculation; casting the Patronus Charm was what they should be doing right now.

Having constructed a soul labyrinth, it wasn't difficult for Vizette to use positive emotions.

The challenge lay in how to explore one's own soul through the Patronus Charm.

After figuring out the difficulties, Vizette raised his wand and drew circles in the air, his mind filled with various memories, extracting the positive emotions from them.

Snape opened the old wooden box expressionlessly. Then, withered, festering hands clung to the edge of the box and reached out first.

It was still autumn, but the air around them grew unusually frosty, with a white frost spreading out from the old wooden box.

The scattered orange glow of the setting sun through the window disappeared, and the surrounding light seemed to be absorbed by the withered palm, turning it into a dimness like a faded photograph.

The Dementor burst out of the dilapidated wooden box, emitting a low, rapid wheezing sound. The chill finally appeared, greedily extinguishing the remaining warmth around it.

It resembled a rotting corpse draped in a tattered cloak, nearly as tall as Hagrid, with exposed, decaying gray skin; it was extremely oppressive.

Snape remained expressionless, his hands behind his back, seemingly unafraid of the Dementors, putting on an air of complete indifference.

Nevertheless, Vizette did not hesitate and immediately chanted the spell: "Expecto Patronum!"

Following Professor Snape's teachings, he used positive emotions as a starting point to delve into a deeper part of himself...

Vizette felt a sense of weightlessness as he fell, as if spinning in circles, similar to the hand gestures used to cast the Patronus Charm...

As he spun around and around, he entered a state similar to flying, as if he had transformed into a fallen leaf, drifting back and forth in the air...

Before his eyes was only a vast expanse of silver light, which shielded him from the bizarre and colorful world around him.

Vizette could see that in this colorful world, scenes from the past constantly appeared, disappeared, and reassembled, in an endless cycle.

Positive emotions were protecting him at this moment, guiding him through obstacles and leading him toward his soul...

The diffused silver light gradually receded, as if transforming into a layer of light that adhered firmly to his body...

The bizarre and fantastical world vanished, and he heard a familiar yet strange rustling sound...

Vizette opened his eyes; the last rays of the setting sun shone through the open window, casting an orange hue on the patterned stone floor…

Outside the window stood an old tree taller than the second floor, its few remaining leaves swaying back and forth, rustling in the cold wind...

The paint on the wall began to peel, revealing the gray substrate underneath...

Two rows of iron bunk beds were arranged against the wall, each with a thin mattress and a quilt covered with a slightly yellowed cover...

This was his room at the orphanage…
