The streets of the City of Radiance were a nightmare of smoke, fire, and shattered hope. Buildings leaned at impossible angles, rubble littered every alley, and the screams of civilians mingled with the clash of steel and the hiss of shadow and light.
Hiroto stood at the center of a crumbling plaza, shadow swirling violently around him. Every movement was calculated, every strike designed to protect the people still trapped between the enforcers and the collapsing ruins.
"Too many," Goro muttered, swinging his blade through a group of elite enforcers. "We can't hold them all!"
"They'll die if we falter," Akari hissed, red cloak whipping, spear piercing through anyone daring to get too close to the civilians.
Yui's eyes widened as she spotted a family cornered behind a collapsed tower. The mother clutched her two children, shielding them as debris rained down from the unstable structure.
"Hiroto… we have to…." she began.
Before they could react, the tower collapsed completely. Dust and splinters flew, and the family was buried under tons of rubble. Civilians screamed.
Hiroto's shadow surged violently, forming black tendrils that shot into the debris, trying to lift the weight. But the rubble was too heavy, fused with the spiritual energy of the city the remnants of faith and devotion twisted into a cage.
"No!" Hiroto shouted, sweat and ash streaking his face. "Stay alive… please!"
Akari slammed her spear into the ground, sending a shockwave that knocked back the nearest enforcers, but even her strength could not save everyone.
Hiroto's shadow pulsed, whispering in anguish. …Chains… cannot break… so much suffering…
The family's cries echoed in his mind. He felt their fear, their hope, their fleeting belief in salvation. And then, the mother's hand slipped from under the rubble.
Hiroto's fist clenched. "No… not like this!"
A single tear ran down Yui's cheek. "Hiroto… we can't save them all…"
From above, the Herald appeared again, silver hair glinting faintly in the smoke-filled sky. Her voice cut through the chaos.
"Witness the cost of war, Shadow-bearer. Every action, every choice… carries weight. How far will you go to protect them?"
Hiroto's shadow flared, black blades spinning outward, scattering the enforcers. The ground quaked as if the city itself responded to his rage.
But when the smoke cleared, the tower lay broken, and the family… was gone.
Hiroto fell to his knees. The shadow hissed in sorrow, curling around him protectively, mourning the loss he could not prevent.
Akari knelt beside him. "Hiroto… they knew the risk. This… this is the cost of defiance."
Goro slammed his blade into the ground. "Cost? That's more than cost that's a nightmare."
Hiroto's eyes glowed faintly, shadow wrapping tighter around him. "I won't let it happen again," he whispered. "I will protect everyone, even if it destroys me…"
The High Preacher's voice echoed faintly from the shrine ruins. "Sacrifice is inevitable. Faith demands it."
Hiroto rose, shadow stretching taller, wings of darkness unfurling. "Not my faith. Not my rules. Not my people."
The city burned around them, but Hiroto's resolve burned brighter. The war of faith had begun, and he would not falter no matter the cost.
To be continued…
