Chapter 80 - War of Faith: Part 10

The City of Radiance shook with the sounds of battle. Screams, clashing steel, and the pulsing hum of divine energy filled every alley and rooftop. Smoke swallowed the streets, cutting visibility to a few meters at best.

Hiroto stood atop a crumbling building, shadow coiling around him like a living storm. His chest burned, but his resolve was unshakable. Around him, Akari spun her crimson spear with lethal precision, Goro slashing through enforcers, and Yui supporting civilians as they fled the chaos.

From the east gate, a massive force advanced. Hundreds of elite Divine Path enforcers, each glowing with holy energy, marched in unison. At their center, the High Preacher appeared atop a levitating platform, golden robes flaring in the wind.

"Shadow-bearer," he called, voice amplified across the city, "your resistance ends today. Submit or watch this city burn."

Hiroto's shadow surged violently. …No chains… no submission…

He leaped from the rooftop, shadow forming a protective cocoon around civilians below as Akari cleared the path. The ground shook under the steps of the advancing enforcers, and the air sizzled where shadow and divine energy collided.

Suddenly, from the broken shrine, a column of light shot skyward. The surviving banners of the Divine Path glowed, and every soldier seemed to gain a surge of power. The citizens screamed in awe and terror alike.

Hiroto gritted his teeth. "They're drawing power from belief itself!"

Goro slammed his blade into the ground, sending a shockwave that knocked back a dozen enforcers. "You didn't even tell me faith could hit that hard!"

Akari's eyes narrowed. "It's more than faith, it's manipulation. They're bending people's hope, fear, and devotion into weapons."

From the rooftops, the Herald in silver hair watched silently. Her voice, calm yet sharp, cut through the chaos.

"Shadow-bearer, the choice you make now will define the war. Not your shadow… not even the Divine Path… but the people themselves."

Hiroto clenched his fists. He could see the citizens below, frozen between terror and devotion, torn by the battle. Every life mattered. Every choice weighed on him.

The High Preacher's staff glowed intensely, and he raised it toward the sky. A massive beam of white light erupted, striking the streets and sending debris flying in all directions. Civilians screamed, scattering in panic.

Hiroto's shadow shot forward, wrapping around the beam, absorbing some of its energy, but the force still pushed him back.

Akari leapt, red cloak whipping behind her, striking multiple enforcers with a deadly spin. "Hiroto! You have to focus on the civilians! Protect them!"

Hiroto nodded, shadow morphing into blades, shields, and wings simultaneously, forming a barrier that protected fleeing civilians. But the effort drained him quickly, and the shadow's voice inside hissed: …Too much… too many… chains…

Above, the Herald's gaze pierced him. "Do you understand now? Faith is not mere words. It shapes lives. And to oppose it… you must become more than yourself."

Hiroto's eyes glowed faintly. …Then I will become more…

The first city-wide escalation had begun. The Divine Path pushed forward with relentless force, the citizens caught in the middle, and the Shadow-bearer's resolve tested like never before.

This was no longer a battle of power it was a battle of morality, responsibility, and choice.

Hiroto whispered, voice steady despite the chaos:

"I will not let faith chain people's hearts. I will not kneel. And I will make sure… that they remember what freedom is."

To be continued…
